Gedeón captura a los reyes madianitas
8 Los de la tribu de Efraín se enojaron y discutieron con Gedeón porque él no los había mandado llamar cuando salió a pelear contra los madianitas. 2 Pero él les contestó:
—¿No se dan cuenta de que ustedes hicieron más aún de lo que yo hice? Lo poco que ustedes hicieron vale más que lo mucho que hicimos nosotros. 3 Dios les entregó a Oreb y a Zeeb, los jefes madianitas. ¿Qué hice yo que se pueda comparar con lo que ustedes hicieron?
Cuando los de Efraín oyeron estas palabras de Gedeón, se les pasó el enojo contra él.
4 Gedeón y sus trescientos hombres llegaron al Jordán y lo cruzaron, aunque estaban rendidos de cansancio por ir persiguiendo al enemigo. 5 En Sucot, Gedeón les pidió a los que allí vivían:
—Por favor, den algo de comer a los que vienen conmigo, porque están rendidos de cansancio. Andamos persiguiendo a los reyes madianitas Zébah y Salmuná.
6 Pero los jefes de Sucot le respondieron:
—¿Acaso ya has capturado a Zébah y Salmuná, para que alimentemos a tu ejército?
7 Y Gedeón les contestó:
—¡Después que el Señor me entregue a Zébah y Salmuná, regresaré y les desgarraré a ustedes la carne con espinas y zarzas del desierto!
8 De allí fue a Penuel, donde pidió lo mismo que en Sucot. Pero como los de Penuel le respondieron igual que los de Sucot, 9 Gedeón les dijo:
—¡Cuando yo regrese vencedor, echaré abajo esa torre!
10 Zébah y Salmuná estaban en Carcor con unos quince mil hombres, que era todo lo que quedaba del ejército del oriente, pues habían muerto ciento veinte mil de ellos. 11 Gedeón avanzó por el camino que bordea el desierto, al este de Nóbah y Jogbehá, y atacó su campamento cuando ellos menos lo esperaban. 12 Zébah y Salmuná salieron huyendo, pero Gedeón los persiguió y los capturó, y llenó de espanto a todo el ejército.
13 Cuando Gedeón regresaba de la batalla por el paso de Heres, 14 capturó a un joven de Sucot y lo interrogó; y aquel joven le dio por escrito los nombres de los setenta y siete jefes y ancianos de Sucot. 15 Entonces Gedeón fue a Sucot y les dijo a los de este pueblo:
—¿Recuerdan cómo se burlaron de mí por causa de Zébah y de Salmuná? ¿Recuerdan que les negaron pan a mis hombres, que estaban rendidos de cansancio, diciéndonos que todavía no los teníamos cautivos? ¡Pues aquí los tienen!
16 Entonces Gedeón tomó espinas y zarzas del desierto, y con ellas castigó a los ancianos de Sucot. 17 También echó abajo la torre de Penuel, y mató a la gente de esta ciudad. 18 Luego les preguntó a Zébah y a Salmuná:
—¿Cómo eran los hombres que ustedes mataron en Tabor?
Y ellos le contestaron:
—Se parecían a ti. Cada uno de ellos parecía un príncipe.
19 Entonces Gedeón gritó:
—¡Mis hermanos! ¡Mataron a mis propios hermanos! Tan cierto como que el Señor vive, que si ustedes no los hubieran matado, yo tampoco los mataría a ustedes ahora.
20 En seguida le ordenó a Jéter, su hijo mayor:
—¡Levántate y mátalos!
Pero Jéter era todavía muy joven, y no se atrevió a sacar su espada. 21 Entonces Zébah y Salmuná le dijeron a Gedeón:
—¡Pues mátanos tú! ¡Al hombre se le conoce por su valentía!
Gedeón se levantó y los mató, y tomó los adornos que llevaban al cuello los camellos de Zébah y Salmuná. 22 Entonces los israelitas le dijeron:
—Ya que tú nos has librado del poder de los madianitas, queremos que tú y tus descendientes nos gobiernen.
23 Pero Gedeón les contestó:
—Ni yo ni mi hijo los gobernaremos a ustedes. El Señor será quien los gobierne. 24 Lo que sí quiero es pedirles que me den los anillos que han capturado.
Esos anillos de oro los usaban los soldados enemigos, porque eran gente del desierto. 25 Los israelitas, tendiendo una capa en el suelo, echaron en ella los anillos que habían tomado, y le dijeron a Gedeón:
—Aquí los tienes.
26 Todo el oro de los anillos pesó casi diecinueve kilos, sin contar los adornos ni las joyas y telas de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián, ni los collares de sus camellos. 27 Con ese oro Gedeón hizo un efod, que puso en Ofrá, su ciudad, y todo Israel le fue infiel al Señor por causa del efod, el cual se volvió una trampa para Gedeón y su familia.
28 Así fue como los madianitas quedaron sometidos a Israel, y nunca más volvieron a levantar cabeza. Durante cuarenta años, mientras Gedeón vivió, hubo paz en la región.
Muerte de Gedeón
29-30 Jerubaal, o sea Gedeón, se fue a vivir a su propia casa, y tuvo setenta hijos, pues tenía muchas esposas. 31 Una concubina que él tenía en Siquem, también le dio un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Abimélec.
32 Gedeón murió ya entrado en años, y lo enterraron en la tumba de su padre Joás, en Ofrá, ciudad del clan de Abiézer.
33 Después que murió Gedeón, los israelitas volvieron a abandonar a Dios para adorar a las diferentes representaciones de Baal, y escogieron como su dios a Baal-berit. 34 Se olvidaron del Señor su Dios, que los había salvado de todos los enemigos que los rodeaban, 35 y no correspondieron con bondad a la familia de Jerubaal, o sea Gedeón, por todo lo bueno que él había hecho por ellos.

8 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?
3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.
12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.
22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.
27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.
34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

8 Bấy giờ người Ép-ra-im đến bắt bẻ Ghi-đê-ôn rằng: “Tại sao ông đối xử với chúng tôi như vậy? Tại sao khi đi đánh dân Ma-đi-an mà ông không cho gọi chúng tôi?” Họ đả kích Ghi-đê-ôn nặng nề. 2 Nhưng Ghi-đê-ôn đáp lời họ: “Những gì tôi làm có thể sánh được với anh em sao? Há chẳng phải nho mót của Ép-ra-im còn hơn cả một mùa nho của A-bi-ê-se sao? 3 Đức Chúa Trời đã phó vào tay anh em hai tướng lãnh của dân Ma-đi-an là Ô-rếp và Xê-ép, thì những gì tôi đã làm có thể sánh được với anh em sao?” Khi nghe ông nói thế, cơn giận của họ bèn dịu xuống. 4 Ghi-đê-ôn đến sông Giô-đanh và qua sông xong, ông và ba trăm người đi với ông đều mệt đuối nhưng họ vẫn cố sức truy đuổi. 5 Ghi-đê-ôn đến nói với dân Su-cốt rằng: “Xin các ông cho những người theo tôi ít bánh, vì họ kiệt sức quá rồi, và tôi đang truy kích Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na, là các vua của dân Ma-đi-an.” 6 Nhưng các quan chức của Su-cốt đáp: “Ông đã cầm chắc trong tay ông sinh mạng của Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na chưa mà chúng tôi phải lấy bánh cho binh lính ông ăn?” 7 Ghi-đê-ôn đáp: “Nếu vậy thì khi CHÚA đã phó Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na vào tay tôi, tôi sẽ dùng gai trong sa mạc và gai thạch nam mà xẻ thịt các người ra.” 8 Từ đó ông tiến lên Phê-nu-ên, và cũng hỏi dân Phê-nu-ên như vậy, nhưng họ cũng đáp lại với ông giống như dân Su-cốt đã đáp. 9 Cho nên ông nói với dân Phê-nu-ên rằng: “Khi tôi trở về trong chiến thắng, tôi sẽ phá tan cái tháp này.” 10 Bấy giờ Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na đang ở tại Cát-ca với khoảng mười lăm ngàn binh lính. Đó là quân số còn lại của đại quân các dân phương đông; vì một trăm hai mươi ngàn người cầm gươm đã ngã chết. 11 Ghi-đê-ôn đi lên theo ngả của dân du mục, về phía đông của Nô-bách và Giô-bê-ha, và tấn công vào đội quân trong khi họ không ngờ. 12 Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na liền chạy trốn; ông đuổi theo họ và bắt được hai vua của dân Ma-đi-an, là Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na, nên tàn quân liền rối loạn. 13 Ghi-đê-ôn con của Giô-ách từ chiến trường trở về, theo ngả đèo Hê-re. 14 Ông bắt được một cậu thiếu niên, là dân ở Su-cốt, và tra hỏi cậu ấy. Thật như CHÚA hằng sống, nếu các ngươi để cho họ còn sống thì ta sẽ không giết các ngươi đâu.” 20 Rồi ông bảo Giê-the, con trưởng nam ông: “Con hãy lại giết họ đi.” Nhưng cậu thiếu niên không dám rút gươm ra, vì cậu ấy sợ, bởi cậu còn niên thiếu. 21 Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na bèn nói: “Chính ngươi hãy lại giết chúng ta, vì người sao thì sức vậy.” Vậy Ghi-đê-ôn tiến đến và giết Xê-bách và Xanh-mu-na; rồi ông lấy những vật hình lưỡi liềm đeo nơi cổ các lạc đà của họ.
Ghi-đê-ôn Đúc Ê-phót
22 Bấy giờ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nói với Ghi-đê-ôn rằng: “Hãy cai trị chúng tôi, ông, con trai ông, và cháu của ông nữa. Vì ông đã giải thoát chúng tôi khỏi tay dân Ma-đi-an.” 23 Ghi-đê-ôn đáp lời họ: “Tôi sẽ không cai trị anh em, con trai tôi cũng sẽ không cai trị anh em. CHÚA sẽ cai trị anh em.” 24 Rồi Ghi-đê-ôn nói tiếp: “Tôi có một lời yêu cầu anh em. Xin mỗi người hãy cho tôi một vòng đeo tai mà anh em đã lấy làm chiến lợi phẩm.”[a] 25 Họ đáp: “Chúng tôi rất sẵn sàng cho ông.” Vậy họ trải một áo choàng ra, rồi mỗi người ném vào một vòng đeo tai mà họ đã lấy làm chiến lợi phẩm. 26 Số vàng của các vòng đeo tai mà Ghi-đê-ôn xin, cân được một ngàn bảy trăm sê-ken,[b] không kể những lưỡi liềm, những trân châu, những bộ vương phục màu tím của các vua Ma-đi-an, và những kiềng trang sức trên cổ lạc đà của họ. 27 Ghi-đê-ôn lấy những vàng đó đúc thành một ê-phót, rồi đặt nó trong thành của ông, tại Óp-ra. Toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phạm tội bất trung với Chúa bằng cách thờ phượng nó, và nó đã trở thành một cái bẫy cho Ghi-đê-ôn và gia đình ông. 28 Vậy dân Ma-đi-an bị khuất phục trước dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, và chúng chẳng ngất đầu lên được nữa. Trọn đời của Ghi-đê-ôn, xứ được bình yên trong bốn mươi năm.
Ghi-đê-ôn Qua Đời
29 Giê-ru-ba-anh, con trai của Giô-ách trở về sống trong nhà ông. 30 Ông có bảy mươi con trai; ấy là những con ruột của ông, vì ông có nhiều vợ. 31 Một tỳ thiếp của ông, quê ở Si-chem, cũng sinh cho ông một con trai, mà ông đặt tên là A-bi-mê-léc. 32 Rồi Ghi-đê-ôn, con trai của Giô-ách, qua đời trong tuổi già nua, và người ta chôn ông trong mộ của cha ông là Giô-ách tại Óp-ra, thuộc địa phận của gia tộc A-bi-ê-xê-rít.
33 Vừa khi Ghi-đê-ôn qua đời, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên liền sa ngã và phạm tội bất trung vì đi theo các thần Ba-anh. Họ tôn Ba-anh Bê-rít làm thần của họ. 34 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chẳng nhớ rằng CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của họ, là Đấng đã giải cứu họ khỏi tay quân thù tứ phía. 35 Họ cũng chẳng bày tỏ lòng trung thành với gia đình của Giê-ru-ba-anh, tức Ghi-đê-ôn, để đền đáp những điều tốt đẹp mà ông đã làm cho Y-sơ-ra-ên.

Zebah and Zalmunna
8 Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon,(A) “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?(B)”(C) And they challenged him vigorously.(D)
2 But he answered them, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer?(E) 3 God gave Oreb and Zeeb,(F) the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided.
4 Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan(G) and crossed it. 5 He said to the men of Sukkoth,(H) “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out,(I) and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna,(J) the kings of Midian.”
6 But the officials of Sukkoth(K) said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread(L) to your troops?”(M)
7 Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna(N) into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”
8 From there he went up to Peniel[a](O) and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had. 9 So he said to the men of Peniel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.”(P)
10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen.(Q) 11 Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah(R) and Jogbehah(S) and attacked the unsuspecting army. 12 Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.
13 Gideon son of Joash(T) then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres.(U) 14 He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth,(V) the elders(W) of the town. 15 Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?(X)’” 16 He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson(Y) by punishing them with desert thorns and briers. 17 He also pulled down the tower of Peniel(Z) and killed the men of the town.(AA)
18 Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?(AB)”
“Men like you,” they answered, “each one with the bearing of a prince.”
19 Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives,(AC) if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.” 20 Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.
21 Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Come, do it yourself. ‘As is the man, so is his strength.’” So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments(AD) off their camels’ necks.
Gideon’s Ephod
22 The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”
23 But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule(AE) over you.” 24 And he said, “I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring(AF) from your share of the plunder.(AG)” (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites(AH) to wear gold earrings.)
25 They answered, “We’ll be glad to give them.” So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it. 26 The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,[b] not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains(AI) that were on their camels’ necks. 27 Gideon made the gold into an ephod,(AJ) which he placed in Ophrah,(AK) his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare(AL) to Gideon and his family.(AM)
Gideon’s Death
28 Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head(AN) again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace(AO) forty years.
29 Jerub-Baal(AP) son of Joash(AQ) went back home to live. 30 He had seventy sons(AR) of his own, for he had many wives. 31 His concubine,(AS) who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek.(AT) 32 Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age(AU) and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals.(AV) They set up Baal-Berith(AW) as their god(AX) 34 and did not remember(AY) the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35 They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal(AZ) (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.(BA)
