¹² He is to take a censer full of burning coals^(A) from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense^(B) and take them behind the curtain.

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu^(A) took their censers,^(B) put fire in them^(C) and added incense;^(D) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,^(E) contrary to his command.^(F)

Incense

³⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices^(A)—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, ³⁵ and make a fragrant blend of incense,^(B) the work of a perfumer.^(C) It is to be salted and pure and sacred. ³⁶ Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet^(D) with you. It shall be most holy^(E) to you. ³⁷ Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy^(F) to the Lord. ³⁸ Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off^(G) from their people.”

³ Another angel,^(A) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,^(B) on the golden altar^(C) in front of the throne. ⁴ The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God^(D) from the angel’s hand.

⁴⁶ Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer^(A) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly^(B) to make atonement^(C) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;^(D) the plague^(E) has started.”

⁶ Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal^(A) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. ⁷ With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;^(B) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.^(C)”

¹⁸ So each of them took his censer,^(A) put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

¹¹ and the anointing oil^(A) and fragrant incense^(B) for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded^(C) you.”

¹⁴ How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit^(A) offered himself^(B) unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences^(C) from acts that lead to death,^[a](D) so that we may serve the living God!^(E)
