Reinado de Abimelec
9 Abimelec hijo de Yerubaal fue a Siquén, donde vivían los hermanos de su madre, y les dijo:
2 «Yo les ruego que pregunten a los habitantes de Siquén si les parece mejor ser gobernados por los setenta hijos de Yerubaal, que ser gobernados por un solo hombre. No se olviden que yo soy de su misma sangre.»
3 Sus tíos maternos preguntaron entonces a los habitantes de Siquén lo que Abimelec les había sugerido, y a ellos les pareció bien la idea de Abimelec, pues dijeron: «Es pariente nuestro.» 4 También le dieron setenta monedas de plata del templo de Baal Berit, y con ese dinero Abimelec contrató unos mercenarios y vagabundos, para que anduvieran con él. 5 Luego se dirigió a Ofrá, a la casa de su padre, y sobre una misma piedra mató a sus setenta hermanos, hijos de Yerubaal.
Pero Yotán, el hermano menor, se escondió y logró escapar. 6 Después de esto, los habitantes de Siquén y de Milo se reunieron cerca de la llanura del pilar de Siquén, y eligieron a Abimelec como su rey, 7 y cuando Yotán lo supo, subió a la cumbre del monte Guerizín, y a grito abierto les dijo:
«Varones de Siquén, escuchen lo que voy a decirles, y pongo a Dios como testigo. 8 Cierta vez, los árboles quisieron elegir un rey que los gobernara, y le dijeron al olivo: “Queremos que seas nuestro rey.” 9 Pero el olivo respondió: “¿Quieren que deje de producir mi aceite, con el que se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para hacerme grande entre los árboles?” 10 Entonces los árboles fueron a hablar con la higuera, y le dijeron: “Ven y reina sobre nosotros.” 11 Pero la higuera les respondió: “¿Y debo abandonar la dulzura de mis frutos, para ir y hacerme grande entre los árboles?” 12 Los árboles siguieron insistiendo, y llamaron a la vid y le dijeron: “Ven tú, entonces, y reina sobre nosotros.” 13 Pero la vid les respondió: “¿Y voy a dejar de producir mi vino, que es la alegría de Dios y de los hombres, sólo para hacerme grande entre los árboles?” 14 Al final, todos los árboles le dijeron a la zarza: “Anímate, y ven a reinar sobre nosotros.” 15 Pero la zarza respondió: “Si en verdad quieren que yo reine sobre ustedes, vengan y busquen refugio bajo mi sombra. Pero si no me obedecen, saldrá fuego de mí y quemará los cedros del Líbano.”
16 »Ahora bien, ¿creen ustedes haber hecho bien al nombrar a Abimelec como rey? ¿Han sido honestos y agradecidos con la familia de Yerubaal, que tanto hizo por ustedes? 17 Mi padre luchó a favor de ustedes, y se jugó la vida para librarlos de los madianitas; 18 ustedes, en cambio, se han puesto en contra de su casa, y han matado a sus setenta hijos varones contra una piedra, sólo para nombrar rey a Abimelec, ese hijo de la criada de mi padre, al que han puesto sobre los habitantes de Siquén, y sólo porque es su pariente. 19 Si creen que hoy han actuado correctamente con Yerubaal y su casa, alégrense con Abimelec, y que él se alegre de ser su rey. 20 Pero si no, que la ira de Abimelec consuma a los de Siquén y a los de Milo; y que la ira de los de Siquén y los de Milo consuma a Abimelec.»
21 Dicho esto, Yotán huyó y se fue a Ber, y allí se quedó a vivir por miedo a su hermano Abimelec.
22 Abimelec se impuso sobre Israel durante tres años, 23 pero Dios hizo que brotara un sentimiento de inconformidad entre Abimelec y los hombres de Siquén, y éstos se pusieron en su contra. 24 Así, Abimelec cargó con la culpa de haber matado a los setenta hijos de Yerubaal, junto con los de Siquén, que lo ayudaron a matarlos. 25 Los habitantes de Siquén tenían hombres en las cumbres de los montes, los cuales asaltaban a todos los que pasaban por el camino. Esto Abimelec llegó a saberlo.
26 Gaal hijo de Ebed fue con sus hermanos a vivir a Siquén, y se ganó la confianza de los jefes de Siquén. 27 Salieron al campo, vendimiaron sus viñedos, pisaron la uva e hicieron fiesta; luego entraron en el templo de sus dioses, y allí comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec. 28 Entonces Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo:
«¿Y quién es Abimelec, y qué tan importante es Siquén, para que seamos sus sirvientes? ¿Acaso no es hijo de Yerubaal? ¿Y acaso no es Zebul su ayudante? Sirvan, si quieren, a los varones de Jamor, el padre de Siquén; pero ¿por qué vamos a servir a Abimelec? 29 ¡Cómo quisiera que este pueblo estuviera bajo mi mando! Si así fuera, yo me lanzaría contra Abimelec y le diría: “¡Reúne a tus ejércitos, y vete de aquí!”»
30 Cuando Zebul, que era el gobernador de la ciudad, oyó lo que dijo Gaal hijo de Ebed, se llenó de ira, 31 y en secreto envió mensajeros a Abimelec, para decirle:
«Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos están en Siquén. Han venido a sublevar a la ciudad contra ti. 32 Aprovecha la noche y, con los hombres que te siguen, prepara emboscadas en el campo. 33 Muy de mañana, al salir el sol, ataca la ciudad; y cuando Gaal y los suyos salgan a pelear contra ti, haz con él lo que creas más conveniente.»
34 Abimelec se preparó durante la noche y, con el pueblo que lo seguía, emboscó a Siquén con cuatro compañías. 35 Cuando Gaal hijo de Ebed salió y se puso a la entrada de la ciudad, Abimelec y su gente salieron de su escondite. 36 Al ver Gaal tanta gente, le dijo a Zebul:
«¡Mira cuánta gente baja de los montes!»
Y Zebul le respondió:
«Tu imaginación te hace ver hombres, pero sólo son las sombras de los montes.»
37 Gaal le volvió a decir:
«Mira toda esa gente que sale como de en medio de la tierra, ¡y por el camino de la encina de los adivinos viene otra tropa!»
38 Pero Zebul le respondió:
«¿Y dónde quedó lo que nos decías, de que Abimelec no era nadie para que fuéramos sus sirvientes? ¿No es ése el pueblo que tanto despreciabas? ¡Sal, pues, y pelea contra él!»
39 Entonces Gaal salió al frente de los hombres de Siquén, y se enfrentó a Abimelec. 40 Pero Abimelec lo persiguió y lo hizo huir, y muchos hombres cayeron heridos de muerte a la entrada de la ciudad. 41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma, mientras Zebul arrojaba de Siquén a Gaal y a sus hermanos.
42 Al día siguiente, Abimelec supo que el pueblo había salido al campo. 43 Entonces tomó a su gente, la repartió en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo; y cuando vio que el pueblo salía de la ciudad, lo atacó con violencia. 44 Lucharon con mucho valor, pero se detuvieron a la entrada de la ciudad, mientras las otras dos compañías arremetían contra los que estaban en el campo, hasta matarlos. 45 Todo ese día Abimelec luchó contra los habitantes de la ciudad, hasta que la tomó y mató a los que aún quedaban; después de eso, asoló la ciudad y la sembró con sal.
46 Cuando los que estaban en la torre de Siquén oyeron esto, corrieron a esconderse en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit. 47 Pero Abimelec sabía dónde estaban, 48 así que con toda su gente se dirigió al monte Salmón y, con un hacha, cortó la rama de un árbol, la levantó y la puso sobre sus hombros, y le pidió a su gente que hiciera lo mismo. 49 Entonces todos cortaron ramas y siguieron a Abimelec, y las pusieron junto a la fortaleza, luego les prendieron fuego, y la fortaleza ardió, y los que estaban en la torre de Siquén, que eran como mil hombres y mujeres, murieron quemados.
50 Después de eso, Abimelec se fue a la ciudad de Tebés, y la sitió y la tomó. 51 En el centro de la ciudad había una torre fortificada, en la que se escondieron los hombres, las mujeres y todos los jefes de la ciudad. Se subieron al techo de la torre, y cerraron las puertas. 52 Abimelec fue y atacó la torre, y al llegar a la puerta quiso prenderle fuego, 53 pero una mujer dejó caer sobre la cabeza de Abimelec parte de una rueda de molino, y lo descalabró. 54 Cuando Abimelec se sintió perdido, llamó a su escudero y le dijo:
«¡Mátame con tu espada! ¡Que no se diga que una mujer me mató!»
Y su escudero le clavó la espada, y murió.
55 Cuando los israelitas vieron que Abimelec estaba muerto, cada uno regresó a su casa. 56 Así castigó Dios a Abimelec por el mal que le hizo a la casa de su padre, al matar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Y Dios castigó también a los habitantes de Siquén por la maldad que cometieron. Así se cumplió la maldición que les lanzó Yotán hijo de Yerubaal.

9 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18 And ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Abimelech’s Conspiracy
9 Then Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to (A)his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, 2 “Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you, that all (B)seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and (C)bone.”
3 And his mother’s brothers spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem; and their heart was inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our (D)brother.” 4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of (E)Baal-Berith, with which Abimelech hired (F)worthless and reckless men; and they followed him. 5 Then he went to his father’s house (G)at Ophrah and (H)killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself. 6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem.
The Parable of the Trees
7 Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of (I)Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them:
“Listen to me, you men of Shechem,
That God may listen to you!
8 “The(J) trees once went forth to anoint a king over them.
And they said to the olive tree,
(K)‘Reign over us!’
9 But the olive tree said to them,
‘Should I cease giving my oil,
(L)With which they honor God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’
10 “Then the trees said to the fig tree,
‘You come and reign over us!’
11 But the fig tree said to them,
‘Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit,
And go to sway over trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine,
‘You come and reign over us!’
13 But the vine said to them,
‘Should I cease my new wine,
(M)Which cheers both God and men,
And go to sway over trees?’
14 “Then all the trees said to the bramble,
‘You come and reign over us!’
15 And the bramble said to the trees,

Downfall of Abimelech
22 After Abimelech had reigned over Israel three years, 23 (Y)God sent a (Z)spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem (AA)dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 (AB)that the crime done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might be settled and their (AC)blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who aided him in the killing of his brothers. 25 And the men of Shechem set [b]men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.
26 Now Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. 27 So they went out into the fields, and gathered grapes from their vineyards and trod them, and [c]made merry. And they went into (AD)the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech. 28 Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, (AE)“Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of (AF)Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? 29 (AG)If only this people were under my [d]authority! Then I would remove Abimelech.” So [e]he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out!”
30 When Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was aroused. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, “Take note! Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and here they are, fortifying the city against you. 32 Now therefore, get up by night, you and the people who are with you, and [f]lie in wait in the field. 33 And it shall be, as soon as the sun is up in the morning, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may then do to them [g]as you find opportunity.”
34 So Abimelech and all the people who were with him rose by night, and [h]lay in wait against Shechem in four companies. 35 When Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance to the city gate, Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from lying in wait. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
But Zebul said to him, “You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men.”
37 So Gaal spoke again and said, “See, people are coming down from the center of the land, and another company is coming from the [i]Diviners’ Terebinth Tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where indeed is your mouth now, with which you (AH)said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out, if you will, and fight with them now.”
39 So Gaal went out, leading the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled from him; and many fell wounded, to the very entrance of the gate. 41 Then Abimelech dwelt at Arumah, and Zebul [j]drove out Gaal and his brothers, so that they would not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came about on the next day that the people went out into the field, and they told Abimelech. 43 So he took his people, divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field. And he looked, and there were the people, coming out of the city; and he rose against them and [k]attacked them. 44 Then Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city; and the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them. 45 So Abimelech fought against the city all that day; (AI)he took the city and killed the people who were in it; and he (AJ)demolished the city and sowed it with salt.
46 Now when all the men of the tower of Shechem had heard that, they entered the [l]stronghold of the temple (AK)of the god Berith. 47 And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 Then Abimelech went up to Mount (AL)Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it and laid it on his shoulder; then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste and do as I have done.” 49 So each of the people likewise cut down his own bough and followed Abimelech, put them against the [m]stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire above them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he [n]encamped against Thebez and took it. 51 But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women—all the people of the city—fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower. 52 So Abimelech came as far as the tower and fought against it; and he drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 But a certain woman (AM)dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. 54 Then (AN)he called quickly to the young man, his armorbearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ ” So his young man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed, every man to his [o]place.
56 (AO)Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem God returned on their own heads, and on them came (AP)the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Abimélec
9 Abimélec, hijo de Yerubaal, fue a Siquén a ver a los hermanos de su madre. Entonces dijo a ellos y a todo el clan de su madre: 2 «Pregúntenles a todos los habitantes de Siquén: “¿Qué les conviene más: que todos los setenta hijos de Yerubaal los gobiernen o que los gobierne un solo hombre?”. Acuérdense de que yo soy de la misma carne y sangre que ustedes».
3 Cuando los hermanos de su madre comunicaron todo esto a los habitantes de Siquén, estos se inclinaron a favor de Abimélec, porque dijeron: «Él es nuestro hermano». 4 Y le dieron setenta siclos[a] de plata del templo de Baal Berit, con lo cual Abimélec contrató a unos maleantes sin escrúpulos para que lo siguieran. 5 Fue a Ofra, a la casa de su padre, y sobre una misma piedra asesinó a sus setenta hermanos, hijos de Yerubaal. Pero Jotán, el hijo menor de Yerubaal, se escondió y logró escaparse. 6 Todos los habitantes de Siquén y Bet Miló se reunieron junto al gran árbol y la piedra sagrada que están en Siquén, para coronar como rey a Abimélec.
7 Cuando Jotán se enteró, subió a la cima del monte Guerizín y les gritó bien fuerte: «¡Escúchenme, habitantes de Siquén, para que Dios los escuche a ustedes! 8 Un día los árboles salieron a ungir un rey para sí mismos. Y dijeron al olivo: “Reina sobre nosotros”.
9 »Pero el olivo respondió: “¿He de renunciar a dar mi aceite, con el cual se honra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”.
10 »Después los árboles dijeron a la higuera: “Reina sobre nosotros”.
11 »Pero la higuera respondió: “¿He de renunciar a mi fruto, tan bueno y dulce, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”.
12 »Luego los árboles dijeron a la vid: “Reina sobre nosotros”.
13 »Pero la vid les respondió: “¿He de renunciar a mi vino, que alegra a los dioses y a los hombres, para ir a mecerme sobre los árboles?”.
14 »Por último, todos los árboles dijeron al espino: “Reina sobre nosotros”.
15 »Pero el espino respondió a los árboles: “Si de veras quieren ungirme como su rey, vengan y refúgiense bajo mi sombra; pero, si no, ¡que salga fuego del espino, y consuma los cedros del Líbano!”.
16 »Ahora bien, ¿han actuado ustedes con honradez y sinceridad al coronar rey a Abimélec? ¿Han sido justos con Yerubaal y su familia, y lo han tratado como se merecía? 17 Mi padre luchó por ustedes y arriesgando su vida los libró del poder de los madianitas. 18 Pero hoy ustedes se han rebelado contra la familia de mi padre; han matado a sus setenta hijos sobre una misma piedra, y han hecho de Abimélec, hijo de su esclava, el rey de los habitantes de Siquén solo porque él es pariente de ustedes. 19 Si hoy han actuado con honradez y sinceridad hacia Yerubaal y su familia, ¡que sean felices con Abimélec y que también él lo sea con ustedes! 20 Y si no, habitantes de Siquén y Bet Miló, ¡que salga fuego de Abimélec y los consuma a ustedes y que salga fuego de ustedes y consuma a Abimélec!».
21 Luego Jotán escapó, huyendo hasta Ber. Allí se quedó a vivir porque le tenía miedo a su hermano Abimélec.
22 Abimélec había ya gobernado a Israel tres años 23 cuando Dios interpuso un espíritu maligno entre Abimélec y los habitantes de Siquén, quienes lo traicionaron. 24 Esto sucedió a fin de que la violencia contra los setenta hijos de Yerubaal y el derramamiento de su sangre recayera sobre su hermano Abimélec, que los había matado, y sobre los habitantes de Siquén, que habían sido sus cómplices en ese crimen. 25 Los habitantes de Siquén tendían emboscadas en las cumbres de las colinas y asaltaban a todos los que pasaban por allí. Pero Abimélec se enteró de todo esto.
26 Aconteció que Gaal, hijo de Ébed, llegó a Siquén, junto con sus hermanos, y los habitantes de aquella ciudad confiaron en él. 27 Después de haber salido a los campos y recogido y pisado las uvas, celebraron un festival en el templo de su dios. Mientras comían y bebían, maldijeron a Abimélec. 28 Gaal, hijo de Ébed, dijo: «¿Quién es Abimélec y por qué nosotros los siquenitas debemos someternos a él? ¿No es acaso el hijo de Yerubaal y no es Zebul su delegado? ¡Que sirvan a los hombres de Jamor, el padre de Siquén! ¿Por qué habremos de servir a Abimélec? 29 ¡Si este pueblo estuviera bajo mis órdenes, yo echaría a Abimélec! Le diría:[b] “¡Reúne a todo tu ejército y sal a pelear!”».
30 Zebul, el gobernador de la ciudad, se enfureció cuando oyó lo que decía Gaal, hijo de Ébed. 31 Entonces envió en secreto mensajeros a Abimélec, diciéndole: «Gaal, hijo de Ébed, y sus hermanos han llegado a Siquén y están instigando a la ciudad contra ti. 32 Ahora bien, levántense tú y tus hombres durante la noche y pónganse al acecho en los campos. 33 Por la mañana, a la salida del sol, lánzate contra la ciudad. Cuando Gaal y sus hombres salgan contra ti, haz lo que más te convenga».
34 Así que Abimélec y todo su ejército se levantaron de noche y se pusieron al acecho cerca de Siquén, divididos en cuatro compañías. 35 Gaal, hijo de Ébed, había salido y estaba de pie a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, precisamente cuando Abimélec y sus soldados salían de donde estaban al acecho. 36 Cuando Gaal los vio, dijo a Zebul:
—¡Mira, viene bajando gente desde las cumbres de las colinas!
—Confundes con gente las sombras de las colinas —respondió Zebul.
37 Pero Gaal insistió, diciendo:
—Mira, viene bajando gente por la colina central, y otra compañía viene por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos.
38 Entonces Zebul dijo:
—Tú decías: “¿Quién es Abimélec para que nos sometamos a él?”. Pues bien, ¿dónde están ahora tus fanfarronerías? ¿No son esos los hombres que tú despreciabas? ¡Sal y lucha contra ellos!
39 Gaal salió al frente de los habitantes de Siquén y peleó contra Abimélec; 40 pero este los persiguió y, en la huida, muchos cayeron muertos por todo el camino, hasta la entrada de la puerta. 41 Abimélec se quedó en Arumá, y Zebul expulsó de Siquén a Gaal y a sus hermanos.
42 Al día siguiente, el pueblo de Siquén salió a los campos y fueron a contárselo a Abimélec. 43 Entonces Abimélec tomó a sus hombres, los dividió en tres compañías y se puso al acecho en los campos. Cuando vio que el ejército salía de la ciudad, se levantó para atacarlo. 44 Abimélec y las compañías que estaban con él se apresuraron a ocupar posiciones a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad. Luego dos de las compañías arremetieron contra los que estaban en los campos y los derrotaron. 45 Abimélec combatió contra la ciudad durante todo aquel día, hasta que la conquistó matando a sus habitantes; arrasó la ciudad y esparció sal sobre ella.
46 Al saber esto, los señores que ocupaban la torre de Siquén entraron en la fortaleza del templo de El Berit. 47 Cuando Abimélec se enteró de que ellos se habían reunido allí, 48 él y todos sus hombres subieron al monte Zalmón. Tomó un hacha, cortó algunas ramas y se las puso sobre los hombros. A los hombres que estaban con él les ordenó: «¡Rápido! ¡Hagan lo mismo que me han visto hacer!». 49 Todos los hombres cortaron ramas y siguieron a Abimélec hasta la fortaleza, donde amontonaron las ramas y les prendieron fuego. Así murió toda la gente que estaba dentro de la torre de Siquén, que eran como mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Después Abimélec fue a Tebes, la sitió y la capturó. 51 Dentro de la ciudad había una torre fuerte, a la cual huyeron todos sus habitantes, hombres y mujeres. Se encerraron en la torre y subieron al techo. 52 Abimélec se dirigió a la torre y la atacó. Pero cuando se acercaba a la entrada para prenderle fuego, 53 una mujer arrojó sobre la cabeza de él una piedra de moler y le partió el cráneo.
54 De inmediato llamó Abimélec a su escudero y ordenó: «Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: “¡Lo mató una mujer!”». Entonces su escudero clavó la espada y así murió. 55 Cuando los israelitas vieron que Abimélec estaba muerto, regresaron a sus casas.
56 Fue así como Dios castigó a Abimélec por el crimen que había cometido contra su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Además, Dios hizo que los hombres de Siquén pagaran por toda su maldad. Así cayó sobre ellos la maldición de Jotán, hijo de Yerubaal.
