Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Yerubaal (el otro nombre de Gedeón) y sus hombres se levantaron temprano y avanzaron hasta los manantiales de Arod. El ejército madianita estaba acampado al norte de ellos, en el valle cerca de la colina de Moré.
2 El Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Los que están contigo son muchos. No puedo permitir que todos se enfrenten a los madianitas, porque entonces el pueblo de Israel se jactará delante de mí de que se han salvado por su propia fortaleza. 3 Haz que todos los que tengan miedo y tiemblen vuelvan a sus casas».
Veintidós mil se fueron. Solamente se quedaron diez mil.
4 Pero el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Todavía son demasiados. Llévalos al manantial y yo te mostraré cuales irán y cuales no».
5 Gedeón los reunió junto a las aguas. Allí el Señor le dijo: «Divídelos en dos grupos según la forma en que beban. En el primer grupo estarán todos los que tomen el agua en sus manos y se la lleven a la boca y la laman como los perros. En el segundo grupo estarán los que se arrodillen y beban poniendo sus bocas en la corriente».
6 Solamente trescientos hombres bebieron de sus manos. Todos los demás pusieron la boca en el arroyo. 7 «Yo venceré a los madianitas con estos trescientos hombres —dijo el Señor a Gedeón—; envía a los demás a sus casas».
8-9 Después que Gedeón reunió todos los jarrones y trompetas del pueblo que tenían entre ellos, envió a todos los hombres a sus casas, excepto los trescientos.
Durante la noche, con los madianitas acampados en el valle que estaba debajo, el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Levántate, toma a tus soldados y ataca a los madianitas, porque yo haré que los derrotes. 10 Sin embargo, si tienes miedo, primero desciende solo al campamento y lleva contigo a tu siervo Furá si quieres 11 y escucha lo que están diciendo allí. Te sentirás con más fuerzas para atacar al campamento».
Entonces fue con Furá y se arrastró por la oscuridad hasta las posiciones del enemigo. 12 Los numerosos ejércitos de Madián, Amalec y otras naciones del oriente que se les habían unido estaban esparcidos a través del valle, numerosos como langostas, como la arena de la playa, y tenían tantos camellos que era difícil de contar. 13 Gedeón se arrastró hasta una de las tiendas, justo en el momento en que el hombre que dormía adentro había despertado de una pesadilla y se la contaba a su compañero de tienda.
―Tuve un sueño extraño —le estaba diciendo—. Había un gran pan de cebada que vino rodando contra nuestro campamento. Golpeó sobre nuestra tienda y la derribó.
14 El otro soldado contestó:
―Tu sueño sólo puede significar una cosa: Gedeón, el hijo de Joás, el israelita, va a venir y masacrará a todas las fuerzas aliadas de Madián.
15 Cuando Gedeón escuchó el sueño y su interpretación, se puso en pie allí mismo para adorar al Señor. Luego regresó junto a sus hombres y gritó:
―Levántense, que el Señor va a usarnos para vencer a los madianitas.
16 Dividió a los trescientos hombres en tres grupos. Le dio a cada hombre una trompeta y un jarrón con una antorcha encendida dentro de él. 17 Entonces les expuso su plan. «Cuando lleguemos junto al campamento —les dijo—, hagan lo que yo haga. 18 Tan pronto como los hombres de mi grupo y yo hagamos sonar las trompetas, ustedes harán sonar las de ustedes por todos los costados del campamento y gritarán: “¡Peleamos por el Señor y por Gedeón!”».
19 Fue justamente después de medianoche, cuando se produjo el cambio de guardias, que Gedeón y los cien hombres suyos llegaron hasta las inmediaciones del campo de Madián.
Repentinamente hicieron sonar sus trompetas y rompieron los jarrones para que las antorchas brillaran en la noche. 20 Inmediatamente los demás hombres hicieron lo mismo, y tocando las trompetas que tenían en la mano derecha y con las antorchas encendidas en sus manos izquierdas gritaban: «¡Peleamos por el Señor y por Gedeón!».
21 Y se mantuvieron firmes y observaron cómo todo aquel enorme ejército comenzó a correr de un lado a otro, gritando y huyendo presa del pánico. 22 En la confusión el Señor hizo que los soldados enemigos comenzaran a pelear entre sí y a matarse unos a otros de uno al otro lado del campamento, y que huyeran en la noche a lugares tan lejanos como Bet Sitá, cerca de Zererá, y hasta la frontera de Abel Mejolá, cerca de Tabat.
23 Entonces Gedeón hizo llamar a los hombres de Neftalí, Aser y Manasés y les dijo que vinieran a fin de perseguir y destruir a los madianitas que huían. 24 Gedeón también envió mensajeros por toda la región montañosa de Efraín invitando a las tropas a que se apoderaran de los vados del Jordán en Bet Bará para impedir que los madianitas escaparan a través de ellos. 25 Oreb y Zeb, los dos generales de Madián, fueron capturados. Oreb fue muerto en la roca que lleva su nombre y Zeb, en el lagar de Zeb, como se le llama actualmente. Y los israelitas tomaron las cabezas de Oreb y Zeb, y cruzaron el Jordán para llevárselas a Gedeón.

Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Gedeón, a quien ahora llamaban Jerubaal, y todos los que estaban con él, se levantaron de madrugada y fueron a acampar junto al manantial de Harod. El campamento de los madianitas les quedaba entonces al norte, en el valle que está al pie del monte de Moré.
2 El Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Traes tanta gente contigo que si hago que los israelitas derroten a los madianitas, van a alardear ante mí creyendo que se han salvado ellos mismos. 3 Por eso, dile a la gente que cualquiera que tenga miedo puede irse a su casa.»
De este modo Gedeón los puso a prueba, y se fueron veintidós mil hombres, quedándose diez mil. 4 Pero el Señor insistió: «Son muchos todavía. Llévalos a tomar agua, y allí yo los pondré a prueba y te diré quiénes irán contigo y quiénes no.»
5 Gedeón llevó entonces a la gente a tomar agua, y el Señor le dijo: «Aparta a los que beban agua en sus manos, lamiéndola como perros, de aquellos que se arrodillen para beber.»
6 Los que bebieron agua llevándosela de las manos a la boca y lamiéndola como perros fueron trescientos. Todos los demás se arrodillaron para beber. 7 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Con estos trescientos hombres voy a salvarlos a ustedes, y derrotaré a los madianitas. Todos los demás pueden irse.»
8 Gedeón mandó entonces que todos los demás regresaran a sus tiendas; pero antes de que se fueran les recogió sus cántaros y sus cuernos de carnero. Sólo se quedó con los trescientos hombres escogidos, acampando más arriba de los madianitas, que estaban en el valle.
9 Aquella noche el Señor le ordenó a Gedeón: «Levántate y baja a atacar a los madianitas, pues los voy a entregar en tus manos. 10 Pero si tienes miedo de atacarlos, baja antes al campamento con Purá, tu criado, 11 y escucha lo que digan. Después te sentirás con más ánimo para atacarlos.»
Entonces Gedeón bajó con Purá, su criado, hasta los puestos avanzados del campamento enemigo. 12 Los madianitas, los amalecitas y la gente del oriente se habían esparcido por el valle como una plaga de langostas. Tenían tantos camellos como arena hay a la orilla del mar. 13 Al acercarse Gedeón al campamento enemigo, oyó que un soldado le contaba a otro un sueño que había tenido. Le decía:
—Soñé que un pan de cebada venía rodando hasta nuestro campamento, y que al chocar contra una tienda la hacía caer.
14 Y su compañero le contestó:
—Eso no es otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el israelita. Dios va a entregar en manos de Gedeón a los madianitas y a todo su campamento.
15 Al oír cómo se había contado e interpretado el sueño, Gedeón adoró al Señor. Después volvió al campamento israelita y ordenó:
—¡Arriba, que el Señor va a entregarnos el campamento madianita!
16 En seguida dividió sus trescientos hombres en tres grupos, y les dio cuernos de carnero a todos y unos cántaros vacíos que llevaban dentro antorchas encendidas. 17 Y les dijo:
—Cuando llegue yo al otro lado del campamento enemigo, fíjense en mí y hagan lo mismo que me vean hacer. 18 Cuando yo y los que van conmigo toquemos el cuerno, tóquenlo ustedes también alrededor de todo el campamento, y griten: “¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!”
19 Así pues, Gedeón y sus cien hombres llegaron al otro lado del campamento cuando estaba por comenzar el turno de guardia de medianoche. Entonces tocaron los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en las manos, 20 y los tres grupos tocaron al mismo tiempo los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros. En la mano izquierda llevaban las antorchas encendidas, y los cuernos de carnero en la derecha, y gritaban: «¡Guerra! ¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!» 21 Y como los israelitas se quedaron quietos en sus puestos alrededor del campamento, y todos en el ejército madianita gritaban y salían huyendo 22 mientras los trescientos israelitas seguían tocando los cuernos de carnero, el Señor hizo que los madianitas lucharan entre sí, y que salieran huyendo hasta Bet-sitá, camino de Sererá, y hasta la frontera de Abel-meholá, junto a Tabat.
23 Entonces se llamó a los israelitas de las tribus de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés, para que persiguieran a los madianitas. 24 Gedeón mandó mensajeros por los montes de Efraín, ordenando que los hombres de esta tribu bajaran a luchar contra los madianitas y ocuparan los lugares por donde se podía cruzar el río en Bet-bará y en el Jordán, antes de que ellos llegaran. Los de Efraín cumplieron estas órdenes, 25 y además capturaron a dos jefes madianitas llamados Oreb y Zeeb. A Oreb lo mataron en la peña que ahora se conoce como Peña de Oreb. A Zeeb lo mataron en el lugar que lleva su nombre, y que era donde se pisaba la uva para hacer vino. Y después de perseguir a los madianitas, llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán.

Gideon’s Valiant Three Hundred
7 Then (A)Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.
2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel (B)claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, (C)‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, (D)“By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his [a]place.” 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
9 It happened on the same (E)night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, 11 and you shall (F)hear what they say; and afterward [b]your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, (G)all the people of the East, were lying in the valley (H)as numerous as locusts; and their camels were [c]without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.
13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”
14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand (I)God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”
15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” 16 Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’ ”
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And (J)every man stood in his place all around the camp; (K)and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred (L)blew the trumpets, (M)the Lord set (N)every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to [d]Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of (O)Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered together from (P)Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the (Q)mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and (R)seized the watering places as far as (S)Beth Barah and the Jordan. 25 And they captured (T)two princes of the Midianites, (U)Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the (V)other side of the Jordan.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)
