⁴⁴ Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,^(A) I will not reject them or abhor^(B) them so as to destroy them completely,^(C) breaking my covenant^(D) with them. I am the Lord their God.

² God did not reject his people,^(A) whom he foreknew.^(B) Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel:

²³ But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant^(A) with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy^(B) them or banish them from his presence.^(C)

²⁹ But if from there you seek^(A) the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart^(B) and with all your soul.^{(C) 30} When you are in distress^(D) and all these things have happened to you, then in later days^(E) you will return^(F) to the Lord your God and obey him. ³¹ For the Lord your God is a merciful^(G) God; he will not abandon^(H) or destroy^(I) you or forget^(J) the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.

²⁶ and in this way^[a] all Israel will be saved.^(A) As it is written:

⁶⁰ Yet I will remember the covenant^(A) I made with you in the days of your youth,^(B) and I will establish an everlasting covenant^(C) with you.

²² Yet there will be some survivors^(A)—sons and daughters who will be brought out of it.^(B) They will come to you, and when you see their conduct^(C) and their actions, you will be consoled^(D) regarding the disaster I have brought on Jerusalem—every disaster I have brought on it. ²³ You will be consoled when you see their conduct and their actions, for you will know that I have done nothing in it without cause, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(E)”
