⁸ Jerusalem has sinned^(A) greatly
    and so has become unclean.^(B)
All who honored her despise her,
    for they have all seen her naked;^(C)
she herself groans^(D)
    and turns away.

²⁰ “See, Lord, how distressed^(A) I am!
    I am in torment^(B) within,
and in my heart I am disturbed,^(C)
    for I have been most rebellious.^(D)
Outside, the sword bereaves;
    inside, there is only death.^(E)

²¹ “People have heard my groaning,^(F)
    but there is no one to comfort me.^(G)
All my enemies have heard of my distress;
    they rejoice^(H) at what you have done.
May you bring the day^(I) you have announced
    so they may become like me.

²² “Let all their wickedness come before you;
    deal with them
as you have dealt with me
    because of all my sins.^(J)
My groans^(K) are many
    and my heart is faint.”

⁹ So justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;^(T)
    for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
¹⁰ Like the blind^(U) we grope along the wall,
    feeling our way like people without eyes.
At midday we stumble^(V) as if it were twilight;
    among the strong, we are like the dead.^(W)
11 We all growl like bears;
    we moan mournfully like doves.^(X)
We look for justice, but find none;
    for deliverance, but it is far away.

¹² For our offenses^(Y) are many in your sight,
    and our sins testify^(Z) against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
    and we acknowledge our iniquities:^(AA)
13 rebellion^(AB) and treachery against the Lord,
    turning our backs^(AC) on our God,
inciting revolt and oppression,^(AD)
    uttering lies^(AE) our hearts have conceived.

¹¹ All her people groan^(A)
    as they search for bread;^(B)
they barter their treasures for food
    to keep themselves alive.
“Look, Lord, and consider,
    for I am despised.”

⁴ The roads to Zion mourn,^(A)
    for no one comes to her appointed festivals.
All her gateways are desolate,^(B)
    her priests groan,
her young women grieve,
    and she is in bitter anguish.^(C)

⁵ Her foes have become her masters;
    her enemies are at ease.
The Lord has brought her grief^(D)
    because of her many sins.^(E)
Her children have gone into exile,^(F)
    captive before the foe.^(G)

²⁶ I will pull up your skirts over your face
    that your shame may be seen^(A)—

²² And if you ask yourself,
    “Why has this happened to me?”^(A)—
it is because of your many sins^(B)
    that your skirts have been torn off^(C)
    and your body mistreated.^(D)

¹⁰ So now I will expose^(A) her lewdness
    before the eyes of her lovers;^(B)
    no one will take her out of my hands.^(C)
