Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Gedeón, a quien ahora llamaban Jerubaal, y todos los que estaban con él, se levantaron de madrugada y fueron a acampar junto al manantial de Harod. El campamento de los madianitas les quedaba entonces al norte, en el valle que está al pie del monte de Moré.
2 El Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Traes tanta gente contigo que si hago que los israelitas derroten a los madianitas, van a alardear ante mí creyendo que se han salvado ellos mismos. 3 Por eso, dile a la gente que cualquiera que tenga miedo puede irse a su casa.»
De este modo Gedeón los puso a prueba, y se fueron veintidós mil hombres, quedándose diez mil. 4 Pero el Señor insistió: «Son muchos todavía. Llévalos a tomar agua, y allí yo los pondré a prueba y te diré quiénes irán contigo y quiénes no.»
5 Gedeón llevó entonces a la gente a tomar agua, y el Señor le dijo: «Aparta a los que beban agua en sus manos, lamiéndola como perros, de aquellos que se arrodillen para beber.»
6 Los que bebieron agua llevándosela de las manos a la boca y lamiéndola como perros fueron trescientos. Todos los demás se arrodillaron para beber. 7 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Con estos trescientos hombres voy a salvarlos a ustedes, y derrotaré a los madianitas. Todos los demás pueden irse.»
8 Gedeón mandó entonces que todos los demás regresaran a sus tiendas; pero antes de que se fueran les recogió sus cántaros y sus cuernos de carnero. Sólo se quedó con los trescientos hombres escogidos, acampando más arriba de los madianitas, que estaban en el valle.
9 Aquella noche el Señor le ordenó a Gedeón: «Levántate y baja a atacar a los madianitas, pues los voy a entregar en tus manos. 10 Pero si tienes miedo de atacarlos, baja antes al campamento con Purá, tu criado, 11 y escucha lo que digan. Después te sentirás con más ánimo para atacarlos.»
Entonces Gedeón bajó con Purá, su criado, hasta los puestos avanzados del campamento enemigo. 12 Los madianitas, los amalecitas y la gente del oriente se habían esparcido por el valle como una plaga de langostas. Tenían tantos camellos como arena hay a la orilla del mar. 13 Al acercarse Gedeón al campamento enemigo, oyó que un soldado le contaba a otro un sueño que había tenido. Le decía:
—Soñé que un pan de cebada venía rodando hasta nuestro campamento, y que al chocar contra una tienda la hacía caer.
14 Y su compañero le contestó:
—Eso no es otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el israelita. Dios va a entregar en manos de Gedeón a los madianitas y a todo su campamento.
15 Al oír cómo se había contado e interpretado el sueño, Gedeón adoró al Señor. Después volvió al campamento israelita y ordenó:
—¡Arriba, que el Señor va a entregarnos el campamento madianita!
16 En seguida dividió sus trescientos hombres en tres grupos, y les dio cuernos de carnero a todos y unos cántaros vacíos que llevaban dentro antorchas encendidas. 17 Y les dijo:
—Cuando llegue yo al otro lado del campamento enemigo, fíjense en mí y hagan lo mismo que me vean hacer. 18 Cuando yo y los que van conmigo toquemos el cuerno, tóquenlo ustedes también alrededor de todo el campamento, y griten: “¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!”
19 Así pues, Gedeón y sus cien hombres llegaron al otro lado del campamento cuando estaba por comenzar el turno de guardia de medianoche. Entonces tocaron los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en las manos, 20 y los tres grupos tocaron al mismo tiempo los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros. En la mano izquierda llevaban las antorchas encendidas, y los cuernos de carnero en la derecha, y gritaban: «¡Guerra! ¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!» 21 Y como los israelitas se quedaron quietos en sus puestos alrededor del campamento, y todos en el ejército madianita gritaban y salían huyendo 22 mientras los trescientos israelitas seguían tocando los cuernos de carnero, el Señor hizo que los madianitas lucharan entre sí, y que salieran huyendo hasta Bet-sitá, camino de Sererá, y hasta la frontera de Abel-meholá, junto a Tabat.
23 Entonces se llamó a los israelitas de las tribus de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés, para que persiguieran a los madianitas. 24 Gedeón mandó mensajeros por los montes de Efraín, ordenando que los hombres de esta tribu bajaran a luchar contra los madianitas y ocuparan los lugares por donde se podía cruzar el río en Bet-bará y en el Jordán, antes de que ellos llegaran. Los de Efraín cumplieron estas órdenes, 25 y además capturaron a dos jefes madianitas llamados Oreb y Zeeb. A Oreb lo mataron en la peña que ahora se conoce como Peña de Oreb. A Zeeb lo mataron en el lugar que lleva su nombre, y que era donde se pisaba la uva para hacer vino. Y después de perseguir a los madianitas, llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán.

2 Domnul i-a zis lui Ghedeon: „Oamenii care sunt cu tine sunt prea mulţi pentru ca Eu să dau pe Midian în mâinile lor, fiindcă s-ar putea ca Israel să se mândrească faţă de Mine şi să zică că s-a eliberat singur. 3 De aceea vesteşte acum în auzul oamenilor şi zi-le: «Cine este fricos şi se teme să se întoarcă şi să se depărteze de muntele Ghilad!»“ Douăzeci şi două de mii de oameni s-au întors şi au mai rămas zece mii.
4 Domnul i-a zis din nou lui Ghedeon: „Oamenii sunt încă prea mulţi! Coboară-i la ape şi ţi-i voi alege acolo! Acela despre care îţi voi spune să meargă cu tine, va merge cu tine şi toţi aceia despre care îţi voi spune să nu meargă cu tine, nu vor merge cu tine!“
5 Ghedeon i-a dus pe oameni la apă şi Domnul i-a zis: „Pe cei care vor lipăi apa cu limba[a] aşa cum lipăie câinele, să-i separi de toţi aceia care se vor pleca pe genunchi să bea apă!“ 6 Numărul celor care au lipăit apa cu limba a fost de trei sute de bărbaţi. Restul poporului s-a plecat pe genunchi să bea apă.
7 Domnul i-a zis lui Ghedeon: „Cu cei trei sute de bărbaţi care au lipăit din apă cum lipăie câinele, vă voi elibera şi-i voi da pe midianiţi în mâna ta! Toţi ceilalţi oameni să plece acasă!“ 8 După ce poporul şi-a luat proviziile şi trâmbiţele în mâini, Ghedeon i-a trimis pe toţi israeliţii acasă, iar el împreună cu cei trei sute de oameni s-au îmbărbătat. Tabăra lui Midian era în vale, dedesubt de el.
9 Chiar în noaptea aceea, Domnul i-a zis lui Ghedeon: „Scoală-te şi atacă tabăra căci am dat-o în mâinile tale! 10 Dacă ţi-e frică s-o ataci, du-te cu Pura, slujitorul tău! 11 Să asculţi ce vor vorbi, fiindcă după aceea ţi se vor întări mâinile şi vei putea să ataci tabăra!“ Atunci el şi cu Pura, slujitorul lui, au înaintat până la avanpostul străjerilor care erau în tabără. 12 Midianiţii, amalekiţii şi popoarele din răsărit erau răspândiţi în vale, ca o mulţime de lăcuste; cămilele lor erau fără număr, ca nisipul de pe ţărmul mării. 13 Când a sosit Ghedeon, a văzut acolo un om care îi povestea prietenului său un vis. El zicea:
– Am avut un vis: se făcea că o turtă de orz se rostogolea în tabăra midianiţilor. A ajuns până la cort, l-a izbit şi acesta a căzut răsturnându-se cu susul în jos! Astfel cortul a fost distrus!
14 Camaradul lui i-a răspuns:
– Aceasta nu este altceva decât sabia lui Ghedeon, fiul israelitului Ioaş! Dumnezeu i-a dat în mâna lui pe midianiţi cu toată oştirea lor!
15 După ce a auzit Ghedeon povestirea visului şi interpretarea lui, s-a închinat şi s-a întors în tabăra lui Israel. El le-a zis: „Sculaţi-vă, căci Domnul a dat în mâinile voastre oştirea lui Midian!“ 16 A împărţit cei trei sute de oameni în trei cete, a dat fiecăruia câte o trâmbiţă şi nişte ulcioare goale cu torţe în ele, 17 şi le-a zis: „Să vă uitaţi la mine şi să faceţi la fel! Când am să ajung la capătul taberei, să faceţi aşa cum voi face eu! 18 Când eu şi cei care vor fi cu mine vom suna din trâmbiţe, atunci să sunaţi şi voi din trâmbiţele voastre de jur împrejurul întregii tabere şi să ziceţi: «Pentru Domnul şi pentru Ghedeon!»“
19 Ghedeon şi cei o sută de bărbaţi care erau cu el au ajuns la capătul taberei la începutul străjii de la miezul nopţii[b], chiar când se schimbau străjerii. Şi au început să sune din trâmbiţe şi să spargă ulcioarele pe care le aveau în mâini. 20 Toate cele trei cete au sunat din trâmbiţe şi au spart ulcioarele; au apucat de torţe cu mâna stângă, în timp ce în mâna dreaptă ţineau trâmbiţele ca să sune. Apoi au strigat: „Sabia Domnului şi sabia lui Ghedeon!“ 21 Fiecare rămăsese la locul lui în jurul taberei. Şi toţi cei din tabără au început să alerge, să ţipe şi să fugă.
22 Când cei trei sute de bărbaţi au sunat din trâmbiţe, Domnul a făcut ca aliaţii adunaţi în tabără să întoarcă sabia unii împotriva altora. Oştirea a fugit către Bet-Şita, înspre Ţerera, lângă hotarul de la Abel-Mehola, în apropiere de Tabat. 23 Israeliţii din Neftali, din Aşer şi din întregul Manase au fost chemaţi să-i urmărească pe midianiţi.
24 Ghedeon a trimis soli prin toată regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim, spunând: „Coborâţi, urmăriţi-i pe midianiţi şi capturaţi-i la apele de lângă Bet-Bara şi la Iordan!“ Şi toţi efraimiţii s-au strâns şi au pus stăpânire pe apele de lângă Bet-Bara şi pe Iordan. 25 Le-au prins pe cele două căpetenii ale midianiţilor, pe Oreb şi pe Zeeb. Pe Oreb l-au omorât la Ţur-Oreb[c], iar pe Zeeb l-au omorât la Iecheb-Zeeb[d]. După ce i-au urmărit pe midianiţi, i-au adus lui Ghedeon, dincolo de Iordan, capetele lui Oreb şi Zeeb.

7 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.
25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.
