Abimelec gobierna sobre Siquem

9 Un día Abimelec, hijo de Gedeón,[a] fue a Siquem para visitar a sus tíos, los hermanos de su madre. Les dijo a ellos y al resto de su familia materna: 2 «Pregúntenles a los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem si prefieren ser gobernados por los setenta hijos de Gedeón o por un solo hombre. ¡Y recuerden que soy de la misma sangre que ustedes!».

3 Entonces los tíos de Abimelec transmitieron ese mensaje a los ciudadanos de Siquem. Y después de escuchar la propuesta, el pueblo de Siquem decidió por Abimelec, porque era pariente de ellos. 4 Le dieron setenta monedas de plata del templo de Baal-berit, las cuales él usó para contratar a unos hombres alborotadores e imprudentes que aceptaron seguirlo. 5 Fue a la casa de su padre en Ofra y allí, sobre una misma piedra, mató a sus setenta medios hermanos, los hijos de Gedeón. Pero Jotam, el hermano menor, escapó y se escondió.

6 Entonces todos los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem y de Bet-milo convocaron una reunión bajo el roble que está junto a la columna[b] de Siquem y proclamaron rey a Abimelec.

Parábola de Jotam

7 Cuando Jotam se enteró, subió a la cima del monte Gerizim y gritó:

«¡Escúchenme, ciudadanos de Siquem!
    ¡Escúchenme a mí si quieren que Dios los escuche a ustedes!
8 Cierta vez los árboles decidieron elegir un rey.
    Primero le dijeron al olivo:
    “¡Reina sobre nosotros!”.
9 Pero el olivo se negó diciendo:
“¿Dejaría yo de producir el aceite de oliva
    que bendice a Dios y a la gente,
    solo para mecerme por encima de los árboles?”.

10 »Entonces le dijeron a la higuera:
    “¡Reina sobre nosotros!”.
11 Pero la higuera también se negó diciendo:
“¿Dejaría yo de producir mi dulce fruto,
    solo para mecerme por encima de los árboles?”.

12 »Entonces le dijeron a la vid:
    “¡Reina sobre nosotros!”.
13 Pero la vid también se negó diciendo:
“¿Dejaría yo de producir el vino
    que alegra a Dios y a la gente,
    solo para mecerme por encima de los árboles?”.

14 »Finalmente todos los árboles le dijeron al espino:
    “¡Reina sobre nosotros!”.
15 Y el espino les respondió a los árboles:
“Si realmente quieren que yo sea su rey,
    vengan a refugiarse bajo mi sombra.
Si no, que salga fuego de mí
    y consuma los cedros del Líbano”».

16 Jotam continuó: «Ahora asegúrense de haber actuado honorablemente y de buena fe al elegir como rey a Abimelec, y de haberse portado bien con Gedeón y todos sus descendientes. ¿Lo trataron con la honra que se merece por todo lo que realizó? 17 Pues él luchó por ustedes y arriesgó su vida cuando los rescató de los madianitas. 18 Pero hoy ustedes se rebelaron contra mi padre y sus descendientes al matar a sus setenta hijos sobre una misma piedra. Y escogieron a Abimelec, hijo de su esclava, para que sea rey de ustedes, solo porque es su pariente.

19 »Si hoy han actuado honorablemente y de buena fe hacia Gedeón y sus descendientes, entonces que tengan alegría con Abimelec y que él tenga alegría con ustedes. 20 Pero si no han actuado de buena fe, ¡que salga fuego de Abimelec y consuma a los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem y de Bet-milo, y que salga fuego de los ciudadanos de Siquem y de Bet-milo y consuma a Abimelec!».

21 Entonces Jotam huyó y se fue a vivir a Beer, porque le tenía miedo a su hermano Abimelec.

Siquem se rebela contra Abimelec

22 Tres años después de que Abimelec comenzó a gobernar a Israel, 23 Dios envió un espíritu que generó conflictos entre Abimelec y los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem, quienes finalmente se rebelaron. 24 Dios estaba castigando a Abimelec por haber asesinado a los setenta hijos de Gedeón, y a los ciudadanos de Siquem por apoyarlo en esa traición de asesinar a sus hermanos. 25 Los ciudadanos de Siquem le tendieron una emboscada a Abimelec en las cumbres de las colinas y robaban a todo el que pasara por allí. Pero alguien alertó a Abimelec acerca de la conspiración.

26 Un día Gaal, hijo de Ebed, se mudó a Siquem con sus hermanos y se ganó la confianza de los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem. 27 Durante el festival anual de la cosecha en Siquem, celebrado en el templo del dios local, hubo vino en abundancia, y todos comenzaron a maldecir a Abimelec. 28 «¿Quién es ese Abimelec?—gritó Gaal—. No es un hijo legítimo de Siquem.[c] Entonces, ¿por qué debemos ser sus siervos? Él no es más que un hijo de Gedeón, y ese Zebul solo es su ayudante. Sirvan a los verdaderos hijos de Hamor, el fundador de Siquem. ¿Por qué tenemos que servir a Abimelec? 29 Si yo fuera el encargado aquí, me desharía de Abimelec. Le diría:[d] “¡Búscate unos soldados y sal a pelear!”».

30 Pero cuando Zebul, el jefe de la ciudad, oyó lo que Gaal decía, se puso furioso. 31 Le envió mensajeros a Abimelec, quien estaba en Aruma,[e] para decirle: «Gaal, hijo de Ebed, y sus hermanos se han mudado a Siquem, y ahora están incitando a la ciudad a rebelarse contra ti. 32 Ven con un ejército esta noche y escóndete en los campos. 33 Por la mañana, a la salida del sol, ataca la ciudad. Cuando Gaal y los que lo acompañan salgan contra ti, podrás hacer con ellos lo que quieras».

34 Entonces Abimelec y todos sus hombres fueron de noche, se dividieron en cuatro grupos y se posicionaron alrededor de Siquem. 35 Gaal estaba parado junto a las puertas de la ciudad cuando Abimelec y su ejército salieron de su escondite. 36 Al verlos, Gaal le dijo a Zebul:

—¡Mira, hay gente bajando de las cumbres!

—Parecen hombres, pero son nada más sombras reflejadas en las colinas—contestó Zebul.

37 Pero Gaal insistió:

—¡No! Hay gente bajando de las colinas.[f] Y otro grupo viene por el camino que pasa por el Roble de los Adivinos.[g]

38 Entonces Zebul se volvió contra él y preguntó:

—¿Y qué pasó con esa boca grande tuya que presume tanto? Acaso no fuiste tú el que dijo: “¿Quién es ese Abimelec y por qué debemos ser sus siervos?”. ¡Te burlaste de esos hombres, y ahora están en las afueras de la ciudad! ¡Sal a pelear contra ellos!

39 Entonces Gaal marchó al frente de los ciudadanos prominentes de Siquem a la batalla contra Abimelec. 40 Pero Abimelec lo persiguió, y muchos de los hombres de Siquem cayeron heridos por el camino cuando se retiraban hacia la entrada de la ciudad. 41 Entonces Abimelec regresó a Aruma, y Zebul expulsó de Siquem a Gaal y a sus hermanos.

42 Al día siguiente, la gente de Siquem salió a los campos para pelear. Cuando Abimelec se enteró, 43 dividió a sus hombres en tres grupos y tendió una emboscada en los campos. Cuando vio que algunos hombres salían de la ciudad, él y su grupo saltaron de su escondite y los atacaron. 44 Abimelec y sus hombres tomaron por asalto la puerta de la ciudad para impedir que los de Siquem volvieran a entrar, mientras los otros dos grupos de Abimelec mataban a la gente en los campos. 45 La batalla duró todo el día, hasta que finalmente Abimelec tomó la ciudad. Entonces mató a los habitantes, redujo la ciudad a escombros y esparció sal por todo el suelo.

46 Cuando los ciudadanos prominentes que vivían en la torre de Siquem se enteraron de lo sucedido, corrieron a esconderse en el templo de Baal-berit.[h] 47 Alguien le informó a Abimelec que los ciudadanos se habían juntado en el templo, 48 entonces él llevó a sus tropas al monte Salmón. Tomó un hacha, cortó ramas de un árbol y se las puso al hombro. «¡Rápido, hagan lo mismo que hice yo!», dijo a sus hombres. 49 Entonces, siguiendo el ejemplo de Abimelec, cada uno de ellos cortó ramas. Amontonaron las ramas contra las paredes del templo y les prendieron fuego. Así murieron todos los que vivían en la torre de Siquem, unas mil personas, tanto hombres como mujeres.

50 Luego Abimelec atacó la ciudad de Tebes y la tomó. 51 Pero había una torre fuerte dentro de la ciudad, y todos los habitantes, hombres y mujeres, corrieron a refugiarse allí. Se atrincheraron en su interior y subieron al techo de la torre. 52 Entonces Abimelec los siguió para atacar la torre; pero cuando se preparaba para prenderle fuego a la entrada, 53 desde el techo, una mujer tiró una piedra de molino, que cayó sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le partió el cráneo.

54 Enseguida él le dijo a su joven escudero: «¡Saca tu espada y mátame! ¡Que no se diga que una mujer mató a Abimelec!». Así que el joven lo atravesó con su espada, y él murió. 55 Cuando los hombres de Abimelec lo vieron muerto, se desbandaron y regresaron a sus casas.

56 De esa forma, Dios castigó a Abimelec por el mal que había hecho contra su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Dios también castigó a los hombres de Siquem por toda su maldad. Así se cumplió la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Gedeón.

Abimélec

9 Abimélec, hijo de Jerubaal, fue a Siquem para hablar con sus parientes por parte de madre. Y les dijo:

2 —En nombre de nuestro parentesco, les ruego que convenzan a la gente de Siquem de que es mejor que los gobierne un solo hombre, y no todos los setenta hijos de Jerubaal.

3 Y como Abimélec era pariente de ellos, se pusieron de parte suya y fueron a convencer a los de Siquem para que lo siguieran. 4 Además, tomaron setenta monedas de plata del templo de Baal-berit y se las dieron a Abimélec. Con ese dinero, Abimélec alquiló unos matones para que lo siguieran. Aquellos hombres fueron con él 5 a Ofrá, donde había vivido su padre Jerubaal, y contra una misma piedra mataron a los setenta hermanos de Abimélec. Sólo pudo esconderse y salvarse Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerubaal. 6 Después todos los de Siquem y de Bet-miló se reunieron junto a la encina y la piedra sagrada que había en Siquem, y nombraron rey a Abimélec.

7 Cuando Jotam lo supo, subió al monte Guerizim, y desde allí gritó bien fuerte, para que todos le oyeran:

«¡Óiganme bien, hombres de Siquem! ¡Y así Dios los oiga a ustedes!

8 »En cierta ocasión los árboles quisieron tener rey, y le pidieron al olivo que fuera su rey. 9 Pero el olivo les dijo que no, pues para ser rey de los árboles tendría que dejar de dar aceite, el cual sirve para honrar tanto a los hombres como a Dios.

10 »Entonces los árboles le pidieron a la higuera que fuera su rey. 11 Pero la higuera les dijo que no, pues para ser rey de los árboles tendría que dejar de dar sus dulces y sabrosos higos.

12 »Entonces los árboles le pidieron a la vid que fuera su rey. 13 Pero la vid les dijo que no, pues para ser rey de los árboles tendría que dejar de dar su vino, el cual sirve para alegrar tanto a los hombres como a Dios.

14 »Por fin, los árboles le pidieron a un espino que fuera su rey. 15 Y el espino les dijo que, si de veras querían que él fuera su rey, todos tendrían que ponerse bajo su sombra; pero si no querían que él fuera su rey, saldría de él un fuego que destruiría los cedros del Líbano.

16 »Y ahora, yo les pregunto: ¿Han actuado ustedes con verdad y honradez al hacer rey a Abimélec? ¿Han tratado a Jerubaal y a su familia con la misma bondad con que él los trató a ustedes? 17 Porque mi padre arriesgó su vida por ustedes cuando peleó para librarlos del poder de los madianitas; 18 ustedes, en cambio, se han rebelado contra la familia de mi padre, y han matado a sus setenta hijos contra una misma piedra. Por si fuera poco, han nombrado rey a Abimélec, hijo de la concubina de Jerubaal, sólo porque él es pariente de ustedes. 19 Pero yo les digo hoy: Si ustedes han tratado con verdad y honradez a Jerubaal y a su familia, que les vaya bien con Abimélec, y a él con ustedes; 20 pero si no, ¡que salga de Abimélec un fuego que destruya a todos los de Siquem y de Bet-miló, y que de Siquem y de Bet-miló salga un fuego que lo destruya a él!»

21 Después de haber dicho esto, Jotam huyó y se fue a vivir en Beer, porque le tenía miedo a su hermano Abimélec.

22 Abimélec dominó a los israelitas durante tres años, 23 pero Dios interpuso un espíritu maligno entre Abimélec y los de Siquem, para que éstos se rebelaran contra él 24 y así pagara Abimélec el sangriento asesinato de los setenta hijos de Jerubaal, y los de Siquem pagaran por haberle ayudado. 25 Los de Siquem tenían gente en los montes, que se escondía y asaltaba a todos los que pasaban por el camino cercano. Y Abimélec se enteró de esto.

26 Un día, Gáal, el hijo de Ébed, pasó con sus hermanos por Siquem y se ganó la confianza de los de aquella ciudad, 27 los cuales salieron al campo a recoger la uva e hicieron vino y celebraron una gran fiesta, comiendo y bebiendo en el templo de sus dioses y maldiciendo a Abimélec. 28 Y Gáal decía: «¿Quién se cree este Abimélec? No es más que un hijo de Jerubaal, y Zebul es su ayudante. Y nosotros, los de Siquem, ¿quiénes somos para andar como esclavos delante de ellos? Seamos esclavos de Hamor, el fundador de Siquem, pero no de Abimélec. 29 ¡Ah! ¡Si yo fuera el jefe de ustedes, en seguida me desharía de Abimélec!» Además dijo: «¡Anda, Abimélec, reúne tu ejército y ven a pelear!»

30 Cuando Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, se enteró de lo que andaba diciendo Gáal, se puso furioso 31 y le envió el siguiente mensaje a Abimélec, que estaba en Arumá: «Gáal, el hijo de Ébed, ha venido con sus hermanos a Siquem, y están predisponiendo a la gente de la ciudad contra ti. 32 Por lo tanto, sal de noche con tus soldados y escóndanse en el campo. 33 Por la mañana, al salir el sol, ataca la ciudad, y cuando Gáal y su gente salgan a pelear contigo, haz con él lo que creas más conveniente.»

34 Así pues, Abimélec y toda su gente salieron de noche y se escondieron alrededor de Siquem, repartidos en cuatro grupos. 35 Cuando Gáal salió a la puerta de la ciudad, Abimélec y su gente salieron de sus escondites. 36 Al verlos, Gáal le dijo a Zebul:

—¡Mira, de los cerros viene bajando un ejército!

—No —le contestó Zebul—. Sólo son las sombras de los cerros, que a ti te parecen gente.

37 Pero Gáal siguió diciendo:

—¡También de la colina que llaman “Ombligo de la tierra” viene bajando un ejército! ¡Y otro grupo viene por el camino de la Encina de los Adivinos!

38 —¡Habla ahora, fanfarrón! —le dijo Zebul—. ¡Tú, que decías que Abimélec no era nadie para que fuéramos sus esclavos! Ahí está el ejército que te parecía poca cosa. ¡Anda, sal ahora a pelear contra ellos!

39 Gáal salió al frente de la gente de Siquem a pelear contra Abimélec. 40 Pero Abimélec lo persiguió, y Gáal huyó de él. Hasta en la puerta misma de la ciudad hubo muchos muertos. 41 Abimélec se quedó en Arumá, y Zebul arrojó de Siquem a Gáal y sus hermanos.

42 Al día siguiente, los de Siquem salieron al campo. Cuando Abimélec lo supo, 43 dividió su ejército en tres grupos y se escondió en el campo; y cuando vio que los de Siquem salían de la ciudad, salió de su escondite y los atacó. 44 Él y su grupo se lanzaron a tomar la puerta de la ciudad, mientras los otros dos grupos atacaban y mataban a los que andaban por el campo; 45 y el resto del día lo pasó Abimélec atacando a Siquem, hasta que la tomó. Entonces destruyó la ciudad y mató a todos sus habitantes, y la ciudad misma la sembró de sal.

46 Cuando los de Migdal-siquem se enteraron de lo que había hecho Abimélec, fueron a refugiarse en la fortaleza del templo de El-berit. 47 Y al saber Abimélec que todos estaban reunidos allí, 48 fue con toda su gente al monte Salmón y con un hacha cortó una rama de un árbol; luego se la puso sobre el hombro y dijo a todos sus hombres que hicieran rápidamente lo mismo que él. 49 Todos cortaron sus ramas y siguieron a Abimélec hasta la fortaleza del templo, donde amontonaron todas las ramas y les prendieron fuego, matando así a todos los de Migdal-siquem, que eran unos mil hombres y mujeres.

50 Después Abimélec marchó sobre Tebés, se preparó para atacarla y la tomó. 51 En el centro de aquella ciudad había una torre, y en ella se escondieron todos los habitantes de la ciudad, hombres y mujeres. Cerraron bien las puertas y subieron al techo; 52 pero Abimélec llegó hasta la puerta de la torre y la atacó. Ya se disponía a prenderle fuego, 53 cuando una mujer arrojó una piedra de molino, la cual le cayó en la cabeza y le rompió el cráneo. 54 Abimélec llamó rápidamente a su ayudante de armas y le dijo: «Saca tu espada y mátame, porque no quiero que se diga que una mujer me mató.» Entonces su ayudante lo atravesó con la espada, y así murió. 55 Cuando los israelitas vieron que Abimélec había muerto, regresaron a sus casas.

56 De esta manera Dios hizo pagar a Abimélec el crimen que había cometido contra su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Y Dios hizo también que los de Siquem pagaran por todos sus crímenes. Así se cumplió en ellos la maldición de Jotam, el hijo de Jerubaal.

Abimelech Kills His Brothers

9 And (A)Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s [a]relatives and spoke to them and to the whole family of the household of his mother’s father, saying, 2 “Speak, now, in the hearing of all the lords of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that (B)seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?’ Also, remember that I am (C)your bone and your flesh.” 3 And his mother’s [b]relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the lords of Shechem; and [c]they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is (D)our [d]relative.” 4 So they gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of (E)Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, and they followed him. 5 Then he came to his father’s house at Ophrah and (F)killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, (G)seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. 6 Then all the lords of Shechem and all [e]Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the [f]oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.

7 Then they told Jotham, so he went and stood on the top of (H)Mount Gerizim and lifted his voice and called out. Thus he said to them, “Listen to me, O lords of Shechem, that God may listen to you. 8 The trees surely went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us!’ 9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my fatness, with [g]which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’ 10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good produce and go to wave over the trees?’ 12 Then the trees said to the vine, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my new wine, which makes God and men glad, and go to wave over the trees?’ 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come, reign over us!’ 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in [h]truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

16 “So now, if you have dealt in [i]truth and integrity and made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with (I)Jerubbaal and his house and [j]have dealt with him according to the bountiful works of his hands— 17 for my father fought for you and [k]risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian; 18 but you have risen against my father’s house today and have killed (J)his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, (K)the son of his maidservant, king over the lords of Shechem, because he is your [l]relative— 19 if then you have dealt in [m]truth and integrity with Jerubbaal and his house this day, be glad in Abimelech, and let him also be glad in you. 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the lords of Shechem and [n]Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the lords of Shechem and from [o]Beth-millo and consume Abimelech.” 21 Then Jotham escaped and fled and went to Beer and remained there because of Abimelech his brother.

Zebul Deceives Abimelech

22 And Abimelech governed over Israel three years. 23 (L)Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the lords of Shechem; and the lords of Shechem (M)dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 (N)so that the violence [p]done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and (O)their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the lords of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. 25 And the lords of Shechem set [q]men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who might pass by them along the road; and it was told to Abimelech.

26 Then Gaal the son of Ebed came with his [r]relatives, and they crossed over into Shechem; and the lords of Shechem put their trust in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes of their vineyards and trod them and celebrated a [s]festival; and they came into the house of (P)their god and ate and drank and cursed Abimelech. 28 Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is Zebul not his [t]officer? Serve the men of (Q)Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? 29 [u](R)Would, therefore, that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” And he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out.”

30 Then Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, and his anger burned. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech [v]deceitfully, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his [w]relatives have come to Shechem; and behold, they are [x]stirring up the city against you. 32 So now, arise by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field. 33 And it will be in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and behold, he and the people who are with him will come out against you, and you shall (S)do to them [y]whatever your hand finds pleasing.”

34 So Abimelech and all the people who were with him arose by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four [z]companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the city gate; and Abimelech and the people who were with him arose from the ambush. 36 Then Gaal saw the people and said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” But Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.” 37 Yet Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down from (T)the [aa]highest part of the land, and one [ab]company comes by the way of [ac]the soothsayers’ [ad]oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your [ae]boasting now with which you said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Is this not the people whom you rejected? Go out now and fight with them!” 39 So Gaal went out before the lords of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech pursued him, and he fled before him; and many fell slain up to the entrance of the gate. 41 Then Abimelech remained at Arumah, but Zebul drove out Gaal and his [af]relatives so that they could not remain in Shechem.

42 Now it happened the next day, that the people went out to the field, and it was told to Abimelech. 43 So he took [ag]his people and divided them into three [ah]companies and lay in wait in the field; then he looked, and behold, the people were coming out from the city. So he arose against them and struck them down. 44 Then Abimelech and the [ai]company who was with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the city gate; but the other two [aj]companies rushed upon all who were in the field and struck them down. 45 So Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people who were in it; then he (U)tore the city down and sowed it with salt.

46 Then all the lords of the tower of Shechem heard of it, and they entered the inner chamber of the [ak]temple of (V)El-berith. 47 And it was told to Abimelech that all the lords of the tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 So Abimelech went up to Mount (W)Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took [al]an axe in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do [am]likewise.” 49 And all the people also cut down each one his branch and followed Abimelech and put them on the inner chamber and set the inner chamber on fire over those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about one thousand men and women.

50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the lords of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower. 52 So Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 But (X)a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and she smashed his skull. 54 Then (Y)he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and put me to death, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So [an]the young man pierced him through, and he died. 55 Then the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, so each went away to his [ao]home. 56 Thus (Z)God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 God also returned all the evil of the men of Shechem on their own heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came [ap]upon them.

Abimelek

9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”

3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.

7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’

9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’

10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’

11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’

12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’

13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’

14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’

15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)

16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”

21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.

22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.

26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)

30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”

34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)

36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”

Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”

37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”

38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”

39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.

42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.

46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.

50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)

54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.

56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.
