The Day of Atonement^(A)

16 The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the Lord.^(B)

⁹ “‘The priests are to perform my service^(A) in such a way that they do not become guilty^(B) and die^(C) for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.^(D)

³ Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests,^(A) who were ordained to serve as priests. ⁴ Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord^(B) when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai.^(C) They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar^(D) served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.^(E)

² But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did,^(A) and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests.
