Gedeón captura a los reyes madianitas
8 Los de la tribu de Efraín se enojaron y discutieron con Gedeón porque él no los había mandado llamar cuando salió a pelear contra los madianitas. 2 Pero él les contestó:
—¿No se dan cuenta de que ustedes hicieron más aún de lo que yo hice? Lo poco que ustedes hicieron vale más que lo mucho que hicimos nosotros. 3 Dios les entregó a Oreb y a Zeeb, los jefes madianitas. ¿Qué hice yo que se pueda comparar con lo que ustedes hicieron?
Cuando los de Efraín oyeron estas palabras de Gedeón, se les pasó el enojo contra él.
4 Gedeón y sus trescientos hombres llegaron al Jordán y lo cruzaron, aunque estaban rendidos de cansancio por ir persiguiendo al enemigo. 5 En Sucot, Gedeón les pidió a los que allí vivían:
—Por favor, den algo de comer a los que vienen conmigo, porque están rendidos de cansancio. Andamos persiguiendo a los reyes madianitas Zébah y Salmuná.
6 Pero los jefes de Sucot le respondieron:
—¿Acaso ya has capturado a Zébah y Salmuná, para que alimentemos a tu ejército?
7 Y Gedeón les contestó:
—¡Después que el Señor me entregue a Zébah y Salmuná, regresaré y les desgarraré a ustedes la carne con espinas y zarzas del desierto!
8 De allí fue a Penuel, donde pidió lo mismo que en Sucot. Pero como los de Penuel le respondieron igual que los de Sucot, 9 Gedeón les dijo:
—¡Cuando yo regrese vencedor, echaré abajo esa torre!
10 Zébah y Salmuná estaban en Carcor con unos quince mil hombres, que era todo lo que quedaba del ejército del oriente, pues habían muerto ciento veinte mil de ellos. 11 Gedeón avanzó por el camino que bordea el desierto, al este de Nóbah y Jogbehá, y atacó su campamento cuando ellos menos lo esperaban. 12 Zébah y Salmuná salieron huyendo, pero Gedeón los persiguió y los capturó, y llenó de espanto a todo el ejército.
13 Cuando Gedeón regresaba de la batalla por el paso de Heres, 14 capturó a un joven de Sucot y lo interrogó; y aquel joven le dio por escrito los nombres de los setenta y siete jefes y ancianos de Sucot. 15 Entonces Gedeón fue a Sucot y les dijo a los de este pueblo:
—¿Recuerdan cómo se burlaron de mí por causa de Zébah y de Salmuná? ¿Recuerdan que les negaron pan a mis hombres, que estaban rendidos de cansancio, diciéndonos que todavía no los teníamos cautivos? ¡Pues aquí los tienen!
16 Entonces Gedeón tomó espinas y zarzas del desierto, y con ellas castigó a los ancianos de Sucot. 17 También echó abajo la torre de Penuel, y mató a la gente de esta ciudad. 18 Luego les preguntó a Zébah y a Salmuná:
—¿Cómo eran los hombres que ustedes mataron en Tabor?
Y ellos le contestaron:
—Se parecían a ti. Cada uno de ellos parecía un príncipe.
19 Entonces Gedeón gritó:
—¡Mis hermanos! ¡Mataron a mis propios hermanos! Tan cierto como que el Señor vive, que si ustedes no los hubieran matado, yo tampoco los mataría a ustedes ahora.
20 En seguida le ordenó a Jéter, su hijo mayor:
—¡Levántate y mátalos!
Pero Jéter era todavía muy joven, y no se atrevió a sacar su espada. 21 Entonces Zébah y Salmuná le dijeron a Gedeón:
—¡Pues mátanos tú! ¡Al hombre se le conoce por su valentía!
Gedeón se levantó y los mató, y tomó los adornos que llevaban al cuello los camellos de Zébah y Salmuná. 22 Entonces los israelitas le dijeron:
—Ya que tú nos has librado del poder de los madianitas, queremos que tú y tus descendientes nos gobiernen.
23 Pero Gedeón les contestó:
—Ni yo ni mi hijo los gobernaremos a ustedes. El Señor será quien los gobierne. 24 Lo que sí quiero es pedirles que me den los anillos que han capturado.
Esos anillos de oro los usaban los soldados enemigos, porque eran gente del desierto. 25 Los israelitas, tendiendo una capa en el suelo, echaron en ella los anillos que habían tomado, y le dijeron a Gedeón:
—Aquí los tienes.
26 Todo el oro de los anillos pesó casi diecinueve kilos, sin contar los adornos ni las joyas y telas de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián, ni los collares de sus camellos. 27 Con ese oro Gedeón hizo un efod, que puso en Ofrá, su ciudad, y todo Israel le fue infiel al Señor por causa del efod, el cual se volvió una trampa para Gedeón y su familia.
28 Así fue como los madianitas quedaron sometidos a Israel, y nunca más volvieron a levantar cabeza. Durante cuarenta años, mientras Gedeón vivió, hubo paz en la región.
Muerte de Gedeón
29-30 Jerubaal, o sea Gedeón, se fue a vivir a su propia casa, y tuvo setenta hijos, pues tenía muchas esposas. 31 Una concubina que él tenía en Siquem, también le dio un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Abimélec.
32 Gedeón murió ya entrado en años, y lo enterraron en la tumba de su padre Joás, en Ofrá, ciudad del clan de Abiézer.
33 Después que murió Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a abandonar a Dios para adorar a las diferentes representaciones de Baal, y escogieron como su dios a Baal-berit. 34 Se olvidaron del Señor su Dios, que los había salvado de todos los enemigos que los rodeaban, 35 y no correspondieron con bondad a la familia de Jerubaal, o sea Gedeón, por todo lo bueno que él había hecho por ellos.

8 Los de la tribu de Efraín estaban muy enojados con Gedeón, y le reclamaron:
—¿Por qué no nos dijiste que ibas a pelear contra los madianitas? ¿Por qué no nos avisaste?
2 Gedeón les respondió:
—Comparado con lo que hicieron ustedes, yo no he hecho nada. Lo poco que hicieron ustedes fue mucho más de lo que hicimos nosotros. 3 Con la ayuda de Dios pudieron capturar a Oreb y a Zeeb, los jefes madianitas, y eso tiene mucho más valor.
Con estas palabras de Gedeón, se les pasó el enojo a los de Efraín.
4 Gedeón y los trescientos hombres que lo acompañaban llegaron al río Jordán, y lo cruzaron. Estaban muy cansados, pero seguían persiguiendo al enemigo. 5 Al llegar a Sucot, Gedeón les pidió a los que vivían allí:
—Por favor, denles algo de comer a mis soldados, porque están muy cansados. Estamos persiguiendo a Zébah y a Salmuná, los dos reyes madianitas.
6 Pero los jefes de Sucot le respondieron:
—¿Por qué tenemos que darle de comer a tu ejército? ¡Todavía no han capturado a Zébah y Salmuná!
7 Entonces Gedeón les dijo:
—Está bien. Con la ayuda de Dios capturaremos a Zébah y a Salmuná, y cuando lo hayamos hecho volveremos a este lugar y nos vengaremos de ustedes. ¡Los azotaremos con ramas espinosas y arbustos del desierto!
8 De allí Gedeón se fue a la ciudad de Penuel, y les pidió lo mismo a los que vivían allí. Los de Penuel le contestaron lo mismo que los de Sucot. 9 Así que Gedeón les dijo a los de Penuel:
—¡Cuando vuelva, después de lograr la paz, echaré abajo esta torre!
10 Zébah y Salmuná estaban en Carcor con unos quince mil hombres, que era lo que quedaba del ejército que salió del este, porque habían muerto ciento veinte mil soldados. 11 Gedeón subió por el camino que pasa al este de Nóbah y Jogbehá, y los atacó por sorpresa. 12 Zébah y Salmuná trataron de huir, pero Gedeón los persiguió y los capturó. Eso causó mucho miedo y confusión en el ejército madianita.
13 Cuando Gedeón volvía de la batalla por el paso de Jeres, 14 capturó a un joven de Sucot y le hizo unas preguntas. El joven le dio los nombres de los setenta y siete jefes de Sucot. 15 Entonces Gedeón fue a hablar con los hombres de Sucot y les dijo: «¿Se acuerdan que se burlaron de mí y no quisieron ayudarme? Me dijeron que no podían darle de comer a mi cansado ejército, porque todavía no habíamos capturado a Zébah y a Salmuná. ¿Se acuerdan? ¡Pues aquí los tienen!»
16 Y Gedeón tomó a los jefes de Sucot, y los azotó con ramas espinosas y arbustos del desierto. 17 También echó abajo la torre de Penuel, y mató a los hombres de esa ciudad.
18 Después les preguntó a Zébah y a Salmuná:
—¿Cómo eran los hombres que mataron ustedes en Tabor?
Ellos le respondieron:
—Se parecían a ti. Todos parecían ser príncipes.
19 Gedeón exclamó:
—¡Eran mis hermanos, los hijos de mi propia madre! Les juro por Dios que, si los hubieran dejado vivir, yo no los mataría a ustedes dos ahora.
20 Enseguida Gedeón le ordenó a Jéter, su hijo mayor: «¡Vamos! ¡Mátalos!»
Pero Jéter no se animó a sacar su espada, porque era todavía muy joven. 21 Entonces Zébah y Salmuná le dijeron a Gedeón: «Si realmente eres tan valiente, ¡mátanos tú mismo!»
Entonces Gedeón se levantó y los mató. Luego les quitó a los camellos de Zébah y Salmuná los adornos que llevaban al cuello.
22 Después de eso los israelitas le dijeron a Gedeón:
—Queremos que tú y tus descendientes nos gobiernen, porque nos has salvado de los madianitas.
23 Gedeón les respondió:
—Ni mi hijo ni yo los gobernaremos. Quien los va a gobernar es Dios. 24 Pero una sola cosa les pido: que cada uno me entregue los anillos de la gente que ha capturado.
Y es que los madianitas, como otra gente que vivía en el desierto, usaban anillos de oro. 25 Así que los israelitas le respondieron:
—Con mucho gusto. Aquí están.
Y extendieron en el piso una capa donde cada uno echó un anillo de los que habían capturado. 26 El oro de los anillos que recibió Gedeón pesaba casi diecinueve kilos. Además, le entregaron adornos, joyas y telas finas que usaban los reyes madianitas, y los collares de sus camellos. 27 Con todo ese oro, Gedeón hizo una estatua y la colocó en Ofrá, su ciudad. Todos los israelitas le fueron infieles a Dios, porque iban a adorar esa estatua. Aun para Gedeón y su familia, la estatua resultó ser una trampa.
28 Así fue como Israel venció a los madianitas, los cuales nunca más recobraron su poder. Y mientras Gedeón vivió, hubo en esa región cuarenta años de paz.
Muerte de Gedeón
29 Gedeón se fue a vivir a su propio pueblo, 30 y allí tuvo muchos hijos con sus varias esposas. 31 Pero en Siquem tuvo otra mujer, de la cual nació un hijo a quien llamó Abimélec. 32 Cuando Gedeón murió, era ya muy anciano. Lo enterraron en la tumba de su padre, Joás, en Ofrá, ciudad de Abiézer.
33 Después de que murió Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a pecar contra Dios, pues adoraron a dioses falsos. Gideon Pursues Zebah and Zalmunna
8 Then the men of Ephraim said to him, “(A)What is this thing you have done to us, not calling us when you went to fight against Midian?” And they strongly contended with him. 2 But he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? 3 God has given the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, into your hands; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?” Then their [a]anger toward him subsided when he spoke this word.
4 Then Gideon and the 300 men who were with him came (B)to the Jordan and crossed over, weary yet pursuing. 5 And he said to the men of (C)Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who are following me, for they are weary, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” 6 But the princes of Succoth said, “[b](D)Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hands, that we should give bread to your army?” 7 And Gideon said, “Thus, (E)when Yahweh has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will [c]thrash your [d]bodies with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” 8 So he went up from there to [e](F)Penuel and spoke similarly to them; and the men of Penuel answered him just as the men of Succoth had answered. 9 So he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, “When I return safely, (G)I will tear down this tower.”
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their camps with them, about 15,000 men, all who were left of the entire camp of the sons of the east; (H)for the fallen were 120,000 men who drew the sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of those who dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah and struck the camp when the camp was [f]unsuspecting. 12 Then Zebah and Zalmunna fled. And he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he threw the whole camp into utter fright.
13 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle [g]by the ascent of Heres. 14 And he captured a youth from the men of Succoth and questioned him. So the youth wrote down for him the princes of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men. 15 Then he came to the men of Succoth and said, “Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you reproached me, saying, ‘[h](I)Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?’” 16 Then he took the elders of the city as well as thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he [i]taught the men of Succoth a lesson. 17 (J)And he tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.
18 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?” And they said, “They were like you, each one [j]resembling the son of a king.” 19 And he said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As Yahweh lives, if only you had let them live, I would not kill you.” 20 So he said to Jether his firstborn, “Rise, kill them.” But the youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid because he was still a youth. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Rise up yourself, and smite us; for as the man, so is his might.” (K)So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna and (L)took the crescent ornaments which were on their camels’ necks.
Gideon Makes an Ephod
22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, “Rule over us, both you and your son, also your son’s son, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” 23 But Gideon said to them, “I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; (M)Yahweh shall rule over you.” 24 Yet Gideon said to them, “I would [k]make one request of you, that each of you give me [l]an earring from his spoil.” (For they had gold earrings because they were (N)Ishmaelites.) 25 And they said, “We will surely give them.” So they spread out a garment, and every one of them threw an earring there from his spoil. 26 And the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the neck bands that were on their camels’ necks. 27 Then Gideon made it into (O)an ephod and placed it in his city, Ophrah, and all Israel played the harlot with it there, so that it became a snare to Gideon and his household. 28 So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they did not lift up their heads anymore. And the land was quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon.
The Death and Burial of Gideon
29 Then (P)Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. 30 Now Gideon had (Q)seventy sons who [m]were his direct descendants, for he had many wives. 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he [n]named him Abimelech. 32 Then Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 Then it happened, as soon as Gideon was dead, (R)that the sons of Israel turned back and played the harlot with the Baals and made (S)Baal-berith their god. 34 Thus the sons of Israel (T)did not remember Yahweh their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side; 35 (U)nor did they show lovingkindness to the household of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in accord with all the good that he had done to Israel.
