15 Let the peace of Christ(A) rule in your hearts, since as members of one body(B) you were called to peace.(C) And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ(D) dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom(E) through psalms,(F) hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.(G) 17 And whatever you do,(H) whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks(I) to God the Father through him.

Are we beginning to commend ourselves(A) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(B) to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(C) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(D) not on tablets of stone(E) but on tablets of human hearts.(F)

Such confidence(G) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(H) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(I) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(J)—not of the letter(K) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(L)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

Now if the ministry that brought death,(M) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(N) transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation(O) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(P) 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope,(Q) we are very bold.(R) 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(S) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull,(T) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(U) is read.(V) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(W) the veil is taken away.(X) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,(Y) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(Z) 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a](AA) the Lord’s glory,(AB) are being transformed into his image(AC) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit(A) of the Sovereign Lord(B) is on me,
because the Lord has anointed(C) me
to proclaim good news(D) to the poor.(E)
He has sent me to bind up(F) the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom(G) for the captives(H)
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor(I)
and the day of vengeance(J) of our God,
to comfort(K) all who mourn,(L)
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown(M) of beauty
    instead of ashes,(N)
the oil(O) of joy
    instead of mourning,(P)
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    a planting(Q) of the Lord
for the display of his splendor.(R)

They will rebuild the ancient ruins(S)
    and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations.
Strangers(T) will shepherd your flocks;
foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.
And you will be called priests(U) of the Lord,
you will be named ministers of our God.
You will feed on the wealth(V) of nations,
and in their riches you will boast.

Instead of your shame(W)
you will receive a double(X) portion,
and instead of disgrace
you will rejoice in your inheritance.
And so you will inherit(Y) a double portion in your land,
and everlasting joy(Z) will be yours.

“For I, the Lord, love justice;(AA)
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.
In my faithfulness I will reward my people
and make an everlasting covenant(AB) with them.
Their descendants(AC) will be known among the nations
and their offspring among the peoples.
All who see them will acknowledge
that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”(AD)

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
my soul rejoices(AE) in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,(AF)
as a bridegroom adorns his head(AG) like a priest,
and as a bride(AH) adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
and a garden(AI) causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness(AJ)
and praise spring up before all nations.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves(A) to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility(B) toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[a](C)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.(D) Cast all your anxiety on him(E) because he cares for you.(F)

Be alert and of sober mind.(G) Your enemy the devil prowls around(H) like a roaring lion(I) looking for someone to devour. Resist him,(J) standing firm in the faith,(K) because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.(L)

10 And the God of all grace, who called you(M) to his eternal glory(N) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,(O) will himself restore you and make you strong,(P) firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.(Q)

Final Greetings

12 With the help of Silas,[b](R) whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly,(S) encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.(T)

13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.(U) 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.(V)

Peace(W) to all of you who are in Christ.
