¹⁵ “‘Do not pervert justice;^(A) do not show partiality^(B) to the poor or favoritism to the great,^(C) but judge your neighbor fairly.^(D)

¹⁶ “‘Do not go about spreading slander^(E) among your people.

“‘Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life.^(F) I am the Lord.

¹⁷ “‘Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart.^(G) Rebuke your neighbor frankly^(H) so you will not share in their guilt.

¹⁸ “‘Do not seek revenge^(I) or bear a grudge^(J) against anyone among your people,^(K) but love your neighbor^(L) as yourself.^(M) I am the Lord.

⁵² “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.^{(A) 53} Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?^{(B) 54} But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(C) that say it must happen in this way?”

¹⁹ Do not take revenge,^(A) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[a](B) says the Lord. ²⁰ On the contrary:

²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

⁴ Love is patient,^(A) love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.^{(B) 5} It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,^(C) it is not easily angered,^(D) it keeps no record of wrongs.^{(E) 6} Love does not delight in evil^(F) but rejoices with the truth.^{(G) 7} It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.^(H)

²⁶ “In your anger do not sin”^[a]:^(A) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, ²⁷ and do not give the devil a foothold.^{(B) 28} Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,^(C) doing something useful with their own hands,^(D) that they may have something to share with those in need.^(E)

²⁹ Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,^(F) but only what is helpful for building others up^(G) according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Listening and Doing

¹⁹ My dear brothers and sisters,^(A) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak^(B) and slow to become angry, ²⁰ because human anger^(C) does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

⁹ Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[a](A) is still in the darkness.^{(B) 10} Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[b] lives in the light,^(C) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^{(D) 11} But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(E) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(F) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(G)

¹⁴ We know that we have passed from death to life,^(A) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.^{(B) 15} Anyone who hates a brother or sister^(C) is a murderer,^(D) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.^(E)

¹⁶ This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.^(F) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.^(G)

¹⁸ There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,^(A) because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

¹⁹ We love because he first loved us.^{(B) 20} Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister^(C) is a liar.^(D) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,^(E) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.^{(F) 21} And he has given us this command:^(G) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.^(H)
