2 ¶ Y el ángel del SEÑOR subió de Gilgal a Boquim, {Heb. lloradores} y dijo: Yo os saqué de Egipto, y os introduje en la tierra de la cual había jurado a vuestros padres; y dije: No invalidaré jamás mi pacto con vosotros;

²con tal que vosotros no hagáis pacto con los moradores de esta tierra, antes habéis de destruir sus altares; mas vosotros no habéis oído mi voz; ¿por qué habéis hecho esto?

³Por tanto yo también dije: No los echaré de delante de vosotros, sino que os serán por azote para vuestros costados, y sus dioses por tropezadero.

⁴Y cuando el ángel del SEÑOR habló estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo lloró en alta voz.

⁵Y llamaron por nombre aquel lugar Boquim; y sacrificaron allí al SEÑOR.

⁶¶ Porque ya Josué había despedido al pueblo, y los hijos de Israel se habían ido cada uno a su herencia para poseer la tierra.

⁷Y el pueblo había servido al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron largos días después de Josué, los cuales habían visto todas las grandes obras del SEÑOR, que él había hecho con Israel.

⁸Y murió Josué hijo de Nun, esclavo del SEÑOR, siendo de ciento diez años.

⁹Y lo enterraron en el término de su heredad en Timnat-sera, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

¹⁰Y toda aquella generación fue también recogida con sus padres. Y se levantó después de ellos otra generación, que no conocía al SEÑOR, ni la obra que él había hecho a Israel.

¹¹Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y sirvieron a los baales.

¹²Y dejaron al SEÑOR el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, tras los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira al SEÑOR.

¹³Y dejaron al SEÑOR, y adoraron a Baal y a Astarot.

¹⁴Y el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, el cual los entregó en manos de salteadores que les robaron, y los vendió en manos de sus enemigos de alrededor; y no pudieron parar más delante de sus enemigos.

¹⁵Por dondequiera que salían, la mano del SEÑOR era contra ellos para mal, como el SEÑOR había dicho, y como el SEÑOR lo había jurado; así los afligió en gran manera.

¹⁶Mas el SEÑOR despertó jueces que los libraran de mano de los que les saqueaban.

¹⁷Y tampoco oyeron a sus jueces, sino que fornicaron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron; y se apartaron muy pronto del camino en que anduvieron sus padres escuchando los mandamientos del SEÑOR; mas ellos no lo hicieron así.

¹⁸Y cuando el SEÑOR les despertaba jueces, el SEÑOR era con el juez, y los libraba de mano de los enemigos todo el tiempo de aquel juez; porque el SEÑOR se arrepentía por sus gemidos a causa de los que los oprimían y afligían.

¹⁹Mas al morir el juez, ellos se volvían, y se corrompían más que sus padres, siguiendo a dioses ajenos para servirles, e inclinándose delante de ellos; y nada disminuían de sus obras, ni de su obstinado camino.

²⁰Y la ira del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: Pues que esta gente traspasa mi pacto que ordené a sus padres, y no escuchan mi voz,

²¹tampoco yo echaré más de delante de ellos a ninguno de estos gentiles que dejó Josué cuando murió;

²²para que por ellos probara yo a Israel, si guardarían ellos el camino del SEÑOR andando en él, como sus padres lo guardaron, o no.

²³Por esto dejó el SEÑOR aquellos gentiles, y no los desarraigó luego, ni los entregó en mano de Josué.

The Angel of the Lord at Bokim

2 The angel of the Lord^(A) went up from Gilgal^(B) to Bokim^(C) and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt^(D) and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors.^(E) I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,^(F) ²and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,^(G) but you shall break down their altars.^(H)’ Yet you have disobeyed^(I) me. Why have you done this? ³And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;^(J) they will become traps^(K) for you, and their gods will become snares^(L) to you.’”

⁴When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,^(M) ⁵and they called that place Bokim.^[a]^(N) There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Disobedience and Defeat^(O)

⁶After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. ⁷The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.^(P)

⁸Joshua son of Nun,^(Q) the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. ⁹And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres^[b]^(R) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

¹⁰After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.^(S) ¹¹Then the Israelites did evil^(T) in the eyes of the Lord^(U) and served the Baals.^(V) ¹²They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods^(W) of the peoples around them.^(X) They aroused^(Y) the Lord’s anger^(Z) ¹³because they forsook^(AA) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.^(AB) ¹⁴In his anger^(AC) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands^(AD) of raiders who plundered^(AE) them. He sold them^(AF) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.^(AG) ¹⁵Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them^(AH) to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.^(AI)

¹⁶Then the Lord raised up judges,^[c]^(AJ) who saved^(AK) them out of the hands of these raiders. ¹⁷Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted^(AL) themselves to other gods^(AM) and worshiped them.^(AN) They quickly turned^(AO) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.^(AP) ¹⁸Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved^(AQ) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented^(AR) because of their groaning^(AS) under those who oppressed and afflicted^(AT) them. ¹⁹But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt^(AU) than those of their ancestors,^(AV) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.^(AW) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn^(AX) ways.

²⁰Therefore the Lord was very angry^(AY) with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant^(AZ) I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, ²¹I will no longer drive out^(BA) before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. ²²I will use them to test^(BB) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” ²³The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.^(BC)

Israel’s Disobedience

2 Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: ^(A)“I led you up from Egypt and ^(B)brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and ^(C)I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. ²And ^(D)you shall make no ^[a]covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ^(E)you shall tear down their altars.’ ^(F)But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? ³Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be ^(G)thorns^[b] in your side, and ^(H)their gods shall ^[c]be a ^(I)snare to you.’ ” ⁴So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.

⁵Then they called the name of that place ^[d]Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord. ⁶And when ^(J)Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went each to his own inheritance to possess the land.

Death of Joshua^(K)

⁷^(L)So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. ⁸Now ^(M)Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. ⁹^(N)And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at ^(O)Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. ¹⁰When all that generation had ^[e]been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who ^(P)did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

¹¹Then the children of Israel did ^(Q)evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; ¹²and they ^(R)forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed ^(S)other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they ^(T)bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. ¹³They forsook the Lord ^(U)and served ^[f]Baal and the ^[g]Ashtoreths. ¹⁴^(V)And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He ^(W)delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and ^(X)He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they ^(Y)could no longer stand before their enemies. ¹⁵Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had ^(Z)sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.

¹⁶Nevertheless, ^(AA)the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. ¹⁷Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they ^(AB)played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. ¹⁸And when the Lord raised up judges for them, ^(AC)the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; ^(AD)for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. ¹⁹And it came to pass, ^(AE)when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.

²⁰Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because this nation has ^(AF)transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, ²¹I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua ^(AG)left when he died, ²²so ^(AH)that through them I may ^(AI)test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not.” ²³Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.

Israel's Disobedience

2 Now the angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to ^(A)Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up from Egypt and brought you into the land that I swore to give to your fathers. I said, ^(B)‘I will never break my covenant with you, ²^(C)and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ^(D)you shall break down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. ¹¹^(J)And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. ¹²^(K)And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. ^(L)They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and ^(M)bowed down to them. ^(N)And they provoked the Lord to anger. ¹³They abandoned the Lord ^(O)and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. ¹⁴^(P)So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he ^(Q)gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. ^(R)And he sold them into the hand of their surrounding enemies, ^(S)so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. ¹⁵Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them for harm, as the Lord had warned, ^(T)and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were in terrible distress.

The Lord Raises Up Judges

¹⁶^(U)Then the Lord raised up judges, ^(V)who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. ¹⁷Yet they did not listen to their judges, for ^(W)they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. ^(X)They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so. ¹⁸Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, ^(Y)the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. ^(Z)For the Lord was moved to pity by ^(AA)their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. ¹⁹But ^(AB)whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. The Lord’s Messenger Comes to Bokim

2 The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said to the Israelites, “I brought you out of Egypt into this land that I swore to give your ancestors, and I said I would never break my covenant with you. ²For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? ³So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides,^[a] and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”

⁴When the angel of the Lord finished speaking to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. ⁵So they called the place Bokim (which means “weeping”), and they offered sacrifices there to the Lord.

The Death of Joshua

⁶After Joshua sent the people away, each of the tribes left to take possession of the land allotted to them. ⁷And the Israelites served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.

⁸Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. ⁹They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah^[b] in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Israel Disobeys the Lord

¹⁰After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.

¹¹The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. ¹²They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. And they angered the Lord. ¹³They abandoned the Lord to serve Baal and the images of Ashtoreth. ¹⁴This made the Lord burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them. ¹⁵Every time Israel went out to battle, the Lord fought against them, causing them to be defeated, just as he had warned. And the people were in great distress.

The Lord Rescues His People

¹⁶Then the Lord raised up judges to rescue the Israelites from their attackers. ¹⁷Yet Israel did not listen to the judges but prostituted themselves by worshiping other gods. How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands.

¹⁸Whenever the Lord raised up a judge over Israel, he was with that judge and rescued the people from their enemies throughout the judge’s lifetime. For the Lord took pity on his people, who were burdened by oppression and suffering. ¹⁹But when the judge died, the people returned to their corrupt ways, behaving worse than those who had lived before them. They went after other gods, serving and worshiping them. And they refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

²⁰So the Lord burned with anger against Israel. He said, “Because these people have violated my covenant, which I made with their ancestors, and have ignored my commands, ²¹I will no longer drive out the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. ²²I did this to test Israel—to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the Lord as their ancestors did.” ²³That is why the Lord left those nations in place. He did not quickly drive them out or allow Joshua to conquer them all.
