18 De Heer zei tegen Mozes: 2 "Zeg tegen de Israëlieten: Ik ben jullie Heer God. 3 Jullie mogen niet doen wat de mensen doen in Egypte, het land waar jullie gewoond hebben. Jullie mogen niet doen wat de mensen doen in Kanaän, het land waar Ik jullie heen breng. Jullie mogen hun wetten en gewoonten niet overnemen. 4 Jullie moeten je aan míjn wetten houden en míjn leefregels volgen. Volgens díe regels moeten jullie leven. Ik ben jullie Heer God. 5 Ja, jullie moeten je houden aan míjn wetten en leefregels – wie zich daaraan houdt, zal daardoor leven. Ik ben de Heer.
6 Niemand mag naar bed gaan met iemand van zijn eigen familie. Ik ben de Heer.
7 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met je vader. Ook niet met je moeder. Want ze is je moeder. Daarom mag je niet met haar naar bed gaan.
8 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de vrouw van je vader.[a] Want ze is van je vader.
9 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met je zus (de dochter van je vader of de dochter van je moeder, geboren in het gezin of daarbuiten).
10 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met één van je kleindochters. Want dat is een schande voor jezelf.
11 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de dochter van de vrouw van je vader. Ze is je halfzus.
12 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de zus van je vader. Want ze is familie van je vader.
13 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de zus van je moeder. Want ze is familie van je moeder.
14 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de vrouw van je vaders broer. Want ze is je tante.
15 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de vrouw van je zoon. Want ze is van je zoon.
16 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de vrouw van je broer. Want ze is van je broer.
17 Je mag niet trouwen met een vrouw én haar dochter. Ook niet met haar kleindochter. Want ze zijn familie van elkaar. Het is een schande als je dat doet.
18 Je mag geen zus van je vrouw als bijvrouw[b] trouwen en met haar naar bed gaan, zolang de andere vrouw nog leeft. Want je zou haar daar heel erg mee kwetsen.
19 Je mag niet met je vrouw naar bed gaan als ze ongesteld is.
20 Je mag niet naar bed gaan met de vrouw van iemand anders, want dat maakt jullie allebei onrein.
21 Je mag nooit één van je kinderen offeren voor de aanbidding van de afgod Moloch. Want daarmee beledig je Mij. Ik ben de Heer.
22 Een man mag niet naar bed gaan met een man zoals je naar bed gaat met een vrouw. Dat is iets walgelijks.
23 Mannen en vrouwen mogen geen seks hebben met een dier, want dan worden ze onrein. Het is iets walgelijks.
24 Al deze dingen maken je onrein. Doe ze dus niet. Want met zulke dingen hebben de volken die Ik voor jullie zal wegjagen zich onrein gemaakt. 25 Het hele land is erdoor bedorven. Daarom zal Ik hen straffen, zodat het land zijn bewoners zal uitspugen. 26 Maar jullie moeten je houden aan mijn wetten en leefregels en geen één van die walgelijke dingen doen. Dat geldt voor de Israëlieten én voor de vreemdelingen die bij jullie wonen. 27 Want de mensen die vóór jullie in dat land woonden, deden al die walgelijke dingen. Het land is erdoor bedorven. 28 Doe daarom niet dezelfde dingen, want dan zal het land ook jullie uitspugen. Net zoals het land het volk heeft uitgespuugd dat daar vóór jullie woonde.
29 Iedereen die één van die walgelijke dingen doet, moet worden gedood. 30 Dan zullen jullie je houden aan de wetten en leefregels die Ik jullie heb gegeven. Dan zullen jullie niet dezelfde walgelijke dingen doen als de volken die vóór jullie in het land woonden. Zo zullen jullie jezelf niet onrein maken. Ik ben jullie Heer God."

- Leviticus 18:8 In die tijd hadden mannen vaak meer dan één vrouw. De 'vrouw van je vader' was dus niet persé je moeder.
- Leviticus 18:18 Voor een bijvrouw was geen bruidsprijs betaald. Vaak was ze een slavin.

18 1,2 De Here gaf Mozes toen opdracht het volgende aan het volk Israël door te geven: 3 ‘Ik ben de Here, uw God, handel daarom niet als het volk van Egypte, waar u zo lang hebt gewoond of als het volk van Kanaän, waarheen Ik u ga brengen. 4,5 Gehoorzaam alleen mijn wetten en voer deze nauwgezet uit, want Ik ben de Here, uw God. Als u ze gehoorzaamt, zult u leven. Ik ben de Here.
6 Niemand van u mag geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met een bloedverwant, want Ik ben de Here. 7 Een zoon mag met zijn moeder geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben, want daardoor wordt zijn vader onteerd, 8 noch met een van zijn vaders andere vrouwen, 9 ook niet met zijn zuster of halfzuster, ongeacht of zij een dochter van de vader of de moeder is en in hetzelfde huis of elders is geboren. 10 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met uw kleindochter, want zij is een naaste bloedverwant. 11 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met een halfzuster, 12 ook niet met uw vaders zuster, want zij is een naaste bloedverwant van uw vader; 13 ook niet met uw tante van moederszijde, want zij is een naaste bloedverwant van uw moeder; 14 ook niet met uw tante, de vrouw van uw vaders broer. 15 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met uw schoondochter, 16 evenmin met de vrouw van uw broer, want daardoor wordt uw broer onteerd. 17 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met een moeder én haar dochter of kleindochter, want zij zijn naaste bloedverwanten. Incest is een schanddaad. 18 U mag niet de zuster van uw vrouw als tweede vrouw nemen. Het zou onverdraaglijk voor haar zijn als u geslachtsgemeenschap met haar zuster zou hebben. 19 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met een vrouw die ongesteld is. 20 En met de vrouw van uw naaste mag u geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben, anders zult u zichzelf verontreinigen.
21 U zult geen van uw kinderen aan Moloch geven door ze op zijn altaar te verbranden. Ontwijd de naam van uw God niet, want Ik ben de Here.
22 U mag geen geslachtsgemeenschap hebben met een man zoals u dat met een vrouw heeft, het is een gruwel in de ogen van de Here. 23 Een man mag geen seksuele gemeenschap hebben met een vrouwelijk dier, want daarmee verontreinigt hij zich. Een vrouw mag geen gemeenschap hebben met een mannelijk dier, dat is een schandelijke perversiteit. 24 Verontreinig u niet op een van deze manieren, zoals de heidense volken gewend zijn. Want omdat zij dit doen, zal Ik hen verdrijven uit het land waarheen u op weg bent. 25 Dat hele land is verontreinigd door dergelijk gedrag. Daarom zal Ik de bewoners van dat land straffen en hen uit het land verjagen.
26 U moet al mijn wetten en voorschriften gehoorzamen en naleven en deze gruwelijke zonden nalaten. Deze wetten gelden zowel voor geboren Israëlieten als voor buitenlanders die bij u wonen. 27 Ja, het volk van het land waarheen Ik u breng, heeft doorlopend dergelijke wandaden bedreven, het land is er onrein door geworden. 28 Doe deze zonden niet, anders zal Ik u het land uitdrijven, net zoals Ik nu zal doen met de volken die daar wonen. 29 Hij die een van deze wandaden bedrijft, zal uit het volk worden verstoten.
30 Neem mijn wetten dus goed in acht en neem niet een van deze vreselijke gewoonten over. Verontreinig uzelf niet met de wandaden van hen die wonen in het land waarheen u op weg bent. Want Ik ben de Here, uw God.’

18 Adonai said to Moshe, 2 “Speak to the people of Isra’el; tell them, ‘I am Adonai your God. 3 You are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Egypt, where you used to live; and you are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Kena‘an, where I am bringing you; nor are you to live by their laws. 4 You are to obey my rulings and laws and live accordingly; I am Adonai your God. 5 You are to observe my laws and rulings; if a person does them, he will have life through them; I am Adonai.
(LY: vi) 6 “‘None of you is to approach anyone who is a close relative in order to have sexual relations; I am Adonai. 7 You are not to have sexual relations with your father, and you are not to have sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother — do not have sexual relations with her. 8 You are not to have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that is your father’s prerogative. 9 You are not to have sexual relations with your sister, the daughter of your father or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere. Do not have sexual relations with them. 10 You are not to have sexual relations with your son’s daughter or with your daughter’s daughter. Do not have sexual relations with them, because their sexual disgrace will be your own. 11 You are not to have sexual relations with your father’s wife’s daughter, born to your father, because she is your sister; do not have sexual relations with her. 12 You are not to have sexual relations with your father’s sister, because she is your father’s close relative. 13 You are not to have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s close relative. 14 You are not to disgrace your father’s brother by having sexual relations with his wife, because she is your aunt. 15 You are not to have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; because she is your son’s wife. Do not have sexual relations with her. 16 You are not to have sexual relations with your brother’s wife, because this is your brother’s prerogative.
17 “‘You are not to have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter, nor are you to have sexual relations with her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter; they are close relatives of hers, and it would be shameful. 18 You are not to take a woman to be a rival with her sister and have sexual relations with her while her sister is still alive. 19 You are not to approach a woman in order to have sexual relations with her when she is unclean from her time of niddah. 20 You are not to go to bed with your neighbor’s wife and thus become unclean with her.
21 “‘You are not to let any of your children be sacrificed to Molekh, thereby profaning the name of your God; I am Adonai.
(RY: iv, LY: vii) 22 “‘You are not to go to bed with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.
23 “‘You are not to have sexual relations with any kind of animal and thus become unclean with it; nor is any woman to present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; it is perversion.
24 “‘Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things, because all the nations which I am expelling ahead of you are defiled with them. 25 The land has become unclean, and this is why I am punishing it — the land itself will vomit out its inhabitants. 26 But you are to keep my laws and rulings and not engage in any of these disgusting practices, neither the citizen nor the foreigner living with you; (LY: Maftir) 27 for the people of the land have committed all these abominations, and the land is now defiled. 28 If you make the land unclean, it will vomit you out too, just as it is vomiting out the nation that was there before you. 29 For those who engage in any of these disgusting practices, whoever they may be, will be cut off from their people. 30 So keep my charge not to follow any of these abominable customs that others before you have followed and thus defile yourselves by doing them. I am Adonai your God.’”

18 And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
2 Speak unto the Bnei Yisroel, and say unto them, I am Hashem Eloheichem.
3 After what is done in Eretz Mitzrayim, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after what is done in Eretz Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their chukkot.
4 Ye shall do My mishpatim, and be shomer over My chukkot, to walk therein: I am Hashem Eloheichem.
5 Ye shall therefore be shomer over My chukkot, and My mishpatim; which if an ish do, he shall live by them: I am Hashem.
6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to legallot ervah (to uncover nakedness, i.e., incestuously dishonor); I am Hashem.
7 The nakedness of thy av, or the nakedness of thy em, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy em; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
8 The nakedness of the wife of thy av shalt thou not uncover; it is the nakedness of thy av.
9 The nakedness of thy achot (sister), the bat of thy av, or bat of thy em, whether she be moledet bais (born at home), or moledet chutz (born outside), even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.
10 The nakedness of the bat of thy ben, or the bat of thy bat, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover; for theirs is thine own nakedness.
11 The nakedness of the bat of the wife of thy av, begotten of thy av, she is thy achot (sister), thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of the achot of thy av; she is thy father’s near kinswoman [i.e., close relative].
13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of the achot (sister) of thy em: for she is thy mother’s near kinswoman.
14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of the achi avicha (the brother of thy father), thou shalt not approach to his wife; she is thine dodah.
15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy kallah (daughter-in-law); she is the wife of thy ben; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
16 Thou shalt not uncover the ervah (nakedness) of thy brother’s wife; it is thy brother’s nakedness.
17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of an isha and her bat, neither shalt thou take the bat of her ben, or the bat of her bat, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is zimmah (wickedness).
18 Neither shalt thou take your wife’s achot (sister), to be a rival wife, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her lifetime.
19 Also thou shalt not approach unto an isha to uncover her nakedness, as long as she has her tumah from her period of niddah.
20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor’s wife. You shall not give your shikhvat zera to make tamei with her.
21 And thou shalt not let any of thy zera pass through [the eish, i.e., be sacrificed and burned or cremated] to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the Shem Eloheicha; I am Hashem.
22 Thou shalt not lie with zachar, as with isha: it is to’evah (abomination, detestable)
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any behemah. You shall not give your shikhvat to make tamei with it; neither shall any isha present herself to a behemah to have relations with it: it is tevel (perversion).
24 Make not yourselves tamei in any of these things; for in all these the Goyim which I cast out before you became tamei;
25 And HaAretz became tamei; therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and HaAretz itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.
26 Ye shall therefore be shomer over My chukkot and My mishpatim, and shall not commit any of these to’evot; no, neither any of your ezrach, nor any ger that sojourneth among you;
27 (For all these to’evot have the anshei HaAretz done, which were before you, and HaAretz is tamei;)
28 That HaAretz vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the Goyim that were before you.
29 For whosoever shall commit any of these to’evot, even the nefashot that commit them shall be cut off (i.e., suffer the death penalty [see Daniel 9:26 regarding Moshiach’s death penalty] from among their people.
30 Therefore shall ye be shomer over My charge, that ye commit not any one of these chukkot hato’evot, which were committed before you, and that ye make not yourselves tamei therein: I am Hashem Eloheichem.
