(C)he has left me stunned,
    faint all the day long.

17 (A)Our eyes failed, ever watching
    (B)vainly for help;
in our watching we watched
    for (C)a nation which could not save.

18 (D)They dogged our steps
    so that we could not walk in our streets;
(E)our end drew near; our days were numbered,
    for our end had come.

19 Our pursuers were (F)swifter
    than the eagles in the heavens;
they chased us on the mountains;
    they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

20 (G)The breath of our nostrils, (H)the Lord's anointed,
    was captured (I)in their pits,
of whom we said, (J)“Under his shadow
    we shall live among the nations.”

He has cut down in (A)fierce anger
    all (B)the might of Israel;
(C)he has withdrawn from them his right hand
    in the face of the enemy;
(D)he has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob,
    consuming all around.

(E)He has bent his bow like an enemy,
    with his right hand set (F)like a foe;
and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes
    in the tent of the daughter of Zion;
he has poured out his fury like fire.

Anguish over Judah's Desolation

19 (A)My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain!
    Oh the walls of my heart!
My heart is beating wildly;
    I cannot keep silent,
for I hear the sound of the trumpet,
    the alarm of war.
20 (B)Crash follows hard on crash;
    the whole land is laid waste.
(C)Suddenly my tents are laid waste,
    my curtains in a moment.
21 How long must I see the standard
    and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 “For (D)my people are foolish;
    they know me not;
they are stupid children;
    they have no understanding.
(E)They are ‘wise’—in doing evil!
    But how to do good they know not.”

23 I looked on the earth, and behold, it was (F)without form and void;
    (G)and to the heavens, and they had no light.
24 I looked on (H)the mountains, and behold, they were quaking,
    and all the hills moved to and fro.
25 (I)I looked, and behold, there was no man,
    and all the birds of the air had fled.
26 I looked, and behold, the (J)fruitful land was a desert,
    and all its cities were laid in ruins
    before the Lord, before (K)his fierce anger.

27 For thus says the Lord, “The whole land shall be a desolation; (L)yet I will not make a full end.

28 (M)“For this the earth shall mourn,
    (N)and the heavens above be dark;
for I have spoken; I have purposed;
    (O)I have not relented, nor will I turn back.”

29 At the noise of horseman and archer
    every city takes to flight;
they enter thickets; they climb among rocks;
    all the cities are forsaken,
    and (P)no man dwells in them.
