20 Look, O Lord, at how distressed I am;
    my stomach churns;
my heart is wrung within me
    because I have been very rebellious.
In the street the sword bereaves;
    in the house it is like death.(A)

21 They heard how I was groaning,
    with no one to comfort me.
All my enemies heard of my trouble;
    they are glad that you have done it.
Bring on the day that you have announced,
    and let them be as I am.(B)

22 Let all their evildoing come before you,
    and deal with them
as you have dealt with me
    because of all my transgressions;
for my groans are many,
    and my heart is faint.(C)

All my enemies have heard of my distress;

May you bring the day(I) you have announced

Rather, your iniquities have been barriers
    between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
    so that he does not hear.(A)
For your hands are defiled with blood
    and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies;
    your tongue mutters wickedness.(B)
No one brings suit justly;
    no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas; they speak lies,
    conceiving mischief and bearing iniquity.(C)
They hatch adders’ eggs
    and weave the spider’s web;
whoever eats their eggs dies,
    and the crushed egg hatches out a viper.(D)
Their webs cannot serve as clothing;
    they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
    and deeds of violence are in their hands.(E)
Their feet run to evil,
    and they rush to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
    desolation and destruction are in their highways.(F)
The way of peace they do not know,
    and there is no justice in their ways.
Their roads they have made crooked;
    no one who walks in them knows peace.(G)

Therefore justice is far from us,
    and deliverance does not reach us;
we wait for light, but there is only darkness;
    and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.(H)
10 We grope like the blind along a wall,
    groping like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
    among the vigorous[a] as though we were dead.(I)
11 We all growl like bears;
    like doves we moan mournfully.
We wait for justice, but there is none;
    for salvation, but it is far from us.(J)
12 For our transgressions before you are many,
    and our sins testify against us.
Our transgressions indeed are with us,
    and we know our iniquities:(K)
13 transgressing and denying the Lord
    and turning away from following our God,
talking oppression and revolt,
    conceiving lying words and uttering them from the heart.(L)

But your iniquities have separated(A)
    you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
    so that he will not hear.(B)
For your hands are stained with blood,(C)
    your fingers with guilt.(D)
Your lips have spoken falsely,(E)
    and your tongue mutters wicked things.
No one calls for justice;(F)
    no one pleads a case with integrity.
They rely(G) on empty arguments, they utter lies;(H)
    they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.(I)
They hatch the eggs of vipers(J)
    and spin a spider’s web.(K)
Whoever eats their eggs will die,
    and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
Their cobwebs are useless for clothing;
    they cannot cover themselves with what they make.(L)
Their deeds are evil deeds,
    and acts of violence(M) are in their hands.
Their feet rush into sin;
    they are swift to shed innocent blood.(N)
They pursue evil schemes;(O)
    acts of violence mark their ways.(P)
The way of peace they do not know;(Q)
    there is no justice in their paths.
They have turned them into crooked roads;(R)
    no one who walks along them will know peace.(S)

So justice is far from us,
    and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;(T)
    for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
10 Like the blind(U) we grope along the wall,
    feeling our way like people without eyes.
At midday we stumble(V) as if it were twilight;
    among the strong, we are like the dead.(W)
11 We all growl like bears;
    we moan mournfully like doves.(X)
We look for justice, but find none;
    for deliverance, but it is far away.

12 For our offenses(Y) are many in your sight,
    and our sins testify(Z) against us.
Our offenses are ever with us,
    and we acknowledge our iniquities:(AA)
13 rebellion(AB) and treachery against the Lord,
    turning our backs(AC) on our God,
inciting revolt and oppression,(AD)
    uttering lies(AE) our hearts have conceived.

The roads to Zion mourn,

You, mortal, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then declare to it all its abominable deeds.(A) You shall say: Thus says the Lord God: A city! Shedding blood within itself; its time has come; making its idols, defiling itself. You have become guilty by the blood that you have shed and defiled by the idols that you have made; you have brought your days near; the appointed time of your years has come. Therefore I have made you a disgrace before the nations and a mockery to all the countries. Those who are near and those who are far from you will mock you, you infamous one, full of tumult.

The princes of Israel in you, everyone according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood.(B) Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the alien residing within you suffers extortion; the orphan and the widow are wronged in you.(C) You have despised my holy things and profaned my Sabbaths.(D) In you are those who slander to shed blood, those in you who eat upon the mountains, who commit lewdness in your midst.(E) 10 In you they uncover their fathers’ nakedness; in you they violate women during their menstrual periods.(F) 11 One commits abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another lewdly defiles his daughter-in-law; another in you defiles his sister, his father’s daughter.(G) 12 In you, they take bribes to shed blood; you take both advance interest and accrued interest and make gain of your neighbors by extortion, and you have forgotten me, says the Lord God.(H)

13 See, I strike my hands together at the dishonest gain you have made and at the blood that has been shed within you. 14 Can your courage endure, or can your hands remain strong in the days when I shall deal with you? I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.(I) 15 I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the countries, and I will purge your filthiness out of you.(J)

“Son of man, will you judge her? You have brought your days to a close, and the end of your years has come.(E) Therefore I will make you an object of scorn(F) to the nations and a laughingstock to all the countries.(G) Those who are near and those who are far away will mock you, you infamous city, full of turmoil.(H)

“‘See how each of the princes of Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood.(I) In you they have treated father and mother with contempt;(J) in you they have oppressed the foreigner(K) and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.(L) You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths.(M) In you are slanderers(N) who are bent on shedding blood;(O) in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines(P) and commit lewd acts.(Q) 10 In you are those who dishonor their father’s bed;(R) in you are those who violate women during their period,(S) when they are ceremonially unclean.(T) 11 In you one man commits a detestable offense with his neighbor’s wife,(U) another shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law,(V) and another violates his sister,(W) his own father’s daughter.(X) 12 In you are people who accept bribes(Y) to shed blood; you take interest(Z) and make a profit from the poor.
