Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Gedeón, también llamado Yerubaal, se levantó muy de mañana y, junto con toda su gente, acampó cerca del manantial de Jarod. El campamento de los madianitas estaba al norte, en el valle, más allá del collado de More.
2 El Señor le dijo a Gedeón:
«Es mucha la gente que viene contigo. No quiero que vayan a sentirse orgullosos cuando derroten a los madianitas, y que se pongan en mi contra y digan que se salvaron por su propia fuerza. 3 Así que habla fuerte para que el pueblo escuche, y diles que quien tenga miedo, que se levante y regrese a su casa.»(A)
Y desde el monte de Galaad se regresaron veintidós mil hombres, y sólo se quedaron diez mil. 4 Pero el Señor volvió a decir:
«Todavía es mucha gente. Llévalos al río, para que allí los ponga a prueba. Si yo te digo: “Éste puede acompañarte”, irá contigo; pero si te digo: “Éste no te acompañará”, entonces no irá contigo.»
5 Gedeón llevó entonces a su gente al río, y allí el Señor le dijo:
«Pon aparte a todo aquel que beba agua como los perros, es decir, lamiéndola, y aparta también a todo el que se arrodille para beber.»
6 Los que se llevaron el agua a la boca con la mano y la lamieron fueron trescientos hombres; el resto de la gente se arrodilló para beber. 7 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Gedeón:
«Con estos trescientos hombres que lamieron el agua los voy a salvar. Entregaré a los madianitas en tus manos. El resto de la gente puede volverse a casa.»
8 Se prepararon provisiones y trompetas para la gente, y a los demás Gedeón los envió de regreso a su casa; sólo retuvo a los trescientos hombres. El campamento de Madián estaba en el valle. 9 Y aquella noche el Señor le dijo a Gedeón:
«Levántate y ataca el campamento madianita, porque yo los he entregado en tus manos. 10 Si tienes miedo de ir, que te acompañe Fura, tu criado. 11 En cuanto oigas lo que dicen los madianitas, ármate de valor y atácalos.»
Acompañado de Fura, su criado, Gedeón llegó hasta los puestos avanzados de la gente armada que estaba en el campamento. 12 Los madianitas, los amalecitas y los hijos del oriente se habían extendido por el valle como una plaga de langostas. Sus camellos eran tantos como la arena del mar. 13 Cuando Gedeón llegó al campamento, un hombre le contaba a su compañero lo que había soñado. Le decía: «Tuve un sueño, en el que veía que un pan de cebada venía rodando hasta el campamento de Madián, y cuando llegó, golpeó tan fuerte la tienda de campaña, que la derribó.» 14 Y su compañero le respondió: «Esto no es sino la espada de Gedeón hijo de Joás, el israelita. ¡Dios ha puesto en sus manos a los madianitas y a todo su campamento!»
15 Al oír Gedeón el sueño y su interpretación, adoró al Señor; luego regresó a su campamento, y dijo:
«¡Arriba todo el mundo! ¡El Señor ha puesto a los madianitas en nuestras manos!»
16 Dividió entonces los trescientos hombres en tres grupos, y a cada uno le dio una trompeta y un cántaro vacío, y una tea encendida para ponerla dentro del cántaro. 17 Y les dijo:
«Mírenme, y hagan lo que voy a hacer cuando llegue al extremo del campamento. 18 Cuando yo toque la trompeta, junto con los que me acompañan, también ustedes tocarán las suyas alrededor del campamento, y gritarán: “¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!”»
19 Gedeón y los cien hombres que iban con él llegaron al extremo del campamento, en el momento en que ocurría el cambio de centinelas de la primera guardia de la medianoche, y en ese momento tocaron las trompetas y quebraron los cántaros. 20 Los tres grupos hicieron lo mismo: tocaron sus trompetas y quebraron los cántaros; con la mano izquierda tomaron las teas y con la derecha las trompetas, mientras gritaban: «¡Por la espada del Señor y de Gedeón!» 21 Y cada uno permaneció firme en su puesto, rodeando el campamento. Entonces el ejército enemigo se espantó y, dando gritos, se echó a correr. 22 Mientras los trescientos hombres tocaban las trompetas, fue tal la confusión que el Señor provocó en el campamento de los madianitas, que se mataban entre sí con sus espadas. El ejército huyó hasta Bet Sitá, y luego hacia Sererá, que es la frontera de Abel Meholá en Tabat. 23 Entonces todos los israelitas de las tribus de Neftalí, Aser y Manasés se juntaron y fueron en persecusión de los madianitas.
24 Gedeón envió también mensajeros por todo el monte de Efraín, para que les dijeran: «Bajen y enfréntense a los madianitas. Tomen los vados de Bet Bará y del Jordán antes de que ellos lleguen.» Entonces los efraimitas se reunieron y tomaron los vados de Bet Bará y del Jordán, 25 y capturaron a Oreb y Zeeb, que eran los dos príncipes de los madianitas; a Oreb lo mataron en la peña de Oreb, y a Zeeb en el lagar de Zeeb, y después de perseguir a los madianitas llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)

Gideon’s Valiant Three Hundred
7 Then (A)Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.
2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel (B)claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, (C)‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, (D)“By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his [a]place.” 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
9 It happened on the same (E)night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, 11 and you shall (F)hear what they say; and afterward [b]your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, (G)all the people of the East, were lying in the valley (H)as numerous as locusts; and their camels were [c]without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.
13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”
14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand (I)God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”
15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” 16 Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’ ”
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And (J)every man stood in his place all around the camp; (K)and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred (L)blew the trumpets, (M)the Lord set (N)every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to [d]Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of (O)Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered together from (P)Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the (Q)mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and (R)seized the watering places as far as (S)Beth Barah and the Jordan. 25 And they captured (T)two princes of the Midianites, (U)Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the (V)other side of the Jordan.

15 As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.” 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with (N)torches inside the jars. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, (O)‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
Gideon Defeats Midian
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. (P)And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, (Q)and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. 22 (R)When they blew the 300 trumpets, (S)the Lord set (T)every man's sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[a] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.
24 (U)Gideon sent messengers throughout (V)all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as (W)Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. 25 And they captured (X)the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb (Y)at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon (Z)across the Jordan.
