¹⁶ You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness.^(A)

Levirate Marriage

⁵ “When brothers reside together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her, taking her in marriage and performing the duty of a husband’s brother to her,^(A)

²¹ If a man takes his brother’s wife, it is impurity; he has uncovered his brother’s nakedness; they shall be childless.^(A)

¹⁹ “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, the man^[a] shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.^(A)

²⁴ “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies childless, his brother shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.’^(A)

¹⁹ But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done,^(A)

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod^[a] had married her.

³ For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,^{(A) 4} because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”^(B)
