⁹ When the daughter of a priest profanes herself through prostitution, she profanes her father; she shall be burned to death.

²⁴ About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself; moreover, she is pregnant as a result of prostitution.” And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”^(A)

⁶ someone who is blameless, married only once,^[a] whose children are believers, not accused of debauchery and not rebellious.^(A)

⁴ He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way, ⁵ for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?

Woes to Unrepentant Cities

²⁰ Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done because they did not repent. ²¹ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.^{(A) 22} But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.^{(B) 23} And you, Capernaum,

“For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.^{(C) 24} But I tell you that on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.”^(D)

³ I will rebuke your offspring and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and I will put you out of my presence.^[a]

⁶ Cut down old men, young men and young women, little children and women, but touch no one who has the mark. And begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were in front of the house.^(A)

¹³ For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God,^[a] and he did not restrain them.^{(A) 14} Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.”^(B)

³⁴ The fate of your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day.^(A)
