The Burnt Offering

1 The Lord called to Moses^(A) and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.^(B) He said, ² “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord,^(C) bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.^(D)

³ “‘If the offering is a burnt offering^(E) from the herd,^(F) you are to offer a male without defect.^(G) You must present it at the entrance to the tent^(H) of meeting so that it will be acceptable^(I) to the Lord. ⁴ You are to lay your hand on the head^(J) of the burnt offering,^(K) and it will be accepted^(L) on your behalf to make atonement^(M) for you.

¹⁰ “‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep^(A) or the goats,^(B) you are to offer a male without defect. ¹¹ You are to slaughter it at the north side of the altar^(C) before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.^(D)

¹¹ For the life of a creature is in the blood,^(A) and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.^[a](B)

¹³ The blood of goats and bulls^(A) and the ashes of a heifer^(B) sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. ¹⁴ How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit^(C) offered himself^(D) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences^(E) from acts that lead to death,^[a](F) so that we may serve the living God!^(G)
