Firstfruits and Tithes

26 When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, take some of the firstfruits(A) of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name(B) and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God. Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wandering(C) Aramean,(D) and he went down into Egypt with a few people(E) and lived there and became a great nation,(F) powerful and numerous. But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer,(G) subjecting us to harsh labor.(H) Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice(I) and saw(J) our misery,(K) toil and oppression.(L) So the Lord brought us out of Egypt(M) with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(N) with great terror and with signs and wonders.(O) He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey;(P) 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, Lord, have given me.(Q)” Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites(R) and the foreigners residing among you shall rejoice(S) in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.

12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth(T) of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe,(U) you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands nor have I forgotten any of them.(V) 14 I have not eaten any of the sacred portion while I was in mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean,(W) nor have I offered any of it to the dead. This is a lasting ordinance(AL) for the generations to come.(AM) They will receive no inheritance(AN) among the Israelites.(AO) 24 Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord.(AP) That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you(AQ) as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.(AR) 27 Your offering will be reckoned(AS) to you as grain from the threshing floor(AT) or juice from the winepress.(AU) 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes(AV) you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest. 29 You must present as the Lord’s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.’

30 “Say to the Levites: ‘When you present the best part, it will be reckoned to you as the product of the threshing floor or the winepress.(AW) 31 You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere, for it is your wages for your work at the tent of meeting.(AX) 32 By presenting the best part(AY) of it you will not be guilty in this matter;(AZ) then you will not defile the holy offerings(BA) of the Israelites, and you will not die.’”

Whatever value the priest then sets, that is what it will be. 13 If the owner wishes to redeem(E) the animal, a fifth must be added to its value.(F)

16 “‘If anyone dedicates to the Lord part of their family land, its value is to be set according to the amount of seed required for it—fifty shekels of silver to a homer[a] of barley seed. 17 If they dedicate a field during the Year of Jubilee, the value that has been set remains. 18 But if they dedicate a field after the Jubilee,(H) the priest will determine the value according to the number of years that remain(I) until the next Year of Jubilee, and its set value will be reduced. 19 If the one who dedicates the field wishes to redeem it,(J) they must add a fifth to its value, and the field will again become theirs. 20 If, however, they do not redeem the field, or if they have sold it to someone else, it can never be redeemed. 21 When the field is released in the Jubilee,(K) it will become holy,(L) like a field devoted to the Lord;(M) it will become priestly property.

22 “‘If anyone dedicates to the Lord a field they have bought, which is not part of their family land, 23 the priest will determine its value up to the Year of Jubilee,(N) and the owner must pay its value on that day as something holy to the Lord. 24 In the Year of Jubilee the field will revert to the person from whom it was bought,(O) the one whose land it was. 25 Every value is to be set according to the sanctuary shekel,(P) twenty gerahs(Q) to the shekel.

26 “‘No one, however, may dedicate the firstborn of an animal, since the firstborn already belongs to the Lord;(R) whether an ox[b] or a sheep, it is the Lord’s. 27 If it is one of the unclean animals,(S) it may be bought back at its set value, adding a fifth of the value to it. If it is not redeemed, it is to be sold at its set value.

28 “‘But nothing that a person owns and devotes[c](T) to the Lord—whether a human being or an animal or family land—may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy(U) to the Lord.

29 “‘No person devoted to destruction[d] may be ransomed; they are to be put to death.(V)

30 “‘A tithe(W) of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy(X) to the Lord. 31 Whoever would redeem(Y) any of their tithe must add a fifth of the value(Z) to it. 32 Every tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod(AA)—will be holy to the Lord. 33 No one may pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution.(AB) If anyone does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed.(AC)’”
