⁹ “‘The priests are to perform my service^(A) in such a way that they do not become guilty^(B) and die^(C) for treating it with contempt. I am the Lord, who makes them holy.^(D)

⁴³ Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting^(A) or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place,^(B) so that they will not incur guilt and die.^(C)

“This is to be a lasting ordinance^(D) for Aaron and his descendants.

³² By presenting the best part^(A) of it you will not be guilty in this matter;^(B) then you will not defile the holy offerings^(C) of the Israelites, and you will not die.’”

²² From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.^(A)

¹⁶ by allowing them to eat^(A) the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt^(B) requiring payment.^(C) I am the Lord, who makes them holy.^(D)’”

² The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses^(A) into the Most Holy Place^(B) behind the curtain^(C) in front of the atonement cover^(D) on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear^(E) in the cloud^(F) over the atonement cover.

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu^(A) took their censers,^(B) put fire in them^(C) and added incense;^(D) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,^(E) contrary to his command.^{(F) 2} So fire came out^(G) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,^(H) and they died before the Lord.^(I)
