O cerco, a fome e a ruína de Jerusalém

2 Como cobriu o Senhor de nuvens, na sua ira, a filha de Sião! Derribou do céu à terra a glória de Israel e não se lembrou do escabelo de seus pés, no dia da sua ira.
Bete.
2 Devorou o Senhor todas as moradas de Jacó e não se apiedou; derribou no seu furor as fortalezas da filha de Judá e as abateu até à terra; profanou o reino e os seus príncipes.
Guímel.
3 Cortou, no furor da sua ira, toda a força de Israel; retirou para trás a sua destra de diante do inimigo; e ardeu contra Jacó, como labareda de fogo que tudo consome em redor.
Dálete.
4 Armou o seu arco como inimigo, firmou a sua destra como adversário e matou tudo o que era formoso à vista; derramou a sua indignação, como fogo na tenda da filha de Sião.

5 Tornou-se o Senhor como inimigo; devorou Israel, devorou todos os seus palácios, destruiu as suas fortalezas; e multiplicou na filha de Judá a lamentação e a tristeza.

6 E arrancou a sua cabana com violência, como se fosse a de uma horta; destruiu a sua congregação; o Senhor, em Sião, pôs em esquecimento a solenidade e o sábado e, na indignação da sua ira, rejeitou com desprezo o rei e o sacerdote.

7 Rejeitou o Senhor o seu altar, detestou o seu santuário; entregou na mão do inimigo os muros dos seus palácios; deram gritos na Casa do Senhor, como em dia de reunião solene.

8 Intentou o Senhor destruir o muro da filha de Sião; estendeu o cordel, não retirou a sua mão destruidora; fez gemer o antemuro e o muro; eles estão juntamente enfraquecidos.

9 Abateram as suas portas; ele destruiu e quebrou os seus ferrolhos; o seu rei e os seus príncipes estão entre as nações onde não há lei, nem acham visão alguma do Senhor os seus profetas.

10 Estão sentados na terra, silenciosos, os anciãos da filha de Sião; lançam pó sobre a sua cabeça, cingiram panos de saco; as virgens de Jerusalém abaixam a sua cabeça até à terra.

11 Já se consumiram os meus olhos com lágrimas, turbada está a minha alma, o meu coração se derramou pela terra, por causa do quebrantamento da filha do meu povo; pois desfalecem os meninos e as crianças de peito pelas ruas da cidade.

12 Dizem a suas mães: Onde há trigo e vinho? Quando desfalecem como o ferido pelas ruas da cidade, derramando-se a sua alma no regaço de suas mães.

13 Que testemunho te trarei? A quem te compararei, ó filha de Jerusalém? A quem te assemelharei, para te consolar a ti, ó virgem filha de Sião? Porque grande como o mar é a tua ferida; quem te sarará?
Nun.
14 Os teus profetas viram para ti vaidade e loucura e não manifestaram a tua maldade, para afastarem o teu cativeiro; mas viram para ti cargas vãs e motivos de expulsão.

15 Todos os que passam pelo caminho batem palmas, assobiam e meneiam a cabeça sobre a filha de Jerusalém, dizendo: É esta a cidade que denominavam perfeita em formosura, gozo de toda a terra?

16 Todos os teus inimigos abrem a boca contra ti, assobiam e rangem os dentes; dizem: Devoramo-la; certamente este é o dia que esperávamos; achamo-lo e vimo-lo.

17 Fez o Senhor o que intentou; cumpriu a sua palavra, que ordenou desde os dias da antiguidade: derribou e não se apiedou; fez que o inimigo se alegrasse por tua causa, exaltou o poder dos teus adversários.

18 O coração deles clamou ao Senhor: Ó muralha da filha de Sião, corram as tuas lágrimas como um ribeiro, de dia e de noite; não te dês descanso, nem parem as meninas de teus olhos.

19 Levanta-te, clama de noite no princípio das vigílias; derrama o teu coração como águas diante da face do Senhor; levanta a ele as tuas mãos, pela vida de teus filhinhos, que desfalecem de fome à entrada de todas as ruas.

20 Vê, ó Senhor, e considera a quem fizeste assim! Hão de as mulheres comer o fruto de si mesmas, as crianças que trazem nos braços? Ou matar-se-á no santuário do Senhor o sacerdote e o profeta?

21 Jazem em terra pelas ruas o moço e o velho; as minhas virgens e os meus jovens vieram a cair à espada; tu os mataste no dia da tua ira; degolaste-os e não te apiedaste deles.

22 Convocaste de toda parte os meus receios, como em um dia de solenidade; não houve no dia da ira do Senhor quem escapasse ou ficasse; aqueles que trouxe nas mãos e sustentei, o meu inimigo os consumiu.

2 O Senhor cobriu a cidade de Sião
com a nuvem da sua ira!
Lançou por terra o esplendor de Israel,
que se elevava para os céus;
não se lembrou do estrado dos seus pés
no dia da sua ira.
2 Sem piedade o Senhor devorou
todas as habitações de Jacó;
em sua ira destruiu as fortalezas
da filha de Judá.
Derrubou ao chão e desonrou
o seu reino e os seus líderes.
3 Em sua flamejante ira,
cortou todo o poder[a] de Israel.
Retirou a sua mão direita
diante da aproximação do inimigo.
Queimou Jacó como um fogo ardente
que consome tudo ao redor.
4 Como um inimigo, preparou o seu arco;
como um adversário,
a sua mão direita está pronta.
Ele massacrou tudo o que era
agradável contemplar;
derramou sua ira como fogo
sobre a tenda da cidade de Sião.
5 O Senhor é como um inimigo;
ele tem devorado Israel.
Tem devorado todos os seus palácios
e destruído as suas fortalezas.
Tem feito multiplicar os prantos
e as lamentações da filha de Judá.
6 Ele destroçou a sua morada
como se fosse um simples jardim;
destruiu o seu local de reuniões.
O Senhor fez esquecidas em Sião
suas festas fixas e seus sábados;
em seu grande furor
rejeitou o rei e o sacerdote.
7 O Senhor rejeitou o seu altar e
abandonou o seu santuário.
Entregou aos inimigos
os muros dos seus palácios,
e eles deram gritos na casa do Senhor,
como fazíamos nos dias de festa.
8 O Senhor está decidido
a derrubar os muros da cidade de Sião.
Esticou a trena e
não poupou a sua mão destruidora.
Fez com que os muros e as paredes
se lamentassem;
juntos eles se desmoronaram.
9 Suas portas caíram por terra;
suas trancas ele quebrou e destruiu.
O seu rei e os seus líderes
foram exilados para diferentes nações,
e a lei já não existe;
seus profetas já não recebem
visões do Senhor.
10 Os líderes da cidade de Sião
sentam-se no chão em silêncio;
despejam pó sobre a cabeça
e usam vestes de lamento.
As moças de Jerusalém
inclinam a cabeça até o chão.
11 Meus olhos estão cansados de chorar,
minha alma está atormentada,
meu coração se derrama,
porque o meu povo está destruído,
porque crianças e bebês desmaiam
pelas ruas da cidade.
12 Eles clamam às suas mães:
“Onde estão o pão e o vinho?”
Ao mesmo tempo em que desmaiam
pelas ruas da cidade, como os feridos,
e suas vidas se desvanecem
nos braços de suas mães.
13 Que posso dizer a seu favor?
Com que posso compará-la,
ó cidade de Jerusalém?
Com que posso assemelhá-la,
a fim de trazer-lhe consolo,
ó virgem, ó cidade de Sião?
Sua ferida é tão profunda quanto o oceano;
quem pode curá-la?
14 As visões dos seus profetas
eram falsas e inúteis;
eles não expuseram o seu pecado
para evitar o seu cativeiro.
As mensagens que eles lhe deram
eram falsas e enganosas.
15 Todos os que cruzam o seu caminho
batem palmas;
eles zombam e meneiam a cabeça
diante da cidade de Jerusalém:
“É esta a cidade que era chamada
a perfeição da beleza,
a alegria de toda a terra?”
16 Todos os seus inimigos
escancaram a boca contra você;
eles zombam, rangem os dentes
e dizem: “Nós a devoramos.
Este é o dia que esperávamos;
e eis que vivemos até vê-lo chegar!”
17 O Senhor fez o que planejou;
cumpriu a sua palavra,
que há muito havia decretado.
Derrubou tudo sem piedade,
permitiu que o inimigo zombasse de você,
exaltou o poder dos seus adversários.
18 O coração do povo clama ao Senhor.
Ó muro da cidade de Sião,
corram como um rio
as suas lágrimas dia e noite;
não se permita nenhum descanso
nem dê repouso à menina dos seus olhos.
19 Levante-se, grite no meio da noite,
quando começam as vigílias noturnas;
derrame o seu coração como água
na presença do Senhor.
Levante para ele as mãos
em favor da vida de seus filhos,
que desmaiam de fome
nas esquinas de todas as ruas.
20 “Olha, Senhor, e considera:
A quem trataste dessa maneira?
Deverão as mulheres comer seus próprios filhos,
que elas criaram com tanto amor?
Deverão os profetas e os sacerdotes
ser assassinados no santuário
do Senhor?
21 Jovens e velhos espalham-se
em meio ao pó das ruas;
meus jovens e minhas virgens
caíram mortos à espada.
Tu os sacrificaste no dia da tua ira;
tu os mataste sem piedade.
22 Como se faz convocação
para um dia de festa,
convocaste contra mim
terrores por todos os lados.
No dia da ira do Senhor,
ninguém escapou nem sobreviveu;
aqueles dos quais eu cuidava
e que eu fiz crescer,
o meu inimigo destruiu.”

with the cloud of his anger[b]!(A)
He has hurled down the splendor of Israel
from heaven to earth;
he has not remembered his footstool(B)
in the day of his anger.(C)
2 Without pity(D) the Lord has swallowed(E) up
all the dwellings of Jacob;
in his wrath he has torn down
the strongholds(F) of Daughter Judah.
He has brought her kingdom and its princes
down to the ground(G) in dishonor.
3 In fierce anger he has cut off
every horn[c][d](H) of Israel.
He has withdrawn his right hand(I)
at the approach of the enemy.
He has burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
that consumes everything around it.(J)
4 Like an enemy he has strung his bow;(K)
his right hand is ready.
Like a foe he has slain
all who were pleasing to the eye;(L)

they have raised a shout in the house of the Lord

The young women of Jerusalem

I am in torment within(AQ);

because my people are destroyed,(AT)

in the streets of the city.
12 They say to their mothers,

14 The visions of your prophets
were false(BC) and worthless;
they did not expose your sin
to ward off your captivity.(BD)
The prophecies they gave you
were false and misleading.(BE)
15 All who pass your way
clap their hands at you;(BF)

at Daughter Jerusalem:(BI)
“Is this the city that was called

16 All your enemies open their mouths

2 How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion
With a (A)cloud in His anger!
(B)He cast down from heaven to the earth
(C)The beauty of Israel,
And did not remember (D)His footstool
In the day of His anger.
2 The Lord has swallowed up and has (E)not pitied
All the dwelling places of Jacob.
He has thrown down in His wrath
The strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
He has brought them down to the ground;
(F)He has profaned the kingdom and its princes.
3 He has cut off in fierce anger
Every [a]horn of Israel;
(G)He has drawn back His right hand
From before the enemy.
(H)He has blazed against Jacob like a flaming fire
Devouring all around.

He has fulfilled His word
Which He commanded in days of old.
He has thrown down and has not pitied,

He has exalted the [l]horn of your adversaries.
18 Their heart cried out to the Lord,
“O wall of the daughter of Zion,

Give yourself no relief;
Give [m]your eyes no rest.
19 “Arise, (AR)cry out in the night,
At the beginning of the watches;
(AS)Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord.
Lift your hands toward Him
For the life of your young children,

20 “See, O Lord, and consider!
To whom have You done this?

Should the priest and prophet be slain
In the sanctuary of the Lord?

My virgins and my young men
