³⁹ Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’^(A) sins they will waste away.^(B)

¹⁷ for food and water will be scarce.^(A) They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of^[a] their sin.^(B)

¹⁰ “Son of man, say to the Israelites, ‘This is what you are saying: “Our offenses and sins weigh us down, and we are wasting away^(A) because of^[a] them. How then can we live?^(B)”’

²³ You will keep your turbans^(A) on your heads and your sandals^(B) on your feet. You will not mourn^(C) or weep but will waste away^(D) because of^[a] your sins and groan among yourselves.^(E)

⁹ Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember^(A) me—how I have been grieved^(B) by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols.^(C) They will loathe themselves for the evil^(D) they have done and for all their detestable practices.^(E)

⁶⁵ Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place^(A) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes^(B) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.^(C)

⁸ as it is written:

⁹ And David says:

³⁵ And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel^(A) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,^(B) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.^{(C) 36} Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.^(D)
