¹⁶ the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the ^(A)hawk of any kind,

² And he called out with a mighty voice,

⁵ For you are all ^(A)children^[a] of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. ⁶ So then ^(B)let us not sleep, as others do, but let us ^(C)keep awake and ^(D)be sober. ⁷ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, ^(E)are drunk at night.

¹⁸ For ^(A)many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you ^(B)even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. ^19 (C)Their end is destruction, ^(D)their god is their belly, and ^(E)they glory in their shame, with ^(F)minds set on earthly things.

⁷ Therefore ^(A)do not become partners with them; ⁸ for ^(B)at one time you were ^(C)darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. ^(D)Walk as children of light ⁹ (for ^(E)the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), ¹⁰ and ^(F)try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. ^11 (G)Take no part in the ^(H)unfruitful ^(I)works of darkness, but instead ^(J)expose them.

¹⁸ They ^(A)are darkened in their understanding, ^(B)alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to ^(C)their hardness of heart. ¹⁹ They ^(D)have become callous and ^(E)have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

^2 (A)in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following ^(B)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in ^(C)the sons of disobedience— ³ among whom we all once lived in ^(D)the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body^[a] and the mind, and ^(E)were by nature ^(F)children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.^[b]

^19 (A)And this is the judgment: ^(B)the light has come into the world, and ^(C)people loved the darkness rather than the light because ^(D)their works were evil. ^20 (E)For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, ^(F)lest his works should be exposed. ²¹ But whoever ^(G)does what is true ^(H)comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
