Gedeón derrota a los madianitas
7 Gedeón, a quien ahora llamaban Jerubaal, y todos los que estaban con él, se levantaron de madrugada y fueron a acampar junto al manantial de Harod. El campamento de los madianitas les quedaba entonces al norte, en el valle que está al pie del monte de Moré.
2 El Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Traes tanta gente contigo que si hago que los israelitas derroten a los madianitas, van a alardear ante mí creyendo que se han salvado ellos mismos. 3 Por eso, dile a la gente que cualquiera que tenga miedo puede irse a su casa.»
De este modo Gedeón los puso a prueba, y se fueron veintidós mil hombres, quedándose diez mil. 4 Pero el Señor insistió: «Son muchos todavía. Llévalos a tomar agua, y allí yo los pondré a prueba y te diré quiénes irán contigo y quiénes no.»
5 Gedeón llevó entonces a la gente a tomar agua, y el Señor le dijo: «Aparta a los que beban agua en sus manos, lamiéndola como perros, de aquellos que se arrodillen para beber.»
6 Los que bebieron agua llevándosela de las manos a la boca y lamiéndola como perros fueron trescientos. Todos los demás se arrodillaron para beber. 7 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Gedeón: «Con estos trescientos hombres voy a salvarlos a ustedes, y derrotaré a los madianitas. Todos los demás pueden irse.»
8 Gedeón mandó entonces que todos los demás regresaran a sus tiendas; pero antes de que se fueran les recogió sus cántaros y sus cuernos de carnero. Sólo se quedó con los trescientos hombres escogidos, acampando más arriba de los madianitas, que estaban en el valle.
9 Aquella noche el Señor le ordenó a Gedeón: «Levántate y baja a atacar a los madianitas, pues los voy a entregar en tus manos. 10 Pero si tienes miedo de atacarlos, baja antes al campamento con Purá, tu criado, 11 y escucha lo que digan. Después te sentirás con más ánimo para atacarlos.»
Entonces Gedeón bajó con Purá, su criado, hasta los puestos avanzados del campamento enemigo. 12 Los madianitas, los amalecitas y la gente del oriente se habían esparcido por el valle como una plaga de langostas. Tenían tantos camellos como arena hay a la orilla del mar. 13 Al acercarse Gedeón al campamento enemigo, oyó que un soldado le contaba a otro un sueño que había tenido. Le decía:
—Soñé que un pan de cebada venía rodando hasta nuestro campamento, y que al chocar contra una tienda la hacía caer.
14 Y su compañero le contestó:
—Eso no es otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón, hijo de Joás, el israelita. Dios va a entregar en manos de Gedeón a los madianitas y a todo su campamento.
15 Al oír cómo se había contado e interpretado el sueño, Gedeón adoró al Señor. Después volvió al campamento israelita y ordenó:
—¡Arriba, que el Señor va a entregarnos el campamento madianita!
16 En seguida dividió sus trescientos hombres en tres grupos, y les dio cuernos de carnero a todos y unos cántaros vacíos que llevaban dentro antorchas encendidas. 17 Y les dijo:
—Cuando llegue yo al otro lado del campamento enemigo, fíjense en mí y hagan lo mismo que me vean hacer. 18 Cuando yo y los que van conmigo toquemos el cuerno, tóquenlo ustedes también alrededor de todo el campamento, y griten: “¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!”
19 Así pues, Gedeón y sus cien hombres llegaron al otro lado del campamento cuando estaba por comenzar el turno de guardia de medianoche. Entonces tocaron los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros que llevaban en las manos, 20 y los tres grupos tocaron al mismo tiempo los cuernos de carnero y rompieron los cántaros. En la mano izquierda llevaban las antorchas encendidas, y los cuernos de carnero en la derecha, y gritaban: «¡Guerra! ¡Por el Señor y por Gedeón!» 21 Y como los israelitas se quedaron quietos en sus puestos alrededor del campamento, y todos en el ejército madianita gritaban y salían huyendo 22 mientras los trescientos israelitas seguían tocando los cuernos de carnero, el Señor hizo que los madianitas lucharan entre sí, y que salieran huyendo hasta Bet-sitá, camino de Sererá, y hasta la frontera de Abel-meholá, junto a Tabat.
23 Entonces se llamó a los israelitas de las tribus de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés, para que persiguieran a los madianitas. 24 Gedeón mandó mensajeros por los montes de Efraín, ordenando que los hombres de esta tribu bajaran a luchar contra los madianitas y ocuparan los lugares por donde se podía cruzar el río en Bet-bará y en el Jordán, antes de que ellos llegaran. Los de Efraín cumplieron estas órdenes, 25 y además capturaron a dos jefes madianitas llamados Oreb y Zeeb. A Oreb lo mataron en la peña que ahora se conoce como Peña de Oreb. A Zeeb lo mataron en el lugar que lleva su nombre, y que era donde se pisaba la uva para hacer vino. Y después de perseguir a los madianitas, llevaron las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb a Gedeón, que estaba al otro lado del Jordán.

7 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.
25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

Gideon's Three Hundred Men
7 Then (A)Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside (B)the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, (C)by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, (D)lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, (E)‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained.
4 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. 7 And the Lord said to Gideon, (F)“With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” 8 So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him (G)in the valley.
9 That same (H)night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, (I)for I have given it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. 11 (J)And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” (K)Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and (L)all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, (M)as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”
15 As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.” 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with (N)torches inside the jars. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, (O)‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
Gideon Defeats Midian
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. (P)And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, (Q)and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. 22 (R)When they blew the 300 trumpets, (S)the Lord set (T)every man's sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[a] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.
24 (U)Gideon sent messengers throughout (V)all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as (W)Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. 25 And they captured (X)the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb (Y)at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon (Z)across the Jordan.

7 Sáng hôm sau, Giê-ru-ba-anh[a] cùng tất cả quân binh dậy sớm và đến hạ trại bên suối Ha-rốt; còn trại của dân Ma-đi-an thì nằm trong thung lũng, về phía bắc của họ, dưới chân đồi Mô-rê.
2 CHÚA phán với Ghi-đê-ôn rằng: “Đạo binh theo ngươi đông quá. Nếu Ta phó dân Ma-đi-an vào tay họ, thì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ tự phụ mà nói rằng: ‘Chính tay ta đã tự giải thoát lấy ta.’ 3 Vậy bây giờ ngươi hãy truyền lệnh trong đạo binh rằng: ‘Ai cảm thấy run sợ và kinh hãi, thì hãy rời khỏi núi Ga-la-át mà trở về nhà đi.’ ” Thế là có hai mươi hai ngàn người ra về, chỉ còn mười ngàn người ở lại.
4 CHÚA lại phán với Ghi-đê-ôn: “Đạo binh hãy còn đông quá. Hãy bảo họ xuống uống nước, rồi tại đó Ta sẽ lựa ra cho ngươi. Khi Ta phán: ‘Kẻ này được đi với ngươi,’ thì kẻ ấy sẽ đi với ngươi; và khi Ta phán: ‘Kẻ này không được đi với ngươi,’ thì kẻ ấy sẽ không được đi với ngươi.”
5 Vậy, ông truyền cho đạo binh xuống uống nước; và CHÚA phán với Ghi-đê-ôn rằng: “Tất cả những kẻ dùng lưỡi liếm nước như chó uống nước, thì ngươi hãy để họ ra một bên. Còn những ai cúi xuống uống nước, nhưng lấy tay bụm mà đưa lên miệng, thì ngươi hãy để họ ra một bên.” 6 Chỉ có ba trăm người là bụm nước và đưa lên miệng uống, còn tất cả đều hụp xuống mà uống nước.
7 CHÚA lại phán với Ghi-đê-ôn: “Ta sẽ dùng ba trăm người bụm tay uống nước đó mà giải cứu các ngươi, và Ta sẽ phó dân Ma-đi-an vào tay ngươi. Hãy cho tất cả những người khác trở về nhà.” 8 Vậy Ghi-đê-ôn cho tất cả những người Y-sơ-ra-ên ấy về nhà, mà chỉ giữ lại có ba trăm người. Rồi họ nhận lương thực và cầm những chiếc kèn trong tay. Vả, trại quân của dân Ma-đi-an nằm trong thung lũng, ở phía dưới.
9 Đêm đó, CHÚA phán với Ghi-đê-ôn: “Hãy đứng dậy, xuống tấn công trại quân Ma-đi-an, vì Ta sẽ phó nó vào tay ngươi. 10 Nhưng nếu ngươi sợ tấn công, thì hãy dẫn Phu-ra, đầy tớ ngươi, rồi cùng nó đi xuống đó. 11 Ngươi hãy nghe điều chúng nói, rồi sau đó ngươi sẽ được phấn chí mà tấn công trại giặc.” Vậy Ghi-đê-ôn cùng Phu-ra, đầy tớ ông, lẻn tới gần trạm canh, ở đầu trại. 12 Vả, dân Ma-đi-an, dân A-ma-léc, và các dân tộc phương Đông dựng trại trong thung lũng đông như cào cào; lạc đà của chúng đông vô số, chẳng khác gì cát nơi bờ biển. 13 Khi Ghi-đê-ôn đến, ông nghe một tên lính nói với bạn đồng đội hắn rằng: “Tôi nằm mơ, thấy có một cái bánh lúa mạch tròn lăn vào trại quân Ma-đi-an. 15 Khi Ghi-đê-ôn nghe được điềm chiêm bao và nghe rõ lời giải nghĩa thì ông thờ lạy Đức Chúa Trời; rồi ông trở về trại quân Y-sơ-ra-ên và nói: “Hãy thức dậy! Vì CHÚA đã phó đội quân của dân Ma-đi-an vào tay anh em.” 16 Sau khi ông chia ba trăm người thành ba đội, ông trao cho mỗi người một chiếc kèn, một bình không, và một cây đuốc trong bình; 17 rồi ông bảo họ: “Anh em hãy để ý tôi. Hễ tôi làm sao thì anh em làm vậy. Khi tôi đến gần trại giặc, tôi làm thể nào thì anh em cứ làm theo thể ấy. 18 Khi tôi và những người theo tôi thổi kèn, thì anh em cũng hãy thổi kèn quanh trại giặc và la lớn rằng: Vì CHÚA và vì Ghi-đê-ôn!”
19 Vậy Ghi-đê-ôn và một trăm người đi với ông đến vòng đai trại giặc vào khoảng giữa khuya, ngay sau khi đổi gác. Họ thổi kèn, đập vỡ bình cầm sẵn trong tay. 20 Vậy cả ba đội cùng thổi kèn, đập vỡ bình, tay trái giơ cao ngọn đuốc, tay phải cầm kèn và thổi, xong họ la lớn: “Hãy tuốt gươm vì CHÚA và vì Ghi-đê-ôn!” 21 Ai nấy cứ đứng y tại vị trí mình, quanh trại giặc. Bấy giờ cả trại quân đều vỡ chạy; chúng la hét và chạy trốn. 22 Khi họ thổi ba trăm chiếc kèn, CHÚA khiến quân giặc rút gươm chém giết lẫn nhau, và cả đội quân tàn sát lẫn nhau. Tàn quân chạy thoát được trốn đến tận Bết Si-ta, về hướng Xê-rê-đa, và tận biên giới A-bên Mê-hô-la, gần Ta-bát. 23 Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên từ các bộ tộc Nép-ta-li, A-se, và Ma-na-se được tin báo, bèn cùng nhau đuổi giết dân Ma-đi-an.
24 Bấy giờ Ghi-đê-ôn sai các sứ giả đến khắp miền núi Ép-ra-im kêu gọi: “Xin hãy xuống đánh dân Ma-đi-an và chiếm các chỗ nước cạn của sông Giô-đanh cho đến Bết Ba-ra, và giữ dọc theo bờ sông.” Vậy tất cả các nam đinh của Ép-ra-im kéo nhau ra. Họ chiếm giữ những chỗ nước cạn của sông Giô-đanh cho đến Bết Ba-ra, và giữ dọc theo bờ sông. 25 Họ bắt sống hai tướng của quân Ma-đi-an là Ô-rếp và Xê-ép. Họ giết Ô-rếp ở tảng đá Ô-rếp, và giết Xê-ép ở vựa ép rượu Xê-ép. Họ tiếp tục truy đuổi dân Ma-đi-an và mang thủ cấp của Ô-rếp và Xê-ép đến trình cho Ghi-đê-ôn lúc ấy đang ở bên kia sông Giô-đanh.
