⁸ This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly,^(A) Sabbath after Sabbath,^(B) on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant.

⁷ “Over the table of the Presence^(A) they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings;^(B) the bread that is continually there^(C) is to remain on it.

³² Some of the Kohathites, their fellow Levites, were in charge of preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table.^(A)

³ He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?^{(A) 4} He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.^{(B) 5} Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath^(C) and yet are innocent?

²⁹ They were in charge of the bread set out on the table,^(A) the special flour for the grain offerings,^(B) the thin loaves made without yeast, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size.^(C)
