D. Il regno di Abimèlech
9 Ora Abimèlech, figlio di Ierub-Baal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e disse loro e a tutta la parentela di sua madre: 2 «Dite agli orecchi di tutti i signori di Sichem: E' meglio per voi che vi governino settanta uomini, tutti i figli di Ierub-Baal, o che vi governi un solo uomo? Ricordatevi che io sono del vostro sangue». 3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono di lui, ripetendo a tutti i signori di Sichem quelle parole e il cuor loro si piegò a favore di Abimèlech, perché dicevano: «E' nostro fratello». 4 Gli diedero settanta sicli d'argento che tolsero dal tempio di Baal-Berit; con essi Abimèlech assoldò uomini sfaccendati e audaci che lo seguirono. 5 Venne alla casa di suo padre, a Ofra, e uccise sopra una stessa pietra i suoi fratelli, figli di Ierub-Baal, settanta uomini. Ma Iotam, figlio minore di Ierub-Baal, scampò, perché si era nascosto. 6 Tutti i signori di Sichem e tutta Bet-Millo si radunarono e andarono a proclamare re Abimèlech presso la Quercia della Stele che si trova a Sichem.
Apologo di Iotam
7 Ma Iotam, informato della cosa, andò a porsi sulla sommità del monte Garizim e, alzando la voce, gridò: «Ascoltatemi, signori di Sichem, e Dio ascolterà voi!
8 Si misero in cammino gli alberi
per ungere un re su di essi.
Dissero all'ulivo:
Regna su di noi.
9 Rispose loro l'ulivo:
Rinuncerò al mio olio,
grazie al quale
si onorano dei e uomini,
e andrò ad agitarmi sugli alberi?
10 Dissero gli alberi al fico:
Vieni tu, regna su di noi.
11 Rispose loro il fico:
Rinuncerò alla mia dolcezza
e al mio frutto squisito,
e andrò ad agitarmi sugli alberi?
12 Dissero gli alberi alla vite:
Vieni tu, regna su di noi.
13 Rispose loro la vite:
Rinuncerò al mio mosto
che allieta dei e uomini,
e andrò ad agitarmi sugli alberi?
14 Dissero tutti gli alberi al rovo:
Vieni tu, regna su di noi.
15 Rispose il rovo agli alberi:
Se in verità ungete
me re su di voi,
venite, rifugiatevi alla mia ombra;
se no, esca un fuoco dal rovo
e divori i cedri del Libano.
16 Ora voi non avete agito con lealtà e onestà proclamando re Abimèlech, non avete operato bene verso Ierub-Baal e la sua casa, non lo avete trattato secondo il merito delle sue azioni... 17 Perché mio padre ha combattuto per voi, ha esposto al pericolo la vita e vi ha liberati dalle mani di Madian. 18 Voi invece oggi siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, avete ucciso i suoi figli, settanta uomini, sopra una stessa pietra e avete proclamato re dei signori di Sichem Abimèlech, figlio della sua schiava, perché è vostro fratello. 19 Se dunque avete operato oggi con sincerità e con integrità verso Ierub-Baal e la sua casa, godetevi Abimèlech ed egli si goda voi! 20 Ma se non è così, esca da Abimèlech un fuoco che divori i signori di Sichem e Bet-Millo; esca dai signori di Sichem e da Bet-Millo un fuoco che divori Abimèlech!». 21 Iotam corse via, si mise in salvo e andò a stabilirsi a Beer, lontano da Abimèlech suo fratello.
Rivolta dei Sichemiti contro Abimelèch
22 Abimèlech dominò su Israele tre anni. 23 Poi Dio mandò un cattivo spirito fra Abimèlech e i signori di Sichem e i signori di Sichem si ribellarono ad Abimèlech. 24 Questo avvenne perché la violenza fatta ai settanta figli di Ierub-Baal ricevesse il castigo e il loro sangue ricadesse su Abimèlech loro fratello, che li aveva uccisi, e sui signori di Sichem, che gli avevano dato mano per uccidere i suoi fratelli. 25 I signori di Sichem posero agguati contro di lui sulla cima dei monti, rapinando chiunque passasse vicino alla strada. Abimèlech fu informato della cosa. 26 Poi Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli vennero e si stabilirono a Sichem e i signori di Sichem riposero la fiducia in lui. 27 Usciti nella campagna, vendemmiarono le loro vigne, pigiarono l'uva e fecero festa. Poi entrarono nella casa del loro Dio, mangiarono, bevvero e maledissero Abimèlech. 28 Gaal, figlio di Ebed, disse: «Chi è Abimèlech e che è Sichem, perché dobbiamo servirlo? Non dovrebbero piuttosto il figlio di Ierub-Baal e Zebul, suo luogotenente, servire gli uomini di Camor, capostipite di Sichem? Perché dovremmo servirlo noi? 29 Se avessi in mano questo popolo, io scaccerei Abimèlech e direi: Accresci pure il tuo esercito ed esci in campo».
30 Ora Zebul, governatore della città, udite le parole di Gaal, figlio di Ebed, si accese d'ira 31 e mandò messaggeri ad Abimèlech in Aruma per dirgli: «Ecco Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli sono venuti a Sichem e sollevano la città contro di te. 32 Alzati dunque di notte con la gente che hai con te e tendi un agguato nella campagna. 33 Domattina, non appena spunterà il sole, ti alzerai e piomberai sulla città mentre lui con la sua gente ti uscirà contro: tu gli farai quel che troverai opportuno». 34 Abimèlech e tutta la gente che era con lui si alzarono di notte e tesero un agguato contro Sichem, divisi in quattro schiere. 35 Gaal, figlio di Ebed, uscì e si fermò all'ingresso della porta della città; allora Abimèlech uscì dall'agguato con la gente che aveva. 36 Gaal, vista quella gente, disse a Zebul: «Ecco gente che scende dalle cime dei monti». Zebul gli rispose: «Tu vedi l'ombra dei monti e la prendi per uomini». 37 Gaal riprese a parlare e disse: «Ecco gente che scende dall'Ombelico della terra e una schiera che giunge per la via della Quercia dei Maghi». 38 Allora Zebul gli disse: «Dov'è ora la spavalderia di quando dicevi: Chi è Abimèlech, perché dobbiamo servirlo? Non è questo il popolo che disprezzavi? Ora esci in campo e combatti contro di lui!». 39 Allora Gaal uscì alla testa dei signori di Sichem e diede battaglia ad Abimèlech. 40 Ma Abimèlech lo inseguì ed egli fuggì dinanzi a lui e molti uomini caddero morti fino all'ingresso della porta. 41 Abimèlech ritornò ad Aruma e Zebul cacciò Gaal e i suoi fratelli, che non poterono più rimanere a Sichem.
Distruzione di Sichem e presa della torre di Sichem
42 Il giorno dopo il popolo di Sichem uscì alla campagna e Abimèlech ne fu informato.
43 Egli prese la sua gente, la divise in tre schiere e tese un agguato nella campagna: quando vide che il popolo usciva dalla città, si mosse contro di essi e li battè. 44 Abimèlech e la sua gente fecero irruzione e si fermarono all'ingresso della porta della città, mentre le altre due schiere si gettarono su quelli che erano nella campagna e li colpirono. 45 Abimèlech combattè contro la città tutto quel giorno, la prese e uccise il popolo che vi si trovava; poi distrusse la città e la cosparse di sale.
46 Tutti i signori della torre di Sichem, all'udir questo, entrarono nel sotterraneo del tempio di El-Berit. 47 Fu riferito ad Abimèlech che tutti i signori della torre di Sichem si erano adunati. 48 Allora Abimèlech salì sul monte Zalmon con tutta la gente che aveva con sé; prese in mano la scure, tagliò un ramo d'albero, lo sollevò e se lo mise in spalla; poi disse alla sua gente: «Quello che mi avete visto fare, fatelo presto anche voi!». 49 Tutti tagliarono ciascuno un ramo e seguirono Abimèlech; posero i rami contro il sotterraneo e bruciarono tra le fiamme la sala con quelli che vi erano dentro. Così perì tutta la gente della torre di Sichem, circa mille persone, fra uomini e donne.
Assedio di Tebes e morte di Abimèlech
50 Poi Abimèlech andò a Tebes, la cinse d'assedio e la prese. 51 In mezzo alla città c'era una torre fortificata, dove si rifugiarono tutti i signori della città, uomini e donne; vi si rinchiusero dentro e salirono sul terrazzo della torre. 52 Abimèlech, giunto alla torre, l'attaccò e si accostò alla porta della torre per appiccarvi il fuoco. 53 Ma una donna gettò giù il pezzo superiore di una macina sulla testa di Abimèlech e gli spaccò il cranio. 54 Egli chiamò in fretta il giovane che gli portava le armi e gli disse: «Tira fuori la spada e uccidimi, perché non si dica di me: L'ha ucciso una donna!». Il giovane lo trafisse ed egli morì. 55 Quando gli Israeliti videro che Abimèlech era morto, se ne andarono ciascuno a casa sua.
56 Così Dio fece ricadere sopra Abimèlech il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo settanta suoi fratelli. 57 Dio fece anche ricadere sul capo della gente di Sichem tutto il male che essa aveva fatto; così si avverò su di loro la maledizione di Iotam, figlio di Ierub-Baal.

9 Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal fue a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y habló con ellos, y con toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre, diciendo: 2 Yo os ruego que digáis en oídos de todos los de Siquem: ¿Qué os parece mejor, que os gobiernen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal, o que os gobierne un solo hombre? Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro, y carne vuestra. 3 Y hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre en oídos de todos los de Siquem todas estas palabras; y el corazón de ellos se inclinó a favor de Abimelec, porque decían: Nuestro hermano es. 4 Y le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abimelec alquiló hombres ociosos y vagabundos, que le siguieron. 5 Y viniendo a la casa de su padre en Ofra, mató a sus hermanos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta varones, sobre una misma piedra; pero quedó Jotam el hijo menor de Jerobaal, que se escondió. 6 Entonces se juntaron todos los de Siquem con toda la casa de Milo, y fueron y eligieron a Abimelec por rey, cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Siquem.
7 Cuando se lo dijeron a Jotam, fue y se puso en la cumbre del monte de Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó y les dijo: Oídme, varones de Siquem, y así os oiga Dios. 8 Fueron una vez los árboles a elegir rey sobre sí, y dijeron al olivo: Reina sobre nosotros. 9 Mas el olivo respondió: ¿He de dejar mi aceite, con el cual en mí se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles? 10 Y dijeron los árboles a la higuera: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros. 11 Y respondió la higuera: ¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles? 12 Dijeron luego los árboles a la vid: Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros. 13 Y la vid les respondió: ¿He de dejar mi mosto, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ser grande sobre los árboles? 14 Dijeron entonces todos los árboles a la zarza: Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros. 15 Y la zarza respondió a los árboles: Si en verdad me elegís por rey sobre vosotros, venid, abrigaos bajo de mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y devore a los cedros del Líbano.
16 Ahora, pues, si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido en hacer rey a Abimelec, y si habéis actuado bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, y si le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos 17 (porque mi padre peleó por vosotros, y expuso su vida al peligro para libraros de mano de Madián, 18 y vosotros os habéis levantado hoy contra la casa de mi padre, y habéis matado a sus hijos, setenta varones sobre una misma piedra; y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Siquem a Abimelec hijo de su criada, por cuanto es vuestro hermano); 19 si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelec, y él goce de vosotros. 20 Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelec, que consuma a los de Siquem y a la casa de Milo, y fuego salga de los de Siquem y de la casa de Milo, que consuma a Abimelec. 21 Y escapó Jotam y huyó, y se fue a Beer, y allí se estuvo por miedo de Abimelec su hermano.
22 Después que Abimelec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años, 23 envió Dios un mal espíritu entre Abimelec y los hombres de Siquem, y los de Siquem se levantaron contra Abimelec; 24 para que la violencia hecha a los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y la sangre de ellos, recayera sobre Abimelec su hermano que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Siquem que fortalecieron las manos de él para matar a sus hermanos. 25 Y los de Siquem pusieron en las cumbres de los montes asechadores que robaban a todos los que pasaban junto a ellos por el camino; de lo cual fue dado aviso a Abimelec.
26 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed vino con sus hermanos y se pasaron a Siquem, y los de Siquem pusieron en él su confianza. 27 Y saliendo al campo, vendimiaron sus viñedos, y pisaron la uva e hicieron fiesta; y entrando en el templo de sus dioses, comieron y bebieron, y maldijeron a Abimelec. 28 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: ¿Quién es Abimelec, y qué es Siquem, para que nosotros le sirvamos? ¿No es hijo de Jerobaal, y no es Zebul ayudante suyo? Servid a los varones de Hamor padre de Siquem; pero ¿por qué le hemos de servir a él? 29 Ojalá estuviera este pueblo bajo mi mano, pues yo arrojaría luego a Abimelec, y diría a Abimelec: Aumenta tus ejércitos, y sal.
30 Cuando Zebul gobernador de la ciudad oyó las palabras de Gaal hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira, 31 y envió secretamente mensajeros a Abimelec, diciendo: He aquí que Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem, y he aquí que están sublevando la ciudad contra ti. 32 Levántate, pues, ahora de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscadas en el campo. 33 Y por la mañana al salir el sol madruga y cae sobre la ciudad; y cuando él y el pueblo que está con él salgan contra ti, tú harás con él según se presente la ocasión.
34 Levantándose, pues, de noche Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías. 35 Y Gaal hijo de Ebed salió, y se puso a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; y Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, se levantaron de la emboscada. 36 Y viendo Gaal al pueblo, dijo a Zebul: He allí gente que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Y Zebul le respondió: Tú ves la sombra de los montes como si fueran hombres. 37 Volvió Gaal a hablar, y dijo: He allí gente que desciende de en medio de la tierra, y una tropa viene por el camino de la encina de los adivinos. 38 Y Zebul le respondió: ¿Dónde está ahora tu boca con que decías: Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos? ¿No es este el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues, ahora, y pelea con él. 39 Y Gaal salió delante de los de Siquem, y peleó contra Abimelec. 40 Mas lo persiguió Abimelec, y Gaal huyó delante de él; y cayeron heridos muchos hasta la entrada de la puerta. 41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma; y Zebul echó fuera a Gaal y a sus hermanos, para que no morasen en Siquem.
42 Aconteció el siguiente día, que el pueblo salió al campo; y fue dado aviso a Abimelec, 43 el cual, tomando gente, la repartió en tres compañías, y puso emboscadas en el campo; y cuando miró, he aquí el pueblo que salía de la ciudad; y se levantó contra ellos y los atacó. 44 Porque Abimelec y la compañía que estaba con él acometieron con ímpetu, y se detuvieron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, y las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo, y los mataron. 45 Y Abimelec peleó contra la ciudad todo aquel día, y tomó la ciudad, y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba; y asoló la ciudad, y la sembró de sal.
46 Cuando oyeron esto todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, se metieron en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit. 47 Y fue dado aviso a Abimelec, de que estaban reunidos todos los hombres de la torre de Siquem. 48 Entonces subió Abimelec al monte de Salmón, él y toda la gente que con él estaba; y tomó Abimelec un hacha en su mano, y cortó una rama de los árboles, y levantándola se la puso sobre sus hombros, diciendo al pueblo que estaba con él: Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos a hacerlo como yo. 49 Y todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama, y siguieron a Abimelec, y las pusieron junto a la fortaleza, y prendieron fuego con ellas a la fortaleza, de modo que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, como unos mil hombres y mujeres.
50 Después Abimelec se fue a Tebes, y puso sitio a Tebes, y la tomó. 51 En medio de aquella ciudad había una torre fortificada, a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres y las mujeres, y todos los señores de la ciudad; y cerrando tras sí las puertas, se subieron al techo de la torre. 52 Y vino Abimelec a la torre, y combatiéndola, llegó hasta la puerta de la torre para prenderle fuego. 53 Mas una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec, y le rompió el cráneo. 54 Entonces llamó apresuradamente a su escudero, y le dijo: Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: Una mujer lo mató. Y su escudero le atravesó, y murió. 55 Y cuando los israelitas vieron muerto a Abimelec, se fueron cada uno a su casa. 56 Así pagó Dios a Abimelec el mal que hizo contra su padre, matando a sus setenta hermanos. 57 Y todo el mal de los hombres de Siquem lo hizo Dios volver sobre sus cabezas, y vino sobre ellos la maldición de Jotam hijo de Jerobaal.

Abimelech Becomes King
9 Abimelech [8:31] son of Jerub-Baal [C Gideon; 6:32] went to his ·uncles [L mother’s brothers] in the city of Shechem. He said to ·his uncles [L them] and all of his mother’s ·family group [clan], 2 “·Ask [or Whisper to; L Speak in the ears of] the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem, ‘Is it better for the seventy sons of Gideon to rule over you or for one man to rule?’ Remember, I am your ·relative [L bone and your flesh].”
3 Abimelech’s ·uncles [mother’s brothers] ·spoke to [or whispered to; L spoke in the ears of] all the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem about this [L for him; on his behalf]. And ·they decided [they were inclined; L their heart was stretched] to follow Abimelech, because they said, “He is our ·relative [brother].” 4 So the leaders of Shechem gave Abimelech about ·one and three-quarter pounds [L seventy pieces/coins] of silver from the temple of the god Baal-Berith [8:33]. Abimelech used the silver to hire some worthless, reckless men, who ·followed him wherever he went [L went after him]. 5 He went to Ophrah, the hometown of his father, and murdered his seventy brothers, the sons of Jerub-Baal [C Gideon; 6:32]. He killed them all on one stone. But Jerub-Baal’s youngest son, Jotham, hid from Abimelech and ·escaped [survived; was left]. 6 Then all of the leaders of Shechem and Beth Millo [C “house of the fill”; probably the earthen structure on which the Tower of Shechem (v. 46) was built] gathered beside the ·great tree [oak] by the pillar [C likely an object of pagan worship] in Shechem. There they made Abimelech their king.
Jotham’s Story
7 When Jotham heard this, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He shouted to the people: “Listen to me, you ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem, so that God will listen to you! 8 One day the trees decided to ·appoint [L anoint] a king to rule over them. They said to the olive tree, ‘·You be king [Rule; Reign] over us!’
9 “But the olive tree said, ‘Men and gods are honored by my oil. Should I ·stop making it [L cease my fatness/abundance] and go and sway over the other trees?’ [C Ancient kings were sometimes compared to trees, providing shelter and protection for their subjects.]
10 “Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and ·be king [rule; reign] over us!’
11 “But the fig tree answered, ‘Should I stop making my sweet and good fruit and go and sway over the other trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and ·be king [rule; reign] over us!’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘My new wine makes men and gods happy. Should I stop making it and go and sway over the trees?’
14 “Then all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and ·be king [rule; reign] over us.’
15 “But the thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to ·appoint [L anoint] me king over you, come and ·find shelter [take refuge] in my shade! But if not, let fire come out of the thornbush and ·burn up [consume; devour] the cedars of Lebanon!’ [C A worthless thornbush provides no shelter and burns hot and quick (Ps. 58:9), igniting the great cedars of Lebanon (the most valuable trees in the ancient Near East); see v. 20.]
16 “Now, ·were you completely honest and sincere [L if you acted in truth and integrity/blamelessness] when you made Abimelech king? ·Have you [L And if you have] been fair to Jerub-Baal [C Gideon; 6:32] and his ·family [L house]? ·Have [L And if] you treated him as ·you should [L his hands deserved]? 17 Remember, my father fought for you and risked his life to ·save [rescue; T deliver] you from the ·power of the Midianites [L hand of Midian]. 18 But now you have ·turned [revolted; risen up] against my father’s ·family [L house] and have killed his seventy sons on one stone [v. 5]. You have made Abimelech, the son of my father’s ·slave girl [maidservant], king over the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem just because he is your ·relative [brother]! 19 So then, if you have ·been honest and sincere [acted in truth and integrity/blamelessness] to Jerub-Baal [C Gideon; 6:32] and his ·family [L house] today, ·be happy with [rejoice in] Abimelech as your king. And may he ·be happy with [rejoice in] you! 20 But if not, may fire come out of Abimelech and completely burn you ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem and Beth Millo [C the cedars of Lebanon in the allegory; v. 15]! Also may fire come out of the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem and Beth Millo and burn up Abimelech!”
21 Then Jotham ran away and escaped to the city of Beer [C meaning “well”]. He lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelech.
Abimelech Fights Against Shechem
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years. 23 Then God sent an evil spirit to make trouble between Abimelech and the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem so that they ·turned [revolted; acted treacherously] against him. 24 God did this to repay [avenge] the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerub-Baal [C Gideon; 6:32] and to make their brother Abimelech pay for their spilled blood, together with the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem who ·helped him murder [L strengthened his hand to kill] his brothers. 25 The ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem were against Abimelech then and put men on the hilltops in ambush to rob everyone going by. And Abimelech was told.
26 A man named Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers ·moved into [came to] Shechem, and the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem ·trusted [or gave their allegiance to] him. 27 They went out to the vineyards to pick grapes, and they ·squeezed [stomped/trod on] the grapes. Then they had a feast in the temple of their god, where they ate and drank and cursed Abimelech. 28 Gaal son of Ebed said, “·We are the men of Shechem. Who is Abimelech [L Who is Abimelech and who is Shechem] that we should serve him? Isn’t he one of Jerub-Baal’s [C Gideon’s] sons, and isn’t Zebul his ·officer [deputy; lieutenant]? ·We should serve [L Serve…!] the men of Hamor, Shechem’s father. Why should we serve Abimelech? 29 If you made me commander of these people, I would get rid of Abimelech. I would say to him, ‘·Get your army ready [Muster your troops; Strengthen your army] and come out to battle.’”
30 Now when Zebul, the ·ruler [governor] of ·Shechem [L the city], heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, ·he was very angry [L his anger burned]. 31 He sent messengers to Abimelech ·secretly [deceptively; or in Arumah], saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and Gaal’s brothers have come to Shechem, and they are ·turning [inciting; stirring up] the city against you! 32 You and your men should get up during the night and ·hide [lie in wait; set an ambush] in the fields outside the city. 33 As soon as the sun comes up in the morning, ·attack [raid; rush upon] the city. When Gaal and his men come out to fight you, do what ·you can to them [L your hand finds to do].”
34 So Abimelech and all his soldiers got up during the night and ·hid near [lay in wait outside; set an ambush against] Shechem in four groups. 35 Gaal son of Ebed went out and was standing at the entrance to the city gate. As he was standing there, Abimelech and his soldiers came out of their ·hiding places [ambush].
36 When Gaal saw the soldiers, he said to Zebul, “Look! There are people coming down from the mountains!”
But Zebul said, “You are seeing the shadows of the mountains. The shadows just look like people.”
37 But again Gaal said, “Look, there are people coming down from the ·center of the land [or navel of the earth; Ezek. 38:12], and there is a group coming from the ·fortune-tellers’ tree [diviner’s oak; C a place where fortunes were told; ironically, Gaal’s fortune had been sealed]!”
38 Zebul said to Gaal, “Where is your ·bragging [L mouth] now? You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ ·You made fun of [Didn’t you mock/insult/despise…?] these men. Now go out and fight them.”
39 So Gaal led the ·men [leading citizens; lords] of Shechem out to fight Abimelech. 40 Abimelech ·and his men chased them [L chased him], and many of Gaal’s men ·were killed [or fell wounded] before they could get back to the city gate. 41 While Abimelech stayed at Arumah, Zebul forced Gaal and his brothers to leave Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields. When Abimelech was told about it, 43 he separated his men into three groups and ·hid them [set an ambush; lay in wait] in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he jumped up and ·attacked [struck; slew] them. 44 Abimelech and his ·group [force; company] ran to the entrance gate to the city. The other two groups ran out to the people in the fields and struck them down. 45 Abimelech and his men fought the city of Shechem all day until they captured it and killed its people. Then he ·tore it down [razed/leveled the city] and ·threw salt over the ruins [L sowed it with salt; C to symbolize destruction and desolation; Deut. 29:23; Ps. 107:34].
The Tower of Shechem Burns
46 When the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] who were in the Tower of Shechem [C either a nearby town or a structure within Shechem; v. 6] heard what had happened to Shechem, they gathered in the ·safest room [stronghold; inner chamber] of the temple of El Berith [9:4]. 47 Abimelech heard that all the ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of the Tower of Shechem had gathered there. 48 So he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon [C near Shechem]. Abimelech took an ax and cut some ·branches [brushwood] and put them on his shoulders. He said to all those with him, “Hurry! Do what I have done!” 49 So all those men cut ·branches [brushwood] and followed Abimelech and piled them against the ·safest room [stronghold; inner chamber] of the temple. Then they set them on fire and burned ·the people inside [L the stronghold over them]. So all the people who were at the Tower of Shechem also died—about a thousand men and women.
Abimelech’s Death
50 Then Abimelech went to the city of Thebez. He ·surrounded the city, attacked it, [L besieged/encamped against Thebez] and captured it. 51 But inside the city was a strong ·tower [or fortress], so all the men, women, and ·leaders [leading citizens; lords] of that city ran to the tower. When they got inside, they locked the door behind them. Then they climbed up to the roof of the tower [C to fight back and avoid the fate of the people of Shechem; v. 49]. 52 Abimelech came to the tower to attack it. He approached the door of the tower to set it on fire, 53 but as he came near, a woman dropped a ·grinding stone [L upper millstone; C the smaller stone (about 10 inches long) that was rolled by hand over the top of the larger lower millstone; Deut. 24:6] on his head, crushing his skull.
54 He quickly called to the officer who carried his armor and said, “Draw your sword and kill me. I don’t want people to say, ‘A woman killed Abimelech [C a humiliation for a warrior; 4:17–24; 1 Sam. 31:4].’” So ·the officer [his servant; or the young man] stabbed Abimelech, and he died. 55 When the people of Israel saw Abimelech was dead, they all returned ·home [L each man to his place].
56 In that way God ·punished [repaid; returned to] Abimelech for all the evil he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. 57 God also ·punished [repaid; L returned on the heads of] the men of Shechem for the evil they had done. So the curse spoken by Jotham, the son of Jerub-Baal [C Gideon], came ·true [L on them].
