    are destitute in the streets.
Those brought up in royal purple^(A)

⁷ Give her as much torment and grief
    as the glory and luxury she gave herself.^(A)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;^[a]
    I will never mourn.’^(B)
8 Therefore in one day^(C) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,^(D)
    for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

⁶ Therefore a curse^(A) consumes the earth;
    its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,^(B)
    and very few are left.
⁷ The new wine dries up^(C) and the vine withers;^(D)
    all the merrymakers groan.^(E)
8 The joyful timbrels^(F) are stilled,
    the noise^(G) of the revelers^(H) has stopped,
    the joyful harp^(I) is silent.^(J)
9 No longer do they drink wine^(K) with a song;
    the beer is bitter^(L) to its drinkers.
¹⁰ The ruined city^(M) lies desolate;^(N)
    the entrance to every house is barred.
¹¹ In the streets they cry out^(O) for wine;^(P)
    all joy turns to gloom,^(Q)
    all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.
¹² The city is left in ruins,^(R)
    its gate^(S) is battered to pieces.
