¹⁷ A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed^(A) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed.

⁹ “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern,^(A) where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread^(B) in the city.”

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard.^(A) They lowered Jeremiah by ropes^(B) into the cistern; it had no water in it,^(C) only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.^(D)

¹⁶ Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time.

⁶⁶ So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal^(A) on the stone^(B) and posting the guard.^(C)

⁶⁰ and placed it in his own new tomb^(A) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

²⁰ But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there.”^(A)
