11 (A)Poi il Signore disse a Mosè e ad Aaronne: 2 «Parlate così ai figli d’Israele: “Questi sono gli animali che potrete mangiare fra tutte le bestie che sono sulla terra. 3 Mangerete ogni animale che ha l’unghia spartita, il piede forcuto, e che rumina. 4 Ma tra quelli che ruminano e tra quelli che hanno l’unghia spartita, non mangerete questi: il cammello, perché rumina, ma non ha l’unghia spartita; lo considererete impuro; 5 l’irace[a], perché rumina, ma non ha l’unghia spartita; lo considererete impuro; 6 la lepre, perché rumina, ma non ha l’unghia spartita; la considererete impura; 7 il porco, perché ha l’unghia spartita e il piede forcuto, ma non rumina; lo considererete impuro. 8 Non mangerete la loro carne e non toccherete i loro corpi morti; li considererete impuri.
9 Fra tutti gli animali acquatici voi potrete mangiare questi. Mangerete tutto ciò che ha pinne e squame nelle acque, tanto nei mari quanto nei fiumi. 10 Ma tutto ciò che non ha né pinne né squame, sia nei mari sia nei fiumi, fra tutto ciò che si muove nelle acque e tutto ciò che vive nelle acque, lo considererete abominevole. 11 Li considererete abominevoli; non mangerete la loro carne, e avrete in abominio i loro corpi morti. 12 Considererete abominevole tutto ciò che non ha né pinne né squame nelle acque.
13 Tra gli uccelli avrete in abominio questi, e non li mangerete, perché sono un abominio: l’aquila, l’ossìfraga e l’aquila di mare; 14 il nibbio e ogni specie di falco; 15 ogni specie di corvo; 16 lo struzzo, il barbagianni, il gabbiano e ogni specie di sparviero; 17 il gufo, lo smergo, l’ibis; 18 il cigno, il pellicano, l’avvoltoio; 19 la cicogna, ogni specie di airone, l’upupa e il pipistrello.
20 Avrete in abominio pure ogni insetto alato che cammina su quattro piedi. 21 Però, fra tutti gli insetti alati che camminano su quattro piedi, mangerete quelli che hanno zampe sopra i piedi adatte a saltare sulla terra. 22 Di questi potrete mangiare: ogni specie di cavallette, ogni specie di locuste, gli acridi e i grilli. 23 Ogni altro insetto alato che ha quattro piedi vi sarà in abominio. 24 Questi animali vi renderanno impuri; chiunque toccherà il loro corpo morto sarà impuro fino alla sera. 25 Chiunque porterà i loro corpi morti si laverà le vesti e sarà impuro fino alla sera.
26 Considererete impuro ogni animale che ha l’unghia spartita, ma non ha il piede forcuto e non rumina; chiunque lo toccherà sarà impuro.
27 Considererete impuri tutti i quadrupedi che camminano sulla pianta dei piedi; chiunque toccherà il loro corpo morto sarà impuro fino alla sera. 28 Chiunque porterà i loro corpi morti si laverà le vesti e sarà immondo fino alla sera. Questi animali li considererete impuri.
29 Tra i piccoli animali che strisciano sulla terra, considererete impuri questi: la talpa, il topo e ogni specie di lucertola, 30 il toporagno, la rana, la tartaruga, la lumaca, il camaleonte. 31 Questi, fra gli animali che strisciano, saranno impuri per voi; chiunque li toccherà quando sono morti sarà impuro fino alla sera. 32 Ogni oggetto sul quale cadrà qualcuno di essi quando è morto sarà immondo: sia che si tratti di oggetti di legno o stoffa o pelle o sacco o qualunque altro oggetto di cui si faccia uso; sarà messo nell’acqua e sarà impuro fino alla sera; poi sarà puro. 33 Se ne cade qualcuno in un vaso di terra, tutto quello che vi si troverà dentro sarà impuro, e spezzerete il vaso. 34 Ogni cibo che serve al nutrimento, sul quale sarà caduta di quell’acqua, sarà impuro; e ogni bevanda di cui si fa uso, qualunque sia il vaso che la contiene, sarà impura. 35 Ogni oggetto sul quale cadrà qualcosa del loro corpo morto sarà impuro; il forno o il fornello sarà spezzato; sono impuri e li considererete impuri. 36 Però una fonte o una cisterna, nella quale c’è dell’acqua, sarà pura; ma chi toccherà i loro corpi morti sarà impuro. 37 Se qualcosa dei loro corpi morti cade su qualche seme che deve essere seminato, questo sarà puro; 38 ma se è stata versata dell’acqua sul seme e vi cade sopra qualcosa dei loro corpi morti, lo considererai impuro. 39 Se muore un animale di quelli che vi servono per nutrimento, colui che ne toccherà il corpo morto sarà impuro fino alla sera. 40 Colui che mangerà di quel corpo morto si laverà le vesti e sarà impuro fino alla sera; allo stesso modo colui che porterà quel corpo morto si laverà le vesti e sarà impuro fino alla sera.
41 Ogni cosa che striscia sulla terra è abominevole; non se ne mangerà. 42 Di tutti gli animali che brulicano sulla terra non ne mangerete nessuno di quelli che strisciano sul ventre o camminano con quattro piedi o con molti piedi, perché sono abominevoli. 43 Non vi rendete abominevoli a causa di uno di questi animali che strisciano e non vi rendete impuri per causa loro e non lasciatevi contaminare da loro. 44 Poiché io sono il Signore, il vostro Dio; santificatevi dunque e siate santi, perché io sono santo. Non contaminate le vostre persone per mezzo di uno qualsiasi di questi animali che strisciano sulla terra. 45 Poiché io sono il Signore che vi ho fatti salire dal paese d’Egitto, per essere il vostro Dio. Siate dunque santi, perché io sono santo.
46 Questa è la legge riguardante i quadrupedi, gli uccelli, ogni essere vivente che si muove nelle acque e ogni essere che striscia sulla terra, 47 perché sappiate discernere ciò che è impuro da ciò che è puro, l’animale che si può mangiare da quello che non si deve mangiare”».

III. REGOLE RELATIVE AL PURO E ALL'IMPURO
Animali puri e impuri
A. Animali terrestri
11 Il Signore disse a Mosè e ad Aronne: 2 «Riferite agli Israeliti: Questi sono gli animali che potrete mangiare fra tutte le bestie che sono sulla terra. 3 Potrete mangiare d'ogni quadrupede che ha l'unghia bipartita, divisa da una fessura, e che rumina. 4 Ma fra i ruminanti e gli animali che hanno l'unghia divisa, non mangerete i seguenti: il cammello, perché rumina, ma non ha l'unghia divisa, lo considererete immondo; 5 l'ìrace, perché rumina, ma non ha l'unghia divisa, lo considererete immondo; 6 la lepre, perché rumina, ma non ha l'unghia divisa, la considererete immonda; 7 il porco, perché ha l'unghia bipartita da una fessura, ma non rumina, lo considererete immondo. 8 Non mangerete la loro carne e non toccherete i loro cadaveri; li considererete immondi.
B. Animali acquatici
9 Questi sono gli animali che potrete mangiare fra tutti quelli acquatici. Potrete mangiare quanti hanno pinne e squame, sia nei mari, sia nei fiumi. 10 Ma di tutti gli animali, che si muovono o vivono nelle acque, nei mari e nei fiumi, quanti non hanno né pinne né squame, li terrete in abominio. 11 Essi saranno per voi in abominio; non mangerete la loro carne e terrete in abominio i loro cadaveri. 12 Tutto ciò che non ha né pinne né squame nelle acque sarà per voi in abominio.
C. Uccelli
13 Fra i volatili terrete in abominio questi, che non dovrete mangiare, perché ripugnanti: l'aquila, l'ossìfraga e l'aquila di mare, 14 il nibbio e ogni specie di falco, 15 ogni specie di corvo, 16 lo struzzo, la civetta, il gabbiano e ogni specie di sparviere, 17 il gufo, l'alcione, l'ibis, 18 il cigno, il pellicano, la fòlaga, 19 la cicogna, ogni specie di airone, l'ùpupa e il pipistrello.
D. Insetti alati. Il contatto delle bestie impure
20 Sarà per voi in abominio anche ogni insetto alato, che cammina su quattro piedi. 21 Però fra tutti gli insetti alati che camminano su quattro piedi, potrete mangiare quelli che hanno due zampe sopra i piedi, per saltare sulla terra. 22 Perciò potrete mangiare i seguenti: ogni specie di cavalletta, ogni specie di locusta, ogni specie di acrìdi e ogni specie di grillo. 23 Ogni altro insetto alato che ha quattro piedi lo terrete in abominio! 24 Per i seguenti animali diventerete immondi: chiunque toccherà il loro cadavere sarà immondo fino alla sera 25 e chiunque trasporterà i loro cadaveri si dovrà lavare le vesti e sarà immondo fino alla sera. 26 Riterrete immondo ogni animale che ha l'unghia, ma non divisa da fessura, e non rumina: chiunque li toccherà sarà immondo. 27 Considererete immondi tutti i quadrupedi che camminano sulla pianta dei piedi; chiunque ne toccherà il cadavere sarà immondo fino alla sera. 28 E chiunque trasporterà i loro cadaveri si dovrà lavare le vesti e sarà immondo fino alla sera. Tali animali riterrete immondi.
F. Animali di terra
29 Fra gli animali che strisciano per terra riterrete immondi: la talpa, il topo e ogni specie di sauri, 30 il toporagno, la lucertola, il geco, il ramarro, il camaleonte.
Altre regole sui contatti impuri
31 Questi animali, fra quanti strisciano, saranno immondi per voi; chiunque li toccherà morti, sarà immondo fino alla sera. 32 Ogni oggetto sul quale cadrà morto qualcuno di essi, sarà immondo: si tratti di utensili di legno o di veste o pelle o sacco o qualunque altro oggetto di cui si faccia uso; si immergerà nell'acqua e sarà immondo fino alla sera; poi sarà mondo. 33 Se ne cade qualcuno in un vaso di terra, quanto vi si troverà dentro sarà immondo e spezzerete il vaso. 34 Ogni cibo che serve di nutrimento, sul quale cada quell'acqua, sarà immondo; ogni bevanda di cui si fa uso, qualunque sia il vaso che la contiene, sarà immonda. 35 Ogni oggetto sul quale cadrà qualche parte del loro cadavere, sarà immondo; il forno o il fornello sarà spezzato: sono immondi e li dovete ritenere tali. 36 Però, una fonte o una cisterna, cioè una raccolta di acqua, sarà monda; ma chi toccherà i loro cadaveri sarà immondo. 37 Se qualcosa dei loro cadaveri cade su qualche seme che deve essere seminato, questo sarà mondo; 38 ma se è stata versata acqua sul seme e vi cade qualche cosa dei loro cadaveri, lo riterrai immondo. 39 Se muore un animale, di cui vi potete cibare, colui che ne toccherà il cadavere sarà immondo fino alla sera. 40 Colui che mangerà di quel cadavere si laverà le vesti e sarà immondo fino alla sera; anche colui che trasporterà quel cadavere si laverà le vesti e sarà immondo fino alla sera.
Considerazioni dottrinali
41 Ogni essere che striscia sulla terra è un abominio; non se ne mangerà. 42 Di tutti gli animali che strisciano sulla terra non ne mangerete alcuno che cammini sul ventre o cammini con quattro piedi o con molti piedi, poiché sono un abominio. 43 Non rendete le vostre persone abominevoli con alcuno di questi animali che strisciano; non vi rendete immondi per causa loro, in modo da rimaner così contaminati. 44 Poiché io sono il Signore, il Dio vostro. Santificatevi dunque e siate santi, perché io sono santo; non contaminate le vostre persone con alcuno di questi animali che strisciano per terra. 45 Poiché io sono il Signore, che vi ho fatti uscire dal paese d'Egitto, per essere il vostro Dio; siate dunque santi, perché io sono santo.
Conclusione
46 Questa è la legge che riguarda i quadrupedi, gli uccelli, ogni essere vivente che si muove nelle acque e ogni essere che striscia per terra, 47 perché sappiate distinguere ciò che è immondo da ciò che è mondo, l'animale che si può mangiare da quello che non si deve mangiare».

3 Whatsoever parteth the [b]hoof, and is cloven footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat:
4 But of them that chew the cud, or divide the hoof only, of them ye shall not eat: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, and divideth not the hoof, he shall be unclean unto you.
5 Likewise the coney, because he cheweth the cud, and divideth not the hoof, he shall be unclean to you.
6 Also the hare, because he cheweth the cud, and divideth not the hoof, he shall be unclean to you.
7 And the swine, because he parteth the hoof, and is cloven footed, but cheweth not the cud, he shall be unclean to you.
8 Of their [c]flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch: for they shall be unclean to you.
9 ¶ These shall ye eat, of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, or in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 But all that have not fins nor scales in the seas, or in the rivers, of all that [d]moveth in the waters, and of all [e]living things that are in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you.
11 They, I say, shall be an abomination to you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, but shall abhor their carcass.
12 Whatsoever hath not fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be abomination unto you.
13 ¶ These shall ye have also in abomination among the fowls, they shall not be eaten, for they are an abomination, the eagle, and the [f]goshawk, and the osprey:
14 Also the vulture, and the kite after his kind,
15 Also the ravens after their kind:
16 The ostrich also, and the night-crow, and the [g]seamew, and the hawk after his kind.
17 The little owl also, and the cormorant, and the great owl:
18 Also the [h]redshank, and the pelican, and the swan:
19 The stork also, the heron after his kind, and the lapwing and the [bat]:
20 Also every fowl that creepeth and goeth upon all four, such shall be an abomination unto you.
21 Yet these shall ye eat: of every fowl that creepeth, and goeth upon all four which [i]have their feet and legs all of one to leap withal upon the earth.
22 Of them ye shall eat these, the grasshopper after his kind, and the [j]solean after his kind, the hargol after his kind, and the hagab after his kind.
23 But all other fowls that creep and have four feet, they shall be abomination unto you.
24 For by such ye shall be polluted: whosoever toucheth the carcass, shall be unclean unto the evening.
25 Whosoever also [k]beareth of their carcass, shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until even.
26 Every beast that hath claws divided, and is [l]not cloven footed, nor cheweth the cud, such shall be unclean unto you: everyone that toucheth them, shall be unclean.
27 And whatsoever goeth upon his paws among all manner beasts that goeth on all four, such shall be unclean unto you: who so doth touch their carcass, shall be unclean until the even.
28 And he that beareth their carcass, shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: for such shall be unclean unto you.
29 ¶ Also these shall be unclean to you among the things that creep and move upon the earth, the weasel, and the mouse, and the [m][n]frog, after his kind:
30 Also the rat, and the lizard, and the chameleon, and the stellio, and the mole.
31 These shall be unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.
32 Also whatsoever any of the dead carcasses of them doth fall upon, shall be unclean, whether it be vessel of wood, or raiment, or [o]skin, or sack: whatsoever vessel it be that is occupied, it shall be put in the water as unclean until the even, and so be purified.
33 But every earthen vessel, wherein any of them falleth, whatsoever is within it shall be unclean, and (B)ye shall break it.
34 All meat also that shall be eaten, if any such water come upon it, shall be unclean: and all drink that shall be drunk in all such vessels shall be unclean.
35 And everything that their carcass fall upon, shall be unclean: the furnace or the pot shall be broken: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.
36 Yet the fountains and wells where there is plenty of water shall be clean: but that which [p]toucheth their carcasses, shall be unclean.
37 And if there fall of the dead carcass upon any seed, which useth to be sown, it shall be unclean.
38 But if any [q]water be poured upon the seed, and there fall of the dead carcass thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.
39 If also any beast, whereof ye may eat, die, he that toucheth the carcass thereof, shall be unclean until the even.
40 And he that eateth of the carcass of it, shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcass of it, shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
41 Every creeping thing therefore that creepeth upon the earth, shall be an abomination, and not be eaten.
42 Whatsoever goeth upon the breast, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or that hath many feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, ye shall not eat of them, for they shall be abomination.
43 Ye shall not pollute yourselves with anything that creepeth, neither make yourselves unclean with them, neither defile yourselves thereby: ye shall not, I say, be defiled by them.
44 For I am the Lord your God: be sanctified therefore, and be [r]holy, for I am holy, and defile not yourselves with any creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
45 For I am the Lord that brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God, and that you should be holy, for I am holy.
46 This is the law of beasts, and of fowls, and of every living thing that moveth in the waters, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth:
47 That there may be a difference between the unclean and clean, and between the beast that may be eaten, and the beast that ought not to be eaten.

Clean and Unclean Food(A)
11 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:(B) 3 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.
4 “‘There are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them.(C) The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5 The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 7 And the pig,(D) though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.(E)
9 “‘Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to regard as unclean.(F) 11 And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean.(G) 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.(H)
13 “‘These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle,[a] the vulture, the black vulture, 14 the red kite, any kind(I) of black kite, 15 any kind of raven,(J) 16 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18 the white owl,(K) the desert owl, the osprey, 19 the stork,(L) any kind(M) of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.(N)
20 “‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you.(O) 21 There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust,(P) katydid, cricket or grasshopper. 23 But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.
24 “‘You will make yourselves unclean by these;(Q) whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.(R) 25 Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes,(S) and they will be unclean till evening.(T)
26 “‘Every animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. 27 Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 28 Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.(U) These animals are unclean for you.
29 “‘Of the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you:(V) the weasel, the rat,(W) any kind of great lizard, 30 the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. 31 Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. 32 When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth.(X) Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot.(Y) 34 Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. 35 Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. 36 A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. 37 If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. 38 But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
39 “‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies,(Z) anyone who touches its carcass(AA) will be unclean till evening. 40 Anyone who eats some of its carcass(AB) must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.(AC) Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
41 “‘Every creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. 42 You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. 43 Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures.(AD) Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. 44 I am the Lord your God;(AE) consecrate yourselves(AF) and be holy,(AG) because I am holy.(AH) Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground.(AI) 45 I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt(AJ) to be your God;(AK) therefore be holy, because I am holy.(AL)
46 “‘These are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. 47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.(AM)’”
