The Holy Stones Lie Scattered
4 (A)How the gold has grown dim,
how the pure gold is changed!
The holy stones lie scattered
(B)at the head of every street.
2 The precious sons of Zion,
worth their weight in (C)fine gold,
how they are regarded as (D)earthen pots,
the work of a potter's hands!
3 Even jackals offer the breast;
they nurse their young;
but the daughter of my people has become cruel,
like the ostriches in the wilderness.
4 The tongue of the nursing infant (E)sticks
to the roof of its mouth for thirst;
(F)the children beg for food,
but no one gives to them.
5 Those who once feasted on delicacies
perish in the streets;
(G)those who were brought up in purple
embrace ash heaps.
6 (H)For the chastisement[a] of the daughter of my people has been greater
than the punishment[b] of Sodom,
(I)which was overthrown in a moment,
and no hands were wrung for her.[c]
7 Her princes were purer than snow,
whiter than milk;
their bodies were more ruddy than coral,
the beauty of their form[d] was like sapphire.[e]
8 (J)Now their face is blacker than soot;
they are not recognized in the streets;
their skin has shriveled on their bones;
it has become as dry as wood.
9 Happier were the victims of the sword
than the victims of hunger,
who wasted away, pierced
by lack of the fruits of the field.
10 (K)The hands of (L)compassionate women
(M)have boiled their own children;
(N)they became their food
during the destruction of the daughter of my people.
11 (O)The Lord gave full vent to his wrath;
he poured out his hot anger,
and (P)he kindled a fire in Zion
that consumed its foundations.
12 (Q)The kings of the earth did not believe,
nor any of the inhabitants of the world,
that foe or enemy could enter
the gates of Jerusalem.
13 This was for (R)the sins of her prophets
and (S)the iniquities of her priests,
who shed in the midst of her
the blood of the righteous.
14 (T)They wandered, blind, through the streets;
they were so defiled with blood
(U)that no one was able to touch
their garments.
15 “Away! (V)Unclean!” people cried at them.
“Away! Away! Do not touch!”
So they became fugitives and wanderers;
people said among the nations,
“They shall stay with us no longer.”
16 (W)The Lord himself[f] has scattered them;
he will regard them no more;
(X)no honor was shown to the priests,
(Y)no favor to the elders.
17 (Z)Our eyes failed, ever watching
(AA)vainly for help;
in our watching we watched
for (AB)a nation which could not save.
18 (AC)They dogged our steps
so that we could not walk in our streets;
(AD)our end drew near; our days were numbered,
for our end had come.
19 Our pursuers were (AE)swifter
than the eagles in the heavens;
they chased us on the mountains;
they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.
20 (AF)The breath of our nostrils, (AG)the Lord's anointed,
was captured (AH)in their pits,
of whom we said, (AI)“Under his shadow
we shall live among the nations.”
21 (AJ)Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
you who dwell in (AK)the land of Uz;
but to you also (AL)the cup shall pass;
you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.
22 (AM)The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
he will keep you in exile no longer;[g]
but (AN)your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
he will uncover your sins.
Restore Us to Yourself, O Lord
5 (AO)Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us;
look, and see (AP)our disgrace!
2 (AQ)Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,
our homes to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans, fatherless;
our mothers are like widows.
4 We must pay for the water we drink;
the wood we get must be bought.
5 (AR)Our pursuers are at our necks;
we are weary; we are given no rest.
6 We have given the hand to (AS)Egypt, and to (AT)Assyria,
to get bread enough.
7 Our fathers sinned, and are no more;
(AU)and we bear their iniquities.
8 (AV)Slaves rule over us;
there is none to deliver us from their hand.
9 (AW)We get our bread at the peril of our lives,
because of the sword in the wilderness.
10 (AX)Our skin is hot as an oven
with (AY)the burning heat of famine.
11 Women are raped in Zion,
young women in the towns of Judah.
12 (AZ)Princes are hung up by their hands;
(BA)no respect is shown to the elders.
13 Young men are compelled to (BB)grind at the mill,
and boys stagger (BC)under loads of wood.
14 (BD)The old men have left the city gate,
the young men (BE)their music.
15 (BF)The joy of our hearts has ceased;
(BG)our dancing has been turned to mourning.
16 (BH)The crown has fallen from our head;
woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 For this (BI)our heart has become sick,
for these things (BJ)our eyes have grown dim,
18 for Mount Zion which lies desolate;
(BK)jackals prowl over it.
19 (BL)But you, O Lord, reign forever;
your throne endures to all generations.
20 (BM)Why do you forget us forever,
why do you forsake us for so many days?
21 (BN)Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may be restored!
Renew our days as of old—
22 (BO)unless you have utterly rejected us,
and you remain exceedingly angry with us.
Ezekiel in Babylon
1 (BP)In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the exiles by (BQ)the Chebar canal, (BR)the heavens were opened, and I saw (BS)visions of God.[h] 2 On the fifth day of the month (it was (BT)the fifth year of (BU)the exile of King Jehoiachin), 3 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel (BV)the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by (BW)the Chebar canal, and (BX)the hand of the Lord was upon him there.
The Glory of the Lord
4 As I looked, behold, (BY)a stormy wind came (BZ)out of the north, and a great cloud, with (CA)brightness around it, and fire flashing forth continually, and in the midst of the fire, (CB)as it were gleaming metal.[i] 5 And from the midst of it came the likeness of (CC)four living creatures. (CD)And this was their appearance: they had a human likeness, 6 (CE)but each had four faces, and each of them had four wings. 7 Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the sole of a calf's foot. And they sparkled (CF)like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings (CG)on their four sides (CH)they had human hands. And the four had their faces and their wings thus: 9 their wings touched one another. (CI)Each one of them went straight forward, (CJ)without turning as they went. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, (CK)each had a human face. The four had the face of a lion on the right side, the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and the four had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. And their wings were spread out above. Each creature had two wings, each of which touched the wing of another, while (CL)two covered their bodies. 12 (CM)And each went straight forward. (CN)Wherever the spirit[j] would go, they went, without turning as they went. 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was (CO)like burning coals of fire, (CP)like the appearance of torches moving to and fro among the living creatures. (CQ)And the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14 And the living creatures (CR)darted to and fro, (CS)like the appearance of a flash of lightning.
15 (CT)Now as I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, one for each of the four of them.[k] 16 (CU)As for the appearance of the wheels and their construction: their appearance was like (CV)the gleaming of beryl. (CW)And the four had the same likeness, their appearance and construction being as it were a wheel within a wheel. 17 (CX)When they went, they went (CY)in any of their four directions[l] (CZ)without turning as they went. 18 And their rims were tall and awesome, (DA)and the rims of all four were full of eyes all around. 19 (DB)And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them; (DC)and when the living creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose. 20 (DD)Wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went, and the wheels rose along with them, (DE)for the spirit of the living creatures[m] was in the wheels. 21 (DF)When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; (DG)and when those rose from the earth, the wheels rose along with them, (DH)for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was (DI)the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring (DJ)crystal, spread out above their heads. 23 And under the expanse their wings were (DK)stretched out straight, one toward another. (DL)And each creature had two wings covering its body. 24 And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings (DM)like the sound of many waters, like (DN)the sound of the (DO)Almighty, a sound of tumult (DP)like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. 25 And there came a voice from above (DQ)the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings.
26 And above the expanse over their heads there was (DR)the likeness of a throne, (DS)in appearance (DT)like sapphire;[n] and seated above the likeness of a throne was (DU)a likeness with a human appearance. 27 And (DV)upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were (DW)gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and (DX)there was brightness around him.[o] 28 Like the appearance of (DY)the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around.
Such was the appearance of the likeness of (DZ)the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, (EA)I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

4 [a]How the gold has lost its luster,
the fine gold become dull!
The sacred gems are scattered
at every street corner.(A)
2 How the precious children of Zion,(B)
once worth their weight in gold,
are now considered as pots of clay,
the work of a potter’s hands!
3 Even jackals offer their breasts
to nurse their young,
but my people have become heartless
like ostriches in the desert.(C)
4 Because of thirst(D) the infant’s tongue
sticks to the roof of its mouth;(E)
the children beg for bread,
but no one gives it to them.(F)
5 Those who once ate delicacies
are destitute in the streets.
Those brought up in royal purple(G)
now lie on ash heaps.(H)
6 The punishment of my people
is greater than that of Sodom,(I)
which was overthrown in a moment
without a hand turned to help her.
7 Their princes were brighter than snow
and whiter than milk,
their bodies more ruddy than rubies,
their appearance like lapis lazuli.
8 But now they are blacker(J) than soot;
they are not recognized in the streets.
Their skin has shriveled on their bones;(K)
it has become as dry as a stick.
9 Those killed by the sword are better off
than those who die of famine;(L)
racked with hunger, they waste away
for lack of food from the field.(M)
10 With their own hands compassionate women
have cooked their own children,(N)
who became their food
when my people were destroyed.
11 The Lord has given full vent to his wrath;(O)
he has poured out(P) his fierce anger.(Q)
He kindled a fire(R) in Zion
that consumed her foundations.(S)
12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
nor did any of the peoples of the world,
that enemies and foes could enter
the gates of Jerusalem.(T)
13 But it happened because of the sins of her prophets
and the iniquities of her priests,(U)
who shed within her
the blood(V) of the righteous.
14 Now they grope through the streets
as if they were blind.(W)
They are so defiled with blood(X)
that no one dares to touch their garments.
15 “Go away! You are unclean!” people cry to them.
“Away! Away! Don’t touch us!”
When they flee and wander(Y) about,
people among the nations say,
“They can stay here no longer.”(Z)
16 The Lord himself has scattered them;
he no longer watches over them.(AA)
The priests are shown no honor,
the elders(AB) no favor.(AC)
17 Moreover, our eyes failed,
looking in vain(AD) for help;(AE)
from our towers we watched
for a nation(AF) that could not save us.
18 People stalked us at every step,
so we could not walk in our streets.
Our end was near, our days were numbered,
for our end had come.(AG)
19 Our pursuers were swifter
than eagles(AH) in the sky;
they chased us(AI) over the mountains
and lay in wait for us in the desert.(AJ)
20 The Lord’s anointed,(AK) our very life breath,
was caught in their traps.(AL)
We thought that under his shadow(AM)
we would live among the nations.
21 Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom,
you who live in the land of Uz.(AN)
But to you also the cup(AO) will be passed;
you will be drunk and stripped naked.(AP)
22 Your punishment will end, Daughter Zion;(AQ)
he will not prolong your exile.
But he will punish your sin, Daughter Edom,
and expose your wickedness.(AR)
5 Remember, Lord, what has happened to us;
look, and see our disgrace.(AS)
2 Our inheritance(AT) has been turned over to strangers,(AU)
our homes(AV) to foreigners.(AW)
3 We have become fatherless,
our mothers are widows.(AX)

to get enough bread.

9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives
because of the sword in the desert.
10 Our skin is hot as an oven,
feverish from hunger.(BH)
11 Women have been violated(BI) in Zion,
and virgins in the towns of Judah.
12 Princes have been hung up by their hands;
elders(BJ) are shown no respect.(BK)
13 Young men toil at the millstones;
boys stagger under loads of wood.
14 The elders are gone from the city gate;
the young men have stopped their music.(BL)
15 Joy is gone from our hearts;
our dancing has turned to mourning.(BM)

Woe to us, for we have sinned!(BP)
17 Because of this our hearts(BQ) are faint,(BR)

Ezekiel’s Inaugural Vision
1 In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles(CD) by the Kebar River,(CE) the heavens were opened(CF) and I saw visions(CG) of God.
2 On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin(CH)— 3 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel(CI) the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians.[b] There the hand of the Lord was on him.(CJ)
4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm(CK) coming out of the north(CL)—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal,(CM) 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures.(CN) In appearance their form was human,(CO) 6 but each of them had four faces(CP) and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze.(CQ) 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands.(CR) All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.(CS)
10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.(CT) 11 Such were their faces. They each had two wings(CU) spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went.(CV) 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals(CW) of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning(CX) flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.(CY)
15 As I looked at the living creatures,(CZ) I saw a wheel(DA) on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz,(DB) and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction(DC) as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes(DD) all around.
19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go,(DE) and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.(DF)
22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault,(DG) sparkling like crystal, and awesome. 23 Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing(DH) waters, like the voice(DI) of the Almighty,[c] like the tumult of an army.(DJ) When they stood still, they lowered their wings.
25 Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. 26 Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne(DK) of lapis lazuli,(DL) and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man.(DM) 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.(DN) 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow(DO) in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.(DP)
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory(DQ) of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown,(DR) and I heard the voice of one speaking.

3 Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing (A)to be left behind at Athens alone, 2 and we (B)sent Timothy, (C)our brother and God's coworker[a] in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith, 3 that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that (D)we are destined for this. 4 For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, (E)just as it has come to pass, and just as you know. 5 For this reason, (F)when I could bear it no longer, (G)I sent to learn about your faith, (H)for fear that somehow (I)the tempter had tempted you and (J)our labor would be in vain.
Timothy's Encouraging Report
6 But (K)now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of (L)your faith and love and reported (M)that you always remember us kindly and (N)long to see us, as we long to see you— 7 for this reason, brothers,[b] in all our distress and affliction (O)we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you (P)are standing fast in the Lord. 9 For (Q)what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly (R)night and day (S)that we may see you face to face and (T)supply what is lacking in your faith?
11 Now may (U)our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, (V)direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord (W)make you increase and abound in love (X)for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may (Y)establish your hearts blameless in holiness before (Z)our God and Father, at (AA)the coming of our Lord Jesus (AB)with all his saints.

11 Now may our God and Father(V) himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other(W) and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless(X) and holy in the presence of our God and Father(Y) when our Lord Jesus comes(Z) with all his holy ones.(AA)
