Derrota de Zeba y Zalmuna
8 Entonces los hombres de Efraín le dijeron: ¿Qué es esto que nos has hecho, al no llamarnos cuando fuiste a pelear contra Madián(A)? Y lo criticaron duramente. 2 Pero él les dijo: ¿Qué he hecho yo ahora en comparación con vosotros? ¿No es mejor el rebusco de Efraín que la vendimia de Abiezer? 3 Dios ha entregado en vuestras manos a los jefes de Madián, Oreb y Zeeb; ¿y qué pude hacer yo en comparación con vosotros? Entonces se aplacó la ira[a] de ellos contra él cuando dijo esto[b].
4 Gedeón y los trescientos hombres que iban con él llegaron al Jordán y lo cruzaron, cansados, mas continuando la persecución(B). 5 Y dijo a los hombres de Sucot(C): Os ruego que deis pan[c] a la gente que me sigue, porque están cansados, y estoy persiguiendo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, reyes de Madián. 6 Y los jefes de Sucot dijeron: ¿Están ya las manos[d] de Zeba y Zalmuna en tu poder[e], para que demos pan a tu ejército(D)? 7 Y Gedeón respondió: Muy bien[f], cuando el Señor haya entregado en mi mano a Zeba y a Zalmuna(E), trillaré[g] vuestras carnes con espinos del desierto y con abrojos. 8 De allí subió a Peniel(F), y les habló de la misma manera; y los hombres de Peniel le respondieron tal como los de Sucot le habían contestado. 9 Y habló también a los hombres de Peniel, diciendo: Cuando yo vuelva sano y salvo[h], derribaré esta torre(G). 10 Ahora bien, Zeba y Zalmuna estaban en Carcor, y sus ejércitos[i] con ellos, unos quince mil hombres, los que habían quedado de todo el ejército[j] de los hijos del oriente; porque los que habían caído eran ciento veinte mil hombres que sacaban espada(H). 11 Y subió Gedeón por el camino de los que habitaban en tiendas al este de Noba y Jogbeha, y atacó[k] el campamento cuando el campamento estaba desprevenido[l]. 12 Cuando Zeba y Zalmuna huyeron, los persiguió; capturó a los dos reyes de Madián, Zeba y Zalmuna y llenó de terror a todo el ejército[m].
13 Después Gedeón, hijo de Joás, volvió de la batalla por la subida a Heres[n]. 14 Y capturó a un joven de[o] Sucot y lo interrogó. Entonces el joven le dio por escrito los nombres de los príncipes de Sucot y de sus ancianos, setenta y siete hombres. 15 Y fue a los hombres de Sucot y dijo: He aquí a Zeba y a Zalmuna, acerca de los cuales me injuriasteis, diciendo: «¿Están ya las manos[p] de Zeba y Zalmuna en tu mano para que demos pan a tus hombres que están fatigados(I)?». 16 Entonces tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, y espinos del desierto y abrojos, y con ellos castigó a[q] los hombres de Sucot. 17 Derribó la torre de Peniel(J) y mató a los hombres de la ciudad.
18 Después dijo a Zeba y a Zalmuna: ¿Qué clase de hombres eran los que matasteis en Tabor? Y ellos respondieron: Eran como tú, cada uno parecía hijo[r] de rey. 19 Y él dijo: Eran mis hermanos, hijos de mi madre. Vive el Señor, que si los hubierais dejado con vida, yo no os quitaría la vida. 20 Y dijo a Jeter su primogénito: Levántate y mátalos. Pero el joven no sacó la espada porque tenía temor, pues todavía era muchacho. 21 Entonces Zeba y Zalmuna dijeron: Levántate tú y cae sobre nosotros; porque como es el hombre, así es su fortaleza[s]. Y se levantó Gedeón y mató a Zeba y a Zalmuna(K), y tomó los adornos de media luna que sus camellos llevaban al cuello(L).
Ultimos años de Gedeón
22 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: Reina sobre nosotros, tú y tus hijos, y también el hijo de tu hijo, porque nos has librado de la mano de Madián. 23 Pero Gedeón les dijo: No reinaré sobre vosotros, ni tampoco reinará sobre vosotros mi hijo; el Señor reinará sobre vosotros(M). 24 Les dijo también Gedeón: Quisiera pediros[t] que cada uno de vosotros me dé un zarcillo[u] de su botín (pues tenían zarcillos de oro, porque eran ismaelitas(N)). 25 Y ellos dijeron: De cierto te los daremos. Y tendieron un manto, y cada uno de ellos echó allí un zarcillo de su botín. 26 El peso de los zarcillos de oro que él pidió fue de mil setecientos siclos[v] de oro, sin contar los adornos de media luna, los pendientes y los vestidos de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián y sin contar los collares que llevaban sus camellos al cuello. 27 Y Gedeón hizo de ello un efod(O), y lo colocó en Ofra, su ciudad, con el cual todo Israel se prostituyó allí, y esto vino a ser ruina[w] para Gedeón y su casa. 28 Así fue subyugado Madián delante de los hijos de Israel, y ya no volvieron a levantar cabeza. Y el país tuvo descanso por cuarenta años en los días de Gedeón.
29 Entonces Jerobaal(P), hijo de Joás, fue y habitó en su casa. 30 Y tuvo Gedeón setenta hijos(Q) que fueron sus descendientes directos[x], porque tuvo muchas mujeres. 31 La concubina que tenía en Siquem también le dio un hijo, y le puso por nombre Abimelec. 32 Y murió Gedeón, hijo de Joás, a una edad avanzada y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre Joás, en Ofra de los abiezeritas.
33 Y sucedió que al morir Gedeón, los hijos de Israel volvieron a prostituirse con los baales(R) e hicieron a Baal-berit su dios(S). 34 Y los hijos de Israel se olvidaron del Señor su Dios(T) que los había librado de manos de todos sus enemigos en derredor; 35 tampoco mostraron bondad a la casa de Jerobaal(U), es decir, Gedeón, conforme a todo el bien que él había hecho a Israel.

8 Ma gli uomini di Efraim gli dissero: «Che azione ci hai fatto, non chiamandoci quando sei andato a combattere contro Madian?». Litigarono con lui violentemente. 2 Egli rispose loro: «Che ho fatto io in confronto a voi? La racimolatura di Efraim non vale più della vendemmia di Abiezer? 3 Dio vi ha messo nelle mani i capi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb; che dunque ho potuto fare io in confronto a voi?». A tali parole, la loro ira contro di lui si calmò.
C. La campagna di Gedeone in Transgiordania e la fine di Gedeone
Gedeone insegue il nemico oltre il Giordano
4 Gedeone arrivò al Giordano e lo attraversò. Ma egli e i suoi trecento uomini erano stanchi e affamati. 5 Disse a quelli di Succot: «Date focacce di pane alla gente che mi segue, perché è stanca e io sto inseguendo Zebach e Zalmunna, re di Madian». 6 Ma i capi di Succot risposero: «Tieni forse gia nelle tue mani i polsi di Zebach e di Zalmunna, perché dobbiamo dare il pane al tuo esercito?». 7 Gedeone disse: «Ebbene, quando il Signore mi avrà messo nelle mani Zebach e Zalmunna, vi strazierò le carni con le spine del deserto e con i cardi». 8 Di là salì a Penuel e parlò agli uomini di Penuel nello stesso modo; essi gli risposero come avevano fatto quelli di Succot. 9 Egli disse anche agli uomini di Penuel: «Quando tornerò in pace, abbatterò questa torre».
Disfatta di Zebach e di Zalmunna
10 Zebach e Zalmunna erano a Karkor con il loro accampamento di circa quindicimila uomini, quanti erano rimasti dell'intero esercito dei figli dell'oriente; centoventimila uomini armati di spada erano caduti. 11 Gedeone salì per la via dei nomadi a oriente di Nobach e di Iogbea e mise in rotta l'esercito che si credeva sicuro. 12 Zebach e Zalmunna si diedero alla fuga, ma egli li inseguì, prese i due re di Madian, Zebach e Zalmunna, e sbaragliò tutto l'esercito.
Le vendette di Gedeone
13 Poi Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, tornò dalla battaglia per la salita di Cheres. 14 Catturò un giovane della gente di Succot e lo interrogò; quegli gli mise per iscritto i nomi dei capi e degli anziani di Succot: settantasette uomini. 15 Poi venne alla gente di Succot e disse: «Ecco Zebach e Zalmunna, a proposito dei quali mi avete insultato dicendo: Hai tu forse gia nelle mani i polsi di Zebach e Zalmunna perché dobbiamo dare il pane alla tua gente stanca?». 16 Prese gli anziani della città e con le spine del deserto e con i cardi castigò gli uomini di Succot. 17 Demolì la torre di Penuel e uccise gli uomini della città. 18 Poi disse a Zebach e a Zalmunna: «Come erano gli uomini che avete uccisi al Tabor?». Quelli risposero: «Erano come te; ognuno di loro aveva l'aspetto di un figlio di re». 19 Egli riprese: «Erano miei fratelli, figli di mia madre; per la vita del Signore, se aveste risparmiato loro la vita, io non vi ucciderei!». 20 Poi disse a Ieter, suo primogenito: «Su, uccidili!». Ma il giovane non estrasse la spada, perché aveva paura, poiché era ancora giovane. 21 Zebach e Zalmunna dissero: «Suvvia, colpisci tu stesso, poiché qual è l'uomo, tale è la sua forza». Gedeone si alzò e uccise Zebach e Zalmunna e prese le lunette che i loro cammelli portavano al collo.
Gedeone. La fine della sua vita
22 Allora gli Israeliti dissero a Gedeone: «Regna su di noi tu e i tuoi discendenti, poiché ci hai liberati dalla mano di Madian». 23 Ma Gedeone rispose loro: «Io non regnerò su di voi né mio figlio regnerà; il Signore regnerà su di voi». 24 Poi Gedeone disse loro: «Una cosa voglio chiedervi: ognuno di voi mi dia un pendente del suo bottino». I nemici avevano pendenti d'oro, perché erano Ismaeliti. 25 Risposero: «Li daremo volentieri». Egli stese allora il mantello e ognuno vi gettò un pendente del suo bottino». 26 Il peso dei pendenti d'oro, che egli aveva chiesti, fu di millesettecento sicli d'oro, oltre le lunette, le catenelle e le vesti di porpora, che i re di Madian avevano addosso, e oltre le collane che i loro cammelli avevano al collo. 27 Gedeone ne fece un efod che pose in Ofra sua città; tutto Israele vi si prostrò davanti in quel luogo e ciò divenne una causa di rovina per Gedeone e per la sua casa. 28 Così Madian fu umiliato davanti agli Israeliti e non alzò più il capo; il paese rimase in pace per quarant'anni, durante la vita di Gedeone. 29 Ierub-Baal, figlio di Ioas, tornò a dimorare a casa sua. 30 Gedeone ebbe settanta figli che gli erano nati dalle molte mogli. 31 Anche la sua concubina che stava a Sichem gli partorì un figlio, che chiamò Abimèlech. 32 Poi Gedeone, figlio di Ioas, morì in buona vecchiaia e fu sepolto nella tomba di Ioas suo padre a Ofra degli Abiezeriti.
Ricaduta di Israele
33 Dopo la morte di Gedeone gli Israeliti tornarono a prostituirsi a Baal e presero Baal-Berit come loro dio. 34 Gli Israeliti non si ricordarono del Signore loro Dio che li aveva liberati dalle mani di tutti i loro nemici all'intorno 35 e non dimostrarono gratitudine alla casa di Ierub-Baal, cioè di Gedeone, per tutto il bene che egli aveva fatto a Israele.

8 The men of Ephraim asked Gideon, “·Why did you treat us this way [L What is this thing you have done to us]? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight against Midian?” They argued ·angrily [fiercely; greatly] with Gideon.
2 But he answered them, “·I have not done as well as you! [L What have I done compared to you?] The ·small part you did [L the gleanings of Ephraim; C picking up the leftover grapes after harvest] was better than ·all that my people of Abiezer did [L the vintage/grape harvest of Abiezer]. 3 God ·let you capture [L gave into your hand] Oreb and Zeeb, the ·princes [leaders; commanders] of Midian. ·How can I compare what I did with what you did [L What did I do in comparison]?” When the men of Ephraim heard Gideon’s answer, ·they were not as angry anymore [they calmed down; L their spirit declined/subsided].
Gideon Captures Two Kings
4 When Gideon and his three hundred men came to the Jordan River, they were ·tired [exhausted], but they chased the enemy across to the other side. 5 Gideon said to the men of Succoth, “Please give my soldiers some loaves of bread because they are ·very tired [exhausted]. I am chasing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
6 But the ·leaders [princes; officials] of Succoth said, “Why should we give your soldiers bread? ·You haven’t caught Zebah and Zalmunna yet [L Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand?].”
7 Then Gideon said, “·The Lord will surrender [L When the Lord surrenders] Zebah and Zalmunna to me. After that, I will ·whip [beat; tear; L thresh] your skin with thorns and briers from the ·desert [wilderness].”
8 Gideon left Succoth and went up to the city of Peniel and ·asked them for food [L spoke this to them]. But the people of Peniel gave him the same answer as the people of Succoth. 9 So Gideon said to the men of Peniel, “·After I win the victory [L When I return in peace], I will return and pull down this tower.”
10 Zebah and Zalmunna and their army were in the city of Karkor. About fifteen thousand men were left of the armies of the ·peoples [L sons] of the east. Already one hundred twenty thousand ·soldiers [L men who draw the sword] had ·been killed [fallen in battle]. 11 Gideon went up the road of those who live in tents [C the route taken by caravans or nomads] east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and he attacked the ·enemy army [camp] ·when they did not expect it [in a surprise attack; L while they were secure]. 12 Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian, ran away, but Gideon chased and captured them and ·frightened away [routed; caused to panic] their army.
13 Then Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle by the ·Pass [or Ascent] of Heres. 14 Gideon captured a young man from Succoth and ·asked him some questions [interrogated him]. So the young man wrote down for Gideon the names of seventy-seven ·officers [princes; leaders] and elders of Succoth.
Gideon Punishes Succoth
15 When Gideon came to Succoth, he said to the people of that city, “·Here are [L Look!; T Behold!] Zebah and Zalmunna. You ·made fun of [taunted; insulted] me by saying, ‘Why should we give bread to your tired men? ·You have not caught Zebah and Zalmunna yet [L Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your hand?].’” 16 So Gideon took the elders of the city and ·punished them [taught them a lesson] with thorns and briers from the ·desert [wilderness]. 17 He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the people in that city.
18 Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What were the men like that you killed on Mount Tabor?”
They answered, “They were like you. Each one of them looked like ·a prince [L sons of a king].”
19 Gideon said, “Those were my brothers, my mother’s sons. As surely as the Lord lives, I would not kill you if you had spared them.” 20 Then Gideon said to Jether, his oldest son, “Kill them.” But Jether was only a boy and was afraid, so he did not draw his sword.
21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said to Gideon, “Come on. ·Kill us [L Do it] yourself. As the saying goes, ‘·It takes a man to do a man’s job [L As is a man, so is his strength; C it was honorable to be killed by a great warrior, but humiliating to be killed by a boy].’” So Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna and took the ·decorations [L crescent-shaped ornaments] off their camels’ necks.
Gideon Makes an Idol
22 The people of Israel said to Gideon, “You ·saved [rescued; T delivered] us from the Midianites. Now, we want you and your son and your grandson to rule over us [C to establish a royal dynasty].”
23 But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will be your ruler.” 24 He said, “I want you to do this one thing for me. I want each of you to give me a gold earring from ·the things you took in the fighting [L his plunder].” (The Ishmaelites [C related to the Midianites, and sometimes identified with them; Gen. 37:25–28] wore gold earrings.)
25 They said, “We will ·gladly [indeed] give you what you want.” So they spread out a ·coat [cloak; garment], and everyone threw down an earring from ·what he had taken [his plunder]. 26 The gold earrings weighed ·about forty-three pounds [L 1,700 shekels of gold]. This did not count the ·decorations [L crescent-shaped ornaments], ·necklaces [pendants], and purple robes worn by the kings of Midian, nor the chains from the camels’ necks. 27 Gideon used the gold to make a ·holy vest [ephod; C perhaps in imitation of the high priest and used to discern God’s will; Ex. 29:2–5], which he put in his hometown of Ophrah. But all the Israelites ·were unfaithful to God [L prostituted themselves] and worshiped it, so it became a ·trap [snare; cause of sin] for Gideon and his family.
The Death of Gideon
28 So Midian was ·under the rule of [subdued before] ·Israel [L the sons/T children of Israel]; they did not ·cause trouble anymore [L raise its head again]. And the land had ·peace [rest] for forty years, ·as long as Gideon was alive [L in the days of Gideon].
29 Jerub-Baal [C another name for Gideon; 6:32] son of Joash went to his home to live. 30 He had seventy sons ·of his own [L who went out from his loins], because he had many wives. 31 He had a ·slave woman [concubine; C a secondary wife, of lower status than a primary wife but higher than a common servant] who lived in Shechem, and he had a son by her, whom he named Abimelech [C “My father is king”]. 32 So Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age. He was buried in the tomb of Joash, his father, in Ophrah, ·where the Abiezrites live [L of the Abiezrites].
33 As soon as Gideon died, the ·people [L sons; T children] of Israel ·were again unfaithful to God and followed [L prostituted themselves to] the Baals. They made Baal-Berith their god. 34 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] did not remember the Lord their God, who had ·saved [rescued; T delivered] them from all their enemies living all around them. 35 And they were not ·kind [loyal; faithful] to the family of Jerub-Baal, also called Gideon, for all the good he had done for Israel.
