2 ¶ Y el ángel del SEÑOR subió de Gilgal a Boquim, {Heb. lloradores} y dijo: Yo os saqué de Egipto, y os introduje en la tierra de la cual había jurado a vuestros padres; y dije: No invalidaré jamás mi pacto con vosotros;
2 con tal que vosotros no hagáis pacto con los moradores de esta tierra, antes habéis de destruir sus altares; mas vosotros no habéis oído mi voz; ¿por qué habéis hecho esto?
3 Por tanto yo también dije: No los echaré de delante de vosotros, sino que os serán por azote para vuestros costados, y sus dioses por tropezadero.
4 Y cuando el ángel del SEÑOR habló estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo lloró en alta voz.
5 Y llamaron por nombre aquel lugar Boquim; y sacrificaron allí al SEÑOR.
6 ¶ Porque ya Josué había despedido al pueblo, y los hijos de Israel se habían ido cada uno a su herencia para poseer la tierra.
7 Y el pueblo había servido al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron largos días después de Josué, los cuales habían visto todas las grandes obras del SEÑOR, que él había hecho con Israel.
8 Y murió Josué hijo de Nun, esclavo del SEÑOR, siendo de ciento diez años.
9 Y lo enterraron en el término de su heredad en Timnat-sera, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.
10 Y toda aquella generación fue también recogida con sus padres. Y se levantó después de ellos otra generación, que no conocía al SEÑOR, ni la obra que él había hecho a Israel.
11 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y sirvieron a los baales.
12 Y dejaron al SEÑOR el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, tras los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira al SEÑOR.
13 Y dejaron al SEÑOR, y adoraron a Baal y a Astarot.
14 Y el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, el cual los entregó en manos de salteadores que les robaron, y los vendió en manos de sus enemigos de alrededor; y no pudieron parar más delante de sus enemigos.
15 Por dondequiera que salían, la mano del SEÑOR era contra ellos para mal, como el SEÑOR había dicho, y como el SEÑOR lo había jurado; así los afligió en gran manera.
16 Mas el SEÑOR despertó jueces que los libraran de mano de los que les saqueaban.
17 Y tampoco oyeron a sus jueces, sino que fornicaron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron; y se apartaron muy pronto del camino en que anduvieron sus padres escuchando los mandamientos del SEÑOR; mas ellos no lo hicieron así.
18 Y cuando el SEÑOR les despertaba jueces, el SEÑOR era con el juez, y los libraba de mano de los enemigos todo el tiempo de aquel juez; porque el SEÑOR se arrepentía por sus gemidos a causa de los que los oprimían y afligían.
19 Mas al morir el juez, ellos se volvían, y se corrompían más que sus padres, siguiendo a dioses ajenos para servirles, e inclinándose delante de ellos; y nada disminuían de sus obras, ni de su obstinado camino.
20 Y la ira del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: Pues que esta gente traspasa mi pacto que ordené a sus padres, y no escuchan mi voz,
21 tampoco yo echaré más de delante de ellos a ninguno de estos gentiles que dejó Josué cuando murió;
22 para que por ellos probara yo a Israel, si guardarían ellos el camino del SEÑOR andando en él, como sus padres lo guardaron, o no.
23 Por esto dejó el SEÑOR aquellos gentiles, y no los desarraigó luego, ni los entregó en mano de Josué.

New Living Translation
The Lord’s Messenger Comes to Bokim
2 The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said to the Israelites, “I brought you out of Egypt into this land that I swore to give your ancestors, and I said I would never break my covenant with you. 2 For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? 3 So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides,[a] and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”
4 When the angel of the Lord finished speaking to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. 5 So they called the place Bokim (which means “weeping”), and they offered sacrifices there to the Lord.
The Death of Joshua
6 After Joshua sent the people away, each of the tribes left to take possession of the land allotted to them. 7 And the Israelites served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and the leaders who outlived him—those who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.
8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. 9 They buried him in the land he had been allocated, at Timnath-serah[b] in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
Israel Disobeys the Lord
10 After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.
11 The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. 12 They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. And they angered the Lord. 13 They abandoned the Lord to serve Baal and the images of Ashtoreth. 14 This made the Lord burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them. 15 Every time Israel went out to battle, the Lord fought against them, causing them to be defeated, just as he had warned. And the people were in great distress.
The Lord Rescues His People
16 Then the Lord raised up judges to rescue the Israelites from their attackers. 17 Yet Israel did not listen to the judges but prostituted themselves by worshiping other gods. How quickly they turned away from the path of their ancestors, who had walked in obedience to the Lord’s commands.
18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge over Israel, he was with that judge and rescued the people from their enemies throughout the judge’s lifetime. For the Lord took pity on his people, who were burdened by oppression and suffering. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to their corrupt ways, behaving worse than those who had lived before them. They went after other gods, serving and worshiping them. And they refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
20 So the Lord burned with anger against Israel. He said, “Because these people have violated my covenant, which I made with their ancestors, and have ignored my commands, 21 I will no longer drive out the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. 22 I did this to test Israel—to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the Lord as their ancestors did.” 23 That is why the Lord left those nations in place. He did not quickly drive them out or allow Joshua to conquer them all.
