⁹ His sons brought the blood to him,^(A) and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.^(B)

¹⁵ Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood,^(A) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar^(B) to purify the altar.^(C) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it.^(D)

⁶ He is to dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle^(A) some of it seven times before the Lord,^(B) in front of the curtain of the sanctuary.^{(C) 7} The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns^(D) of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the Lord in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar^(E) of burnt offering^(F) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

⁴ It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats^(A) to take away sins.^(B)

⁵ Therefore, when Christ came into the world,^(C) he said:

⁸ First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”^(G)—though they were offered in accordance with the law. ⁹ Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”^(H) He sets aside the first to establish the second. ¹⁰ And by that will, we have been made holy^(I) through the sacrifice of the body^(J) of Jesus Christ once for all.^(K)

¹¹ Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,^(L) which can never take away sins.^{(M) 12} But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,^(N) he sat down at the right hand of God,^{(O) 13} and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.^{(P) 14} For by one sacrifice he has made perfect^(Q) forever those who are being made holy.^(R)

¹⁵ The Holy Spirit also testifies^(S) to us about this. First he says:

¹⁷ Then he adds:

¹⁸ And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

A Call to Persevere in Faith

¹⁹ Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence^(V) to enter the Most Holy Place^(W) by the blood of Jesus,

²² In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,^(A) and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.^(B)

²³ It was necessary, then, for the copies^(C) of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

¹⁰ In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,^(A) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.^(B)

¹⁸ “Then he shall come out to the altar^(A) that is before the Lord and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull’s blood and some of the goat’s blood and put it on all the horns of the altar.^(B)

¹⁸ He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people.^(A) His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar.
