11 Habló Jehová a Moisés y a Aarón, diciéndoles: 2 Hablad a los hijos de Israel y decidles: Estos son los animales que comeréis de entre todos los animales que hay sobre la tierra. 3 De entre los animales, todo el que tiene pezuña hendida y que rumia, este comeréis. 4 Pero de los que rumian o que tienen pezuña, no comeréis estos: el camello, porque rumia pero no tiene pezuña hendida, lo tendréis por inmundo. 5 También el conejo, porque rumia, pero no tiene pezuña, lo tendréis por inmundo. 6 Asimismo la liebre, porque rumia, pero no tiene pezuña, la tendréis por inmunda. 7 También el cerdo, porque tiene pezuñas, y es de pezuñas hendidas, pero no rumia, lo tendréis por inmundo. 8 De la carne de ellos no comeréis, ni tocaréis su cuerpo muerto; los tendréis por inmundos.

9 Esto comeréis de todos los animales que viven en las aguas: todos los que tienen aletas y escamas en las aguas del mar, y en los ríos, estos comeréis. 10 Pero todos los que no tienen aletas ni escamas en el mar y en los ríos, así de todo lo que se mueve como de toda cosa viviente que está en las aguas, los tendréis en abominación. 11 Os serán, pues, abominación; de su carne no comeréis, y abominaréis sus cuerpos muertos. 12 Todo lo que no tuviere aletas y escamas en las aguas, lo tendréis en abominación.

13 Y de las aves, estas tendréis en abominación; no se comerán, serán abominación: el águila, el quebrantahuesos, el azor, 14 el gallinazo, el milano según su especie; 15 todo cuervo según su especie; 16 el avestruz, la lechuza, la gaviota, el gavilán según su especie; 17 el búho, el somormujo, el ibis, 18 el calamón, el pelícano, el buitre, 19 la cigüeña, la garza según su especie, la abubilla y el murciélago.

20 Todo insecto alado que anduviere sobre cuatro patas, tendréis en abominación. 21 Pero esto comeréis de todo insecto alado que anda sobre cuatro patas, que tuviere piernas además de sus patas para saltar con ellas sobre la tierra; 22 estos comeréis de ellos: la langosta según su especie, el langostín según su especie, el argol según su especie, y el hagab según su especie. 23 Todo insecto alado que tenga cuatro patas, tendréis en abominación.

24 Y por estas cosas seréis inmundos; cualquiera que tocare sus cuerpos muertos será inmundo hasta la noche, 25 y cualquiera que llevare algo de sus cadáveres lavará sus vestidos, y será inmundo hasta la noche. 26 Todo animal de pezuña, pero que no tiene pezuña hendida, ni rumia, tendréis por inmundo; y cualquiera que los tocare será inmundo. 27 Y de todos los animales que andan en cuatro patas, tendréis por inmundo a cualquiera que ande sobre sus garras; y todo el que tocare sus cadáveres será inmundo hasta la noche. 28 Y el que llevare sus cadáveres, lavará sus vestidos, y será inmundo hasta la noche; los tendréis por inmundos.

29 Y tendréis por inmundos a estos animales que se mueven sobre la tierra: la comadreja, el ratón, la rana según su especie, 30 el erizo, el cocodrilo, el lagarto, la lagartija y el camaleón. 31 Estos tendréis por inmundos de entre los animales que se mueven, y cualquiera que los tocare cuando estuvieren muertos será inmundo hasta la noche. 32 Y todo aquello sobre lo que cayere algo de ellos después de muertos, será inmundo; sea cosa de madera, vestido, piel, saco, sea cualquier instrumento con que se trabaja, será metido en agua, y quedará inmundo hasta la noche; entonces quedará limpio. 33 Toda vasija de barro dentro de la cual cayere alguno de ellos será inmunda, así como todo lo que estuviere en ella, y quebraréis la vasija. 34 Todo alimento que se come, sobre el cual cayere el agua de tales vasijas, será inmundo; y toda bebida que hubiere en esas vasijas será inmunda. 35 Todo aquello sobre lo que cayere parte del cadáver de ellos será inmundo; el horno u hornillos se derribarán; son inmundos, y por inmundos los tendréis. 36 Con todo, la fuente y la cisterna donde se recogen aguas serán limpias; mas lo que hubiere tocado en los cadáveres será inmundo. 37 Y si cayere algo de los cadáveres sobre alguna semilla que se haya de sembrar, será limpia. 38 Mas si se hubiere puesto agua en la semilla, y cayere algo de los cadáveres sobre ella, la tendréis por inmunda.

39 Y si algún animal que tuviereis para comer muriere, el que tocare su cadáver será inmundo hasta la noche. 40 Y el que comiere del cuerpo muerto, lavará sus vestidos y será inmundo hasta la noche; asimismo el que sacare el cuerpo muerto, lavará sus vestidos y será inmundo hasta la noche.

41 Y todo reptil que se arrastra sobre la tierra es abominación; no se comerá. 42 Todo lo que anda sobre el pecho, y todo lo que anda sobre cuatro o más patas, de todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra, no lo comeréis, porque es abominación. 43 No hagáis abominables vuestras personas con ningún animal que se arrastra, ni os contaminéis con ellos, ni seáis inmundos por ellos. 44 Porque yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios; vosotros por tanto os santificaréis, y seréis santos, porque yo soy santo;(A) así que no contaminéis vuestras personas con ningún animal que se arrastre sobre la tierra. 45 Porque yo soy Jehová, que os hago subir de la tierra de Egipto para ser vuestro Dios: seréis, pues, santos, porque yo soy santo.

Clean and Unclean Land Animals

11 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 2 ‘Tell the Israelites: You may eat(A) all these kinds of land animals.(B) 3 You may eat any animal with divided hooves and that chews the cud. 4 But among the ones that chew the cud or have divided hooves you are not to eat these:

camels,(C) though they chew the cud,

do not have divided hooves – they are unclean for you;

5 hyraxes,(D) though they chew the cud,

do not have hooves – they are unclean for you;

6 hares, though they chew the cud,

do not have hooves – they are unclean for you;

7 pigs, though they have divided hooves,

do not chew the cud – they are unclean for you.

8 Do not eat any of their meat or touch their carcasses – they are unclean for you.(E)

Clean and Unclean Aquatic Animals

9 ‘This is what you may eat from all that is in the water: you may eat everything in the water that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or streams. 10 But these are to be abhorrent to you: everything in the seas or streams that does not have fins and scales among all the swarming things and other living creatures(F) in the water. 11 They are to remain abhorrent to you; you must not eat any of their meat, and you must abhor their carcasses. 12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be abhorrent to you.

Unclean Birds

13 ‘You are to abhor these birds. They must not be eaten because they are abhorrent:

eagles,[a](G) bearded vultures,

Egyptian vultures,[b] 14 kites,[c]

any kind of falcon,[d](H)

15 every kind of raven, 16 ostriches,[e]

short-eared owls, gulls,[f]

any kind of hawk,(I)

17 little[g] owls, cormorants,[h]

long-eared owls,[i](J)

18 barn[j] owls, eagle owls,[k](K)

ospreys, 19 storks,[l]

any kind of heron,[m]

hoopoes, and bats.

Clean and Unclean Flying Insects

20 ‘All winged insects that walk on all fours are to be abhorrent to you. 21 But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground. 22 You may eat these:

any kind of locust,(L) cicada, cricket, and grasshopper.

23 All other winged insects that have four feet are to be abhorrent to you.

Purification after Touching Dead Animals

24 ‘These will make you unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean(M) until evening, 25 and whoever carries any of their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.(N) 26 All animals that have hooves but do not have a divided hoof and do not chew the cud are unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean. 27 All the four-footed animals(O) that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening, 28 and anyone who carries their carcasses is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. They are unclean for you.

29 ‘These creatures that swarm(P) on the ground are unclean for you:

weasels,[n] mice,(Q)

any kind of large lizard,[o]

30 geckos, monitor lizards,[p]

common lizards,[q] skinks,[r]

and chameleons.[s]

31 These are unclean for you among all the swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening. 32 When any one of them dies and falls on anything it becomes unclean – any item of wood, clothing, leather, sackcloth,(R) or any implement used for work. It is to be rinsed with water and will remain unclean until evening; then it will be clean. 33 If any of them falls into any clay pot, everything in it will become unclean; you are to break it. 34 Any edible food(S) coming into contact with that unclean water will become unclean, and any drinkable liquid in any container will become unclean. 35 Anything one of their carcasses falls on will become unclean. If it is an oven or stove, it is to be smashed; it is unclean and will remain unclean for you. 36 A spring or cistern containing water will remain clean, but someone who touches a carcass in it will become unclean. 37 If one of their carcasses falls on any seed that is to be sown, it is clean; 38 but if water has been put on the seed and one of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean for you.

39 ‘If one of the animals that you use for food dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean until evening. 40 Anyone who eats some of its carcass is to wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening. Anyone who carries its carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until evening.

Unclean Swarming Creatures

41 ‘All the creatures that swarm on the earth are abhorrent; they must not be eaten. 42 Do not eat any of the creatures that swarm on the earth, anything that moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet,[t] for they are abhorrent. 43 Do not become contaminated by any creature that swarms; do not become unclean or defiled by them. 44 For I am the Lord your God,(T) so you must consecrate yourselves(U) and be holy because I am holy.(V) Do not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God,(W) so you must be holy because I am holy.(X)

46 ‘This is the law concerning animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that swarm on the ground, 47 in order to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the animals(Y) that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.’

9 “‘These you can eat from all creatures that are in the water: Any creatures in the water that have both fins and scales,[l] whether in the seas or in the streams,[m] you may eat. 10 But any creatures that do not have both fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the streams, from all the swarming things of the water and from all the living creatures that are in the water, are detestable to you. 11 Since they are detestable to you, you must not eat their meat and their carcass you must detest. 12 Any creature in the water that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you.

Clean and Unclean Birds

13 “‘These you are to detest from among the birds—they must not be eaten, because they are detestable:[n] the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 14 the kite, the buzzard of any kind,[o] 15 every kind of crow,[p] 16 the eagle owl,[q] the short-eared owl, the long-eared owl, the hawk of any kind, 17 the little owl, the cormorant, the screech owl, 18 the white owl, the scops owl, the osprey, 19 the stork, the heron of any kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

Clean and Unclean Insects

20 “‘Every winged swarming thing that walks on all fours[r] is detestable to you. 21 However, this you may eat from all the winged swarming things that walk on all fours, which have jointed legs[s] to hop with on the land. 22 These you may eat from them:[t] the locust of any kind, the bald locust of any kind, the cricket of any kind, the grasshopper of any kind. 23 But any other winged swarming thing that has four legs is detestable to you.

Carcass Uncleanness

24 “‘By these[u] you defile yourselves—anyone who touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening, 25 and anyone who carries their carcass must wash his clothes and will be unclean until the evening.

Inedible Land Quadrupeds

26 “‘All[v] animals that divide the hoof, but it is not completely split in two,[w] and do not chew the cud[x] are unclean to you; anyone who touches them becomes unclean.[y] 27 All that walk on their paws among all the creatures that walk on all fours[z] are unclean to you. Anyone who touches their carcass will be unclean until the evening, 28 and the one who carries their carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

Creatures that Swarm on the Land

29 “‘Now this is what is unclean to you among the swarming things that swarm on the land:[aa] the rat, the mouse, the large lizard of any kind, 30 the Mediterranean gecko, the spotted lizard, the wall gecko, the skink, and the chameleon. 31 These are the ones that are unclean to you among all the swarming things. Anyone who touches these creatures[ab] when they die will be unclean until evening. 32 Also, anything they fall on[ac] when they die will become unclean—any wood vessel or garment or article of leather or sackcloth. Any such vessel with which work is done must be immersed in water[ad] and will be unclean until the evening. Then it will become clean. 33 As for any clay vessel they fall into,[ae] everything in it[af] will become unclean and you must break it. 34 Any food that may be eaten which becomes soaked with water[ag] will become unclean. Anything drinkable[ah] in any such vessel will become unclean.[ai] 35 Anything their carcass may fall on will become unclean. An oven or small stove must be smashed to pieces; they are unclean, and they will stay unclean[aj] to you. 36 However, a spring or a cistern which collects water[ak] will be clean, but one who touches the creature’s carcass will be unclean. 37 Now, if such a carcass falls on any sowing seed which is to be sown,[al] it is clean, 38 but if water is put on the seed and such a carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.

Edible Land Animals

39 “‘Now if an animal[am] that you may eat dies,[an] whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until the evening. 40 One who eats from its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening, and whoever carries its carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening. 41 Every swarming thing that swarms on the land is detestable; it must not be eaten. 42 You must not eat anything that crawls[ao] on its belly or anything that walks on all fours or on any number of legs[ap] of all the swarming things that swarm on the land, because they are detestable. 43 Do not make yourselves detestable by any of the swarming things.[aq] You must not defile yourselves by them and become unclean by them, 44 for I am the Lord your God and you are to sanctify yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any of the swarming things that creep on the ground, 45 for I am the Lord who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God,[ar] and you are to be holy because I am holy. 46 This is the law[as] of the land animals, the birds, all the living creatures that move in the water, and all the creatures[at] that swarm on the land, 47 to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between the living creatures that may be eaten and the living creatures that must not be eaten.’”

3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

5 And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

13 And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

14 And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

15 Every raven after his kind;

16 And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

17 And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

18 And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

19 And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

20 All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

21 Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;

22 Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.

23 But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

24 And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.

25 And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

26 The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

27 And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.

28 And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

29 These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,

30 And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

31 These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.

32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.

33 And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.

34 Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.

35 And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean and shall be unclean unto you.

36 Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.

37 And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

38 But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.

39 And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.

40 And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

41 And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

42 Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

43 Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

44 For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

45 For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46 This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:

47 To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.
