7 ¶ Levantándose, pues, de mañana Jerobaal, el cual es Gedeón, y todo el pueblo que estaba con él, asentaron el campamento junto a la fuente de Harod; y tenía el campamento de los madianitas al norte, al otro lado del collado de More, en el valle.
2 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón: El pueblo que está contigo es mucho para que yo dé a los madianitas en su mano; para que no se alabe Israel contra mí, diciendo: Mi mano me ha salvado.
3 Haz pues ahora pregonar, que lo oiga el pueblo, diciendo: El que teme y se estremece, madrugue y regrese desde el monte de Galaad. Y regresaron de los del pueblo veintidós mil; y quedaron diez mil.
4 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón: Aún es mucho el pueblo; llévalos a las aguas, y allí yo te los probaré; y del que yo te dijere: Vaya éste contigo, irá contigo; mas de cualquiera que yo te dijere: Este no vaya contigo, el tal no vaya.
5 Entonces llevó el pueblo a las aguas; y el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón: Cualquiera que lamiere las aguas con su lengua como lame el perro, aquel pondrás aparte; asimismo cualquiera que se doblare sobre sus rodillas para beber.
6 Y fue el número de los que lamieron las aguas, llegándola con la mano a la boca, trescientos varones; y todo el resto del pueblo se dobló sobre sus rodillas para beber las aguas.
7 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón: Con estos trescientos varones que lamieron el agua os salvaré, y entregaré a los madianitas en tus manos; y váyase todo el pueblo cada uno a su lugar.
8 Y tomada provisión para el pueblo en sus manos, con sus shofarot, envió a todos los otros israelitas cada uno a su tienda, y retuvo a aquellos trescientos hombres; y tenía el campamento de Madián abajo en el valle.
9 ¶ Y aconteció que aquella noche el SEÑOR le dijo: Levántate, y desciende al campamento; porque yo lo he entregado en tus manos.
10 Y si tienes temor de descender, baja tú con Fura tu criado al campamento,
11 y oirás lo que hablan; y entonces tus manos se esforzarán, y descenderás al campamento. Y él descendió con Fura su criado al principio de la gente de armas que estaba en el campamento.
12 Y Madián, Amalec, y todos los hijos del oriente, estaban tendidos en el valle como langostas en muchedumbre, y sus camellos eran sin contar, como la arena que está a la ribera del mar en multitud.
13 Y cuando llegó Gedeón, he aquí que un hombre estaba contando a su compañero un sueño, diciendo: He aquí yo soñé un sueño: que veía un pan de cebada que rodaba hasta el campamento de Madián, y llegaba a las tiendas, y las hirió de tal manera que cayeron, y las trastornaba de arriba abajo, y las tiendas cayeron.
14 Y su compañero respondió, y dijo: Esto no es otra cosa sino la espada de Gedeón hijo de Joás, varón de Israel; Dios ha entregado en sus manos a los madianitas con todo el campamento.
15 Y cuando Gedeón oyó la historia del sueño y su interpretación, adoró; y vuelto al campamento de Israel, dijo: Levantaos, que el SEÑOR ha entregado el campamento de Madián en vuestras manos.
16 ¶ Y repartiendo los trescientos hombres en tres escuadrones, le dio a cada uno de ellos un shofar en sus manos, y cántaros vacíos con teas ardiendo dentro de los cántaros.
17 Y les dijo: Miradme a mí, y haced como yo hiciere; he aquí que cuando yo llegare al principio del campamento, como yo hiciere, así haréis vosotros.
18 Yo tocaré el shofar y todos los que estarán conmigo; y vosotros tocaréis entonces las trompetas alrededor de todo el campamento, y diréis: ¡YO SOY El Talador! {Heb. YWHW-Gedeón}
19 Llegó pues Gedeón, y los cien varones que llevaba consigo, al principio del campamento, al principio de la vela del medio, cuando solamente los guardias estaban despiertos; y tocaron los shofarot, y quebraron los cántaros que llevaban en sus manos.
20 Y los tres escuadrones tocaron sus shofarot, y quebrando los cántaros tomaron en la mano izquierda las teas, y en la derecha los shofarot con que tocaban, y gritaron: –¡La espada de YO SOY El Talador! {Heb. YHWH-Gedeón}
21 Y se estuvieron en sus lugares en derredor del campamento; y todo el campamento fue alborotado, y huyeron gritando.
22 Mas los trescientos tocaban los shofarot; y el SEÑOR puso la espada de cada uno contra su compañero en todo el campamento. Y el ejército huyó hasta Bet-sita, hacia Zerera, y hasta el término de Abel-mehola en Tabat.
23 ¶ Y juntándose los de Israel de Neftalí, y de Aser, y de todo Manasés, siguieron a los madianitas.
24 Gedeón también envió mensajeros a todo el monte de Efraín, diciendo: Descended al encuentro de los madianitas, y tomadles las aguas hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán. Y juntos todos los varones de Efraín, tomaron las aguas de Bet-bara y el Jordán.
25 Y tomaron dos príncipes de los madianitas, Oreb y Zeeb; y mataron a Oreb en la peña de Oreb, y a Zeeb lo mataron en el lagar de Zeeb; y después que siguieron a los madianitas, trajeron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón al otro lado del Jordán.

Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Yerubaal —es decir, Gedeón— y todos sus hombres se levantaron de madrugada y acamparon en el manantial de Jarod. El campamento de los madianitas estaba al norte de ellos, en el valle que está al pie del monte de Moré. 2 El Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Tienes demasiada gente para que yo entregue a Madián en sus manos. A fin de que Israel no vaya a jactarse contra mí y diga que su propia fortaleza lo ha librado, 3 anúnciale ahora al pueblo: “¡Cualquiera que esté temblando de miedo, que se vuelva y se retire del monte de Galaad!”». Así que se volvieron veintidós mil hombres y se quedaron diez mil.
4 Pero el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Todavía hay demasiada gente. Hazlos bajar al agua y allí los seleccionaré por ti. Si digo: “Este irá contigo”, ese irá; pero si digo: “Este no irá contigo”, ese no irá».
5 Gedeón hizo que los hombres bajaran al agua. Allí el Señor le dijo: «A los que laman el agua con la lengua, como los perros, sepáralos de los que se arrodillen a beber».
6 Trescientos hombres lamieron el agua llevándola de la mano a la boca. Todos los demás se arrodillaron para beber.
7 El Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Con los trescientos hombres que lamieron el agua, yo los salvaré; entregaré a los madianitas en tus manos. El resto, que se vaya a su casa».
8 Entonces Gedeón mandó a los demás israelitas a sus tiendas de campaña, pero retuvo a los trescientos, los cuales se hicieron cargo de las provisiones y de las trompetas de los otros.
El campamento de Madián estaba situado en el valle, más abajo del de Gedeón. 9 Aquella noche el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Levántate y baja al campamento, porque voy a entregar en tus manos a los madianitas. 10 Si temes atacar, baja primero al campamento con tu criado Furá 11 y escucha lo que digan. Después de eso cobrarás valor para atacar el campamento».
Así que él y Furá, su criado, bajaron hasta los puestos de los centinelas, en las afueras del campamento. 12 Los madianitas, los amalecitas y todos los otros pueblos del oriente que se habían establecido en el valle eran numerosos como langostas. Sus camellos eran incontables, como la arena a la orilla del mar.
13 Gedeón llegó precisamente en el momento en que un hombre le contaba su sueño a un amigo.
—Tuve un sueño —decía—, en el que un pan de cebada llegaba rodando al campamento madianita, y con tal fuerza golpeaba una tienda de campaña que esta se volteaba y se venía abajo.
14 Su amigo respondió:
—Esto no significa otra cosa que la espada del israelita Gedeón, hijo de Joás. ¡Dios ha entregado en sus manos a los madianitas y a todo el campamento!
15 Cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño y su interpretación, se postró en adoración. Luego volvió al campamento de Israel y ordenó: «¡Levántense! El Señor ha entregado en manos de ustedes el campamento madianita».
16 Gedeón dividió a los trescientos hombres en tres compañías y distribuyó entre todos ellos trompetas y cántaros vacíos, con antorchas dentro de los cántaros.
17 «Mírenme —les dijo—. Sigan mi ejemplo. Cuando llegue a las afueras del campamento, hagan exactamente lo mismo que me vean hacer. 18 Cuando todos los que están conmigo y yo toquemos nuestras trompetas, ustedes también toquen las suyas alrededor del campamento y digan: “Por el Señor y por Gedeón”».
19 Gedeón y los cien hombres que iban con él llegaron a las afueras del campamento durante el cambio de guardia, cuando estaba por comenzar el relevo de medianoche. Tocaron las trompetas y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en sus manos. 20 Las tres compañías tocaron las trompetas e hicieron pedazos los cántaros. Tomaron las antorchas en la mano izquierda y, sosteniendo en la mano derecha las trompetas que iban a tocar, gritaron: «¡Desenvainen sus espadas, por el Señor y por Gedeón!». 21 Como cada hombre se mantuvo en su puesto alrededor del campamento, todos los madianitas salieron corriendo y dando alaridos mientras huían.
22 Al sonar las trescientas trompetas, el Señor hizo que los hombres de todo el campamento se atacaran entre sí con sus espadas. El ejército huyó hasta Bet Sitá, en dirección a Zererá, hasta la frontera de Abel Mejolá, cerca de Tabat. 23 Entonces se convocó a los israelitas de Neftalí y Aser, y a toda la tribu de Manasés, y estos persiguieron a los madianitas. 24 Por toda la región montañosa de Efraín, Gedeón envió mensajeros que decían: «Desciendan contra los madianitas y apodérense antes que ellos de los cruces del Jordán, hasta Bet Bará».
Se convocó entonces a todos los hombres de Efraín y estos se apoderaron de los cruces del Jordán, hasta Bet Bará. 25 También capturaron a Oreb y Zeb, los dos líderes madianitas. A Oreb lo mataron en la roca de Oreb y a Zeb, en el lagar de Zeb. Luego de perseguir a los madianitas, llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeb a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán.

Gideon’s Three Hundred Chosen Men
7 Then (A)Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him got up early, and camped beside [a]the spring of Harod; and the camp of Midian was on the north side of [b]them by the hill of (B)Moreh in the valley.
2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to hand Midian over to them, (C)otherwise Israel would [c]become boastful, saying, ‘My own [d]power has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore come, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘(D)Whoever is afraid and worried, is to return and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand from the people returned, but ten thousand remained.
4 (E)Then the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there. So it shall be that he of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go with you; but everyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. Then the Lord said to Gideon, “You shall put everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps [e]in one group, and everyone who kneels down to drink in another.” 6 Now the number of those who lapped, [f]putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people kneeled down to drink water. 7 And the Lord said to Gideon, “I will save you (F)with the three hundred men who lapped, and will hand the Midianites over to you; so have all the other people go, each man to his [g]home.” 8 So [h]the three hundred men took the people’s provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And [i]Gideon dismissed all the other men of Israel, each to his tent, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
9 Now on the same night it came about that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, (G)for I have handed it over to you. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp, 11 so that you will hear what they say; and (H)afterward [j]you will have the courage to go down against the camp.” So he went down with Purah his servant to the [k]outposts of the army that was in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites, the Amalekites, and all the [l]people of the east were lying in the valley (I)as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, (J)as numerous as the sand on the seashore. 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was relating a dream to his friend. And he said, “Behold, I [m]had a dream; [n]a loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came to the tent and struck it so that it fell, and turned it [o]upside down so that the tent collapsed.” 14 And his friend replied, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has (K)handed over to him Midian and all the camp.”
15 When Gideon heard the account of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. Then he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has handed over to you the camp of Midian!” 16 And he divided the three hundred men into three [p]units, and he put trumpets and empty pitchers into the hands of all of them, with torches inside the pitchers. 17 Then he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise. And behold, when I come to the outskirts of the camp, [q]do as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow the trumpet, then you also blow the trumpets around the entire camp and say, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon!’”
Confusion of the Enemy
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle night watch, when they had just posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and smashed the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 When the three [r]units blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers, they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing, and shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 And each stood in his place around the camp; and (L)all the [s]army ran, crying out as they fled. 22 And when they blew the three hundred trumpets, the (M)Lord set the sword of one against another even throughout the entire [t]army; and the [u]army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the edge of (N)Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were summoned from (O)Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down [v]against Midian and (P)take control of the waters ahead of them, as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they took control of the waters as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan. 25 And they captured the two leaders of Midian, (Q)Oreb and Zeeb, and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and they killed Zeeb at the wine press of Zeeb, while they pursued Midian; and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon (R)from across the Jordan.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)
