³⁴ To crush underfoot
    all prisoners in the land,

“Daughter Babylon^(A) is like a threshing floor^(B)
    at the time it is trampled;
    the time to harvest^(C) her will soon come.^(D)”

³⁴ “Nebuchadnezzar^(E) king of Babylon has devoured^(F) us,^(G)
    he has thrown us into confusion,
    he has made us an empty jar.
Like a serpent he has swallowed us
    and filled his stomach with our delicacies,
    and then has spewed^(H) us out.
³⁵ May the violence^(I) done to our flesh^[a] be on Babylon,”
    say the inhabitants of Zion.
“May our blood be on those who live in Babylonia,”
    says Jerusalem.^(J)

“See, I will defend your cause^(K)
    and avenge^(L) you;
I will dry up^(M) her sea
    and make her springs dry.

“The people of Israel are oppressed,^(A)
    and the people of Judah as well.
All their captors hold them fast,
    refusing to let them go.^(B)
34 Yet their Redeemer^(C) is strong;
    the Lord Almighty^(D) is his name.
He will vigorously defend their cause^(E)
    so that he may bring rest^(F) to their land,
    but unrest to those who live in Babylon.

²² This is what your Sovereign Lord says,
    your God, who defends^(A) his people:
“See, I have taken out of your hand
    the cup^(B) that made you stagger;
from that cup, the goblet of my wrath,
    you will never drink again.
²³ I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,^(C)
    who said to you,
    ‘Fall prostrate^(D) that we may walk^(E) on you.’
And you made your back like the ground,
    like a street to be walked on.”^(F)

⁹ to say to the captives,^(A) ‘Come out,’
    and to those in darkness,^(B) ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.^(C)

¹⁷ the man who made the world a wilderness,^(A)
    who overthrew^(B) its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”^(C)

²⁰ to hear the groans of the prisoners^(A)
    and release those condemned to death.”

¹¹ May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
    with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
