⁴³ For the land shall be deserted by them and enjoy^[a] its Sabbath years by lying desolate without them, while they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they dared to spurn my ordinances, and they abhorred my statutes.^(A)

⁷ For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot,^(A)

¹⁵ if you spurn my statutes and abhor my ordinances, so that you will not observe all my commandments and you break my covenant,

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—

⁷ Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children, for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?^{(C) 8} If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children.^{(D) 9} Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness.^{(E) 11} Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.^(F)

²³ Whoever hates me hates my Father also.^{(A) 24} If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.^(B)

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil.^(A)

⁸ In one month I disposed of the three shepherds, for I had become impatient with them, and they also detested me.^(A)

¹⁴ So the Lord kept watch over this calamity until he brought it upon us. Indeed, the Lord our God is right in all that he has done, for we have disobeyed his voice.^(A)

⁷ “Righteousness is on your side, O Lord, but open shame, as at this day, falls on us, the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, in all the lands to which you have driven them because of the treachery that they have committed against you.^{(A) 8} Open shame, O Lord, falls on us, our kings, our princes, and our ancestors because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, but we have rebelled against him^(B)
