41 Peter said, “Lord, (A)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is (B)the faithful and (C)wise (D)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 (E)Blessed is that servant[a] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, (F)he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master (G)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and (H)get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come (I)on a day when he does not expect him and (J)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 (K)And that servant who (L)knew his master's will but (M)did not get ready (N)or act according to his will, will receive a (O)severe beating. 48 (P)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, (Q)will receive a light beating. (R)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Not Peace, but Division

49 (S)“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 (T)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how (U)great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 (V)Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? (W)No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (X)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds, (Y)“When you see (Z)a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And (AA)when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be (AB)scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! (AC)You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Settle with Your Accuser

57 “And why (AD)do you not judge (AE)for yourselves what is right? 58 (AF)As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, (AG)you will never get out until you have paid the very last (AH)penny.”[b]

Notas al pie

  1. Luke 12:43 Or bondservant; also verses 45, 46, 47
  2. Luke 12:59 Greek lepton, a Jewish bronze or copper coin worth about 1/128 of a denarius (which was a day's wage for a laborer)

41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”

42 The Lord(A) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(B) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(C) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(D) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Not Peace but Division(E)

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(F) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(G) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(H)

Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(I) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(J)

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(K) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(L)
