The Holy Stones Lie Scattered

(A)How the gold has grown dim,
    how the pure gold is changed!
The holy stones lie scattered
    (B)at the head of every street.

The precious sons of Zion,
    worth their weight in (C)fine gold,
how they are regarded as (D)earthen pots,
    the work of a potter's hands!

Even jackals offer the breast;
    they nurse their young;
but the daughter of my people has become cruel,
    like the ostriches in the wilderness.

The tongue of the nursing infant (E)sticks
    to the roof of its mouth for thirst;
(F)the children beg for food,
    but no one gives to them.

Those who once feasted on delicacies
    perish in the streets;
(G)those who were brought up in purple
    embrace ash heaps.

(H)For the chastisement[a] of the daughter of my people has been greater
    than the punishment[b] of Sodom,
(I)which was overthrown in a moment,
    and no hands were wrung for her.[c]

Her princes were purer than snow,
    whiter than milk;
their bodies were more ruddy than coral,
    the beauty of their form[d] was like sapphire.[e]

(J)Now their face is blacker than soot;
    they are not recognized in the streets;
their skin has shriveled on their bones;
    it has become as dry as wood.

Happier were the victims of the sword
    than the victims of hunger,
who wasted away, pierced
    by lack of the fruits of the field.

10 (K)The hands of (L)compassionate women
    (M)have boiled their own children;
(N)they became their food
    during the destruction of the daughter of my people.

11 (O)The Lord gave full vent to his wrath;
    he poured out his hot anger,
and (P)he kindled a fire in Zion
    that consumed its foundations.

12 (Q)The kings of the earth did not believe,
    nor any of the inhabitants of the world,
that foe or enemy could enter
    the gates of Jerusalem.

13 This was for (R)the sins of her prophets
    and (S)the iniquities of her priests,
who shed in the midst of her
    the blood of the righteous.

14 (T)They wandered, blind, through the streets;
    they were so defiled with blood
(U)that no one was able to touch
    their garments.

15 “Away! (V)Unclean!” people cried at them.
    “Away! Away! Do not touch!”
So they became fugitives and wanderers;
    people said among the nations,
    “They shall stay with us no longer.”

16 (W)The Lord himself[f] has scattered them;
    he will regard them no more;
(X)no honor was shown to the priests,
    (Y)no favor to the elders.

17 (Z)Our eyes failed, ever watching
    (AA)vainly for help;
in our watching we watched
    for (AB)a nation which could not save.

18 (AC)They dogged our steps
    so that we could not walk in our streets;
(AD)our end drew near; our days were numbered,
    for our end had come.

19 Our pursuers were (AE)swifter
    than the eagles in the heavens;
they chased us on the mountains;
    they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

20 (AF)The breath of our nostrils, (AG)the Lord's anointed,
    was captured (AH)in their pits,
of whom we said, (AI)“Under his shadow
    we shall live among the nations.”

21 (AJ)Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
    you who dwell in (AK)the land of Uz;
but to you also (AL)the cup shall pass;
    you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.

22 (AM)The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
    he will keep you in exile no longer;[g]
but (AN)your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
    he will uncover your sins.

Distress of the Siege Described

How (A)dark the gold has become,
How the pure gold has changed!
The sacred stones are spilled out
At the [a]corner of every street.
The precious sons of Zion,
Weighed against pure gold,
How they are regarded as (B)earthenware jars,
The work of a potter’s hands!
Even (C)jackals offer the breast,
They nurse their young;
But the daughter of my people has proved herself (D)cruel,
Like (E)ostriches in the wilderness.
The (F)tongue of the infant clings
To the roof of its mouth because of (G)thirst;
The children (H)ask for bread,
But no one breaks it for them.
Those who used to eat (I)delicacies
Are made to tremble in the streets;
Those who were raised in crimson clothing
Embrace garbage heaps.
For the [b]wrongdoing of the daughter of my people
Is greater than the [c](J)sin of Sodom,
Which was (K)overthrown as in a moment,
[d]And no hands were turned toward her.
Her [e]consecrated ones were (L)purer than snow,
They shined more than milk;
They were more ruddy in [f]body than pearls of coral,
Their form was like [g](M)lapis lazuli.
Their appearance is (N)darker than soot,
They are not recognized in the streets;
Their (O)skin is shriveled on their bones,
It is dry, it has become like wood.
Better off are those (P)killed by the sword
Than those killed by hunger;
For they [h](Q)waste away, [i]stricken
By the lack of the produce of the field.
10 The hands of compassionate women
(R)Boiled their own children;
They became (S)food for them
Due to the destruction of the daughter of my people.
11 The Lord has (T)expended His wrath,
He has poured out His fierce anger;
And He has (U)kindled a fire in Zion,
And it has consumed its foundations.
12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
Nor did any of (V)the inhabitants of the world,
That the adversary and the enemy
Would (W)enter the gates of Jerusalem.
13 Because of the sins of her (X)prophets
And the wrongdoings of her priests,
Who have shed in her midst
The (Y)blood of the righteous,
14 They wandered, (Z)blind, in the streets;
They were defiled with (AA)blood,
Such that no one could touch their (AB)garments.
15 “Keep away! (AC)Unclean!” [j]they cried out of themselves.
“Keep away, keep away, do not touch!”
For they (AD)distanced themselves as well as wandered;
People among the nations said,
“They shall not continue to reside with us.”
16 The presence of the Lord has scattered them,
He will not continue to look at them;
They did not [k](AE)honor the priests,
They did not favor the elders.
17 Yet our eyes failed,
Looking for [l]help was (AF)useless;
At our observation point we have watched
For a (AG)nation that could not save.
18 They (AH)hunted our steps
So that we could not walk in our streets;
Our (AI)end drew near,
Our days were [m]finished
For our end had come.
19 Our pursuers were (AJ)swifter
Than the eagles of the sky;
They chased us on the mountains,
They waited in ambush for us in the wilderness.
20 The (AK)breath of our nostrils, the (AL)Lords anointed,
Was (AM)captured in their pits,
Of whom we had said, “[n]In his (AN)shadow
We shall live among the nations.”
21 Rejoice and be joyful, daughter of (AO)Edom,
Who lives in the land of Uz;
But the (AP)cup will pass to you as well,
You will become drunk and expose yourself.
22 The punishment of your wrongdoing has been (AQ)completed, daughter of Zion;
He will no longer exile you.
But He (AR)will punish your wrongdoing, daughter of Edom;
He will expose your sins!

Devastation of Jerusalem

How dulled is the gold,
    how tarnished the fine gold.
The sacred gems are poured out
    at the corner of every street.
The precious sons of Zion,
    once worth their weight in gold—
alas! now they are treated like clay jars,
    the work of a potter’s hands!
Even jackals offer their breast
    to nurse their young.
The daughter of my people has become cruel,
    like ostriches in the desert.
The nursing infant’s tongue clings
    to the roof of his mouth for thirst.
Little children ask for bread,
    but no one gives it t0 them.
Those who used to eat delicacies
    are desolate in the streets.
Those who were brought up in purple
    embrace trash heaps.
For the iniquities of the daughter of my people
    is greater than the sin of Sodom,
which was overthrown in a moment,[a]
    yet no hands turned to her.
Purer than snow were her princes,[b]
    whiter than milk,
their bodies more ruddy than rubies,
    their appearance like sapphire.
Their form has become darker than soot!
    They are not recognized in the street.
Their skin has shriveled on their bones,
    withered like a tree.
Better are those slain by the sword
    than those struck down by famine—
they waste away, racked with pain,
    for lack of fruits of the field.
10 The hands of compassionate women
    boiled their own children.
They became their food
    when the daughter of my people were destroyed.
11 Adonai has vented His fury.
    He has poured out His burning anger.
Yes, He kindled a fire in Zion
    that devoured her foundations.
12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
    nor did the inhabitations of the world,
that enemy and foe would enter
    the gates of Jerusalem.
13 Yet it happened because of the sins of her prophets,
    and the iniquities of her kohanim,
who shed in her midst
    the blood of the tzadikim[c].
14 They wander in the streets,
    like blind men.
They are so defiled with blood,
    no one can touch their garments.
15 “Turn away! Unclean!”
    They cry to them.
“Turn away, turn away! Don’t touch!”
    So they fled and wandered about.
People among the nations say,
    “They can stay here no longer.”
16 Adonai Himself has scattered them.
    He will look on them no more.
They did not respect the kohanim.
    They did not favor the elders.
17 Even now our eyes waste away
    looking in vain for our help.
From our towers we watched
    for a nation that could not save us.
18 They hunted our steps,
    so we could not walk in our streets.
Our end was near.
    Our days were numbered, for our end had come.
19 Our pursuers were swifter
    than eagles of the sky;
they pursued us over the mountains;
    they ambushed us in the wilderness.
20 The anointed of Adonai,
    the breath of our nostrils,
was captured in their pits,
    of whom we have said,
“Under His shadow we will live among the nations.”
21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
    you who dwell in the land of Uz.
To you also will the cup be passed.
    You will be drunk and stripped naked.
22 O daughter of Zion,
    your punishment is accomplished;
    He will exile you no longer.
But, O daughter of Edom,
    He will punish your iniquity
    and uncover your sins.
