Judgment on Jerusalem

א Aleph

How the Lord has overshadowed
Daughter Zion with his anger!
He has thrown down Israel’s glory
from heaven to earth.
He did not acknowledge his footstool(A)
in the day of his anger.(B)

ב Beth

Without compassion(C) the Lord has swallowed up
all the dwellings of Jacob.
In his wrath he has demolished
the fortified cities(D) of Daughter Judah.
He brought them to the ground
and defiled the kingdom and its leaders.(E)

ג Gimel

He has cut off every horn(F) of Israel
in his burning anger
and withdrawn his right hand(G)
in the presence of the enemy.
He has blazed against Jacob like a flaming fire
that consumes everything.(H)

ד Daleth

He has strung his bow like an enemy;(I)
his right hand is positioned like an adversary.
He has killed everyone who was the delight to the eye,(J)
pouring out his wrath like fire
on the tent of Daughter Zion.

ה He

The Lord is like an enemy;
he has swallowed up Israel.
He swallowed up all its palaces
and destroyed its fortified cities.
He has multiplied mourning and lamentation
within Daughter Judah.(K)

ו Waw

He has wrecked his temple[a]
as if it were merely a shack in a field,[b]
destroying his place of meeting.(L)
The Lord has abolished
appointed festivals and Sabbaths in Zion.
He has despised king and priest
in his fierce anger.

ז Zayin

The Lord has rejected his altar,
repudiated his sanctuary;(M)
he has handed the walls of her palaces
over to the enemy.
They have raised a shout in the house of the Lord
as on the day of an appointed festival.

ח Cheth

The Lord determined to destroy
the wall of Daughter Zion.
He stretched out a measuring line(N)
and did not restrain himself from destroying.
He made the ramparts and walls grieve;
together they waste away.

ט Teth

Zion’s gates have fallen to the ground;(O)
he has destroyed and shattered the bars on her gates.
Her king and her leaders live among the nations,
instruction[c] is no more,
and even her prophets receive
no vision from the Lord.(P)

י Yod

10 The elders of Daughter Zion
sit on the ground in silence.
They have thrown dust on their heads(Q)
and put on sackcloth.
The young women of Jerusalem
have bowed their heads to the ground.(R)

כ Kaph

11 My eyes are worn out from weeping;(S)
I am churning within.
My heart is poured out in grief[d](T)
because of the destruction of my dear people,(U)
because infants and nursing babies faint
in the streets of the city.(V)

ל Lamed

12 They cry out to their mothers,
“Where is the grain and wine?” (W)
as they faint like the wounded
in the streets of the city,
as their life pours out
in the arms of their mothers.

מ Mem

13 What can I say on your behalf?
What can I compare you to, Daughter Jerusalem?
What can I liken you to,
so that I may console you, Virgin Daughter Zion?
For your ruin is as vast as the sea.
Who can heal you?(X)

נ Nun

14 Your prophets saw visions for you
that were empty and deceptive;[e](Y)
they did not reveal your iniquity
and so restore your fortunes.(Z)
They saw pronouncements for you
that were empty and misleading.

ס Samek

15 All who pass by
scornfully clap their hands(AA) at you.
They hiss(AB) and shake their heads(AC)
at Daughter Jerusalem:
Is this the city that was called
the perfection of beauty,(AD)
the joy of the whole earth?(AE)

פ Pe

16 All your enemies
open their mouths against you.(AF)
They hiss and gnash their teeth,(AG)
saying, “We have swallowed her up.(AH)
This is the day we have waited for!
We have lived to see it.”

ע Ayin

17 The Lord has done what he planned;
he has accomplished his decree,
which he ordained in days of old.
He has demolished without compassion,(AI)
letting the enemy gloat over you
and exalting the horn of your adversaries.

צ Tsade

18 The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.
Wall of Daughter Zion,(AJ)
let your tears run down like a river
day and night.(AK)
Give yourself no relief
and your[f] eyes no rest.

ק Qoph

19 Arise, cry out in the night
from the first watch of the night.
Pour out your heart like water
before the Lord’s presence.(AL)
Lift up your hands to him
for the lives of your children
who are fainting from hunger
at the head of every street.(AM)

ר Resh

20 Lord, look and consider
to whom you have done this.
Should women eat their own children,(AN)
the infants they have nurtured?[g]
Should priests and prophets
be killed in the Lord’s sanctuary?

שׁ Shin

21 Both young and old
are lying on the ground in the streets.
My young women and young men
have fallen by the sword.
You have killed them in the day of your anger,
slaughtering without compassion.(AO)

ת Taw

22 You summon those who terrorize me[h] on every side,(AP)
as if for an appointed festival day;
on the day of the Lord’s anger
no one escaped or survived.
My enemy has destroyed
those I nurtured[i] and reared.

Hope through God’s Mercy

א Aleph

I am the man who has seen affliction
under the rod of God’s wrath.
He has driven me away and forced me to walk
in darkness instead of light.(AQ)
Yes, he repeatedly turns his hand
against me all day long.

ב Beth

He has worn away my flesh and skin;(AR)
he has broken my bones.(AS)
He has laid siege against me,(AT)
encircling me with bitterness and hardship.(AU)
He has made me dwell in darkness
like those who have been dead for ages.(AV)

ג Gimel

He has walled me in so I cannot get out;(AW)
he has weighed me down with chains.
Even when I cry out and plead for help,
he blocks out my prayer.(AX)
He has walled in my ways with blocks of stone;(AY)
he has made my paths crooked.(AZ)

ד Daleth

10 He is[j] a bear waiting in ambush,
a lion in hiding.(BA)
11 He forced me off my way and tore me to pieces;
he left me desolate.
12 He strung his bow(BB)
and set me as the target for his arrow.

ה He

13 He pierced my kidneys
with shafts from his quiver.(BC)
14 I am a laughingstock(BD) to all my people,[k]
mocked by their songs(BE) all day long.
15 He filled me with bitterness,
satiated me with wormwood.(BF)

ו Waw

16 He ground my teeth with gravel(BG)
and made me cower[l] in the dust.
17 I have been deprived[m] of peace;(BH)
I have forgotten what prosperity is.
18 Then I thought, “My future[n] is lost,
as well as my hope from the Lord.”

ז Zayin

19 Remember[o] my affliction and my homelessness,(BI)
the wormwood and the poison.(BJ)
20 I continually remember them
and have become depressed.[p](BK)
21 Yet I call this to mind,
and therefore I have hope:(BL)

ח Cheth

22 Because of the Lord’s faithful love(BM)
we do not perish,[q]
for his mercies never end.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness!(BN)
24 I say, “The Lord is my portion,(BO)
therefore I will put my hope in him.”

ט Teth

25 The Lord is good to those who wait(BP) for him,
to the person who seeks him.
26 It is good to wait quietly(BQ)
for salvation from the Lord.(BR)
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke(BS)
while he is still young.

י Yod

28 Let him sit alone and be silent,(BT)
for God has disciplined[r] him.
29 Let him put his mouth in the dust(BU)
perhaps there is still hope.
30 Let him offer his cheek
to the one who would strike him;(BV)
let him be filled with disgrace.

כ Kaph

31 For the Lord
will not reject us forever.
32 Even if he causes suffering,
he will show compassion
according to the abundance of his faithful love.(BW)
33 For he does not enjoy bringing affliction(BX)
or suffering on mankind.

ל Lamed

34 Crushing all the prisoners of the land[s]
beneath one’s feet,
35 denying justice to a man(BY)
in the presence of the Most High,
36 or subverting a person in his lawsuit(BZ)
the Lord does not approve of these things.

מ Mem

37 Who is there who speaks and it happens,
unless the Lord has ordained it?(CA)
38 Do not both adversity and good
come from the mouth of the Most High?(CB)
39 Why should any living person complain,
any man, because of the punishment for his sins?

נ Nun

40 Let’s examine and probe our ways,
and turn back to the Lord.(CC)
41 Let’s lift up our hearts and our hands(CD)
to God in heaven:
42 “We have sinned and rebelled;
you have not forgiven.(CE)

ס Samek

43 “You have covered yourself in anger and pursued us;
you have killed without compassion.(CF)
44 You have covered yourself with a cloud
so that no prayer can get through.(CG)
45 You have made us disgusting filth
among the peoples.(CH)

פ Pe

46 “All our enemies
open their mouths against us.(CI)
47 We have experienced panic and pitfall,(CJ)
devastation and destruction.”
48 My eyes flow with streams of tears
because of the destruction of my dear people.

ע Ayin

49 My eyes overflow unceasingly,
without end,(CK)
50 until the Lord looks down
from heaven and sees.(CL)
51 My eyes bring me grief
because of the fate of all the women in my city.

צ Tsade

52 For no reason, my enemies[t]
hunted me like a bird.(CM)
53 They smothered my life in[u] a pit(CN)
and threw stones on me.
54 Water flooded over my head,(CO)
and I thought, “I’m going to die!” (CP)

ק Qoph

55 I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths of the pit.
56 You heard my plea:
Do not ignore my cry for relief.
57 You came near whenever I called you;
you said, “Do not be afraid.”

ר Resh

58 You championed my cause, Lord;(CQ)
you redeemed my life.(CR)
59 Lord, you saw the wrong done to me;
judge my case.
60 You saw all their vengefulness,
all their plots against me.(CS)

שׂ Sin / שׁ Shin

61 Lord, you heard their insults,(CT)
all their plots against me.
62 The slander[v] and murmuring of my opponents
attack me all day long.
63 When they sit and when they rise, look,
I am mocked by their songs.(CU)

ת Taw

64 You will pay them back what they deserve, Lord,
according to the work of their hands.(CV)
65 You will give them a heart filled with anguish.[w](CW)
May your curse be on them!
66 You will pursue them in anger and destroy them
under your heavens.[x](CX)

Greeting

Paul, Silvanus,[a](A) and Timothy:(B)

To the church of the Thessalonians(C) in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

God’s Judgment and Glory

We ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, since your faith is flourishing and the love(D) each one of you has for one another(E) is increasing.(F) Therefore, we ourselves boast(G) about you among God’s churches—about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions that you are enduring. It is clear evidence of God’s righteous(H) judgment(I) that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering,(J) since it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you and to give relief to you who are afflicted, along with us. This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels, when he takes vengeance with flaming fire(K) on those who don’t know God(L) and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.(M) They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction(N) from the Lord’s presence(O) and from his glorious strength(P) 10 on that day when he comes(Q) to be glorified(R) by his saints(S) and to be marveled at by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed. 11 In view of this, we always pray for you that our God will make you worthy of his calling,(T) and by his power fulfill your every desire to do good[b] and your work produced by faith,(U) 12 so that the name(V) of our Lord Jesus will be glorified(W) by you, and you by him,(X) according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

53 Fury seizes me(A) because of the wicked
who reject your instruction.(B)
54 Your statutes are the theme of my song
during my earthly life.[a]
55 Lord, I remember your name(C) in the night,(D)
and I obey your instruction.
56 This is my practice:
I obey your precepts.(E)
