El ángel del Señor anuncia desgracias a Israel
2 El ángel del Señor subió de Guilgal a Betel y dijo:
— Yo los saqué de Egipto, los traje a la tierra que había prometido con juramento a sus antepasados y les dije: “No romperé jamás mi alianza con ustedes; 2 por su parte, no harán alianza con los habitantes de este país y destruirán sus altares”. Pero ustedes no han escuchado mi voz. ¿Por qué han obrado así? 3 Por eso no los expulsaré ante ustedes; ellos serán sus opresores, y los dioses de ellos una trampa para ustedes.
4 Apenas el ángel del Señor dijo estas palabras a todos los israelitas, el pueblo se puso a llorar a gritos. 5 Así que llamaron a aquel lugar Bokín. Y ofrecieron allí sacrificios al Señor.
II.— HISTORIAS DE LOS “JUECES” (2,6—16,31)
Interpretación religiosa programática
6 Josué despidió al pueblo, y los israelitas se volvieron cada uno a su heredad para tomar posesión de ella. 7 El pueblo sirvió al Señor mientras vivieron Josué y los ancianos que le sobrevivieron y que habían sido testigos de todas las grandes hazañas que el Señor había hecho en favor de Israel. 8 Pero Josué, hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, murió a la edad de ciento diez años. 9 Lo enterraron en el término de su heredad, en Timná Séraj, en la montaña de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaas. 10 También aquella generación fue a reunirse con sus antepasados y surgió otra generación que no conocía al Señor ni lo que había hecho por Israel.
11 Entonces los israelitas hicieron lo que desagrada al Señor: dieron culto a los Baales; 12 abandonaron al Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados, que los había sacado de Egipto, y siguieron a otros dioses de los pueblos de alrededor; se postraron ante ellos e irritaron al Señor. 13 Dejaron al Señor y dieron culto a Baal y a las Astartés. 14 Entonces se encolerizó el Señor contra Israel y los entregó en manos de salteadores que los saqueaban; los dejó a merced de los enemigos de alrededor y no pudieron ya resistir ante ellos. 15 En todas sus campañas el Señor se les ponía en contra haciendo que fracasaran tal como el Señor se lo tenía dicho y jurado. Los puso así en gran aprieto.
16 Pero entonces el Señor hacía surgir jueces que los ponían a salvo de quienes los saqueaban. 17 Sin embargo, tampoco hicieron caso de esos jueces. Dieron culto a otros dioses y se postraron ante ellos. Se desviaban en seguida del camino seguido por sus padres que habían sido dóciles a los mandamientos del Señor y no los imitaban.
18 Cuando el Señor les suscitaba jueces, el Señor asistía al juez y, mientras este vivía, estaban a salvo de sus enemigos, porque el Señor se compadecía de los gemidos que proferían ante los que los maltrataban y oprimían. 19 Pero en cuanto moría el juez, volvían a corromperse más todavía que sus padres e iban detrás de otros dioses, dándoles culto, postrándose ante ellos y siguiendo en todo las prácticas y la conducta obstinada de sus padres. 20 Así que el Señor se encolerizó con el pueblo israelita y dijo:
— Ya que este pueblo ha quebrantado la alianza que sellé con sus antepasados y no ha escuchado mi voz, 21 tampoco yo seguiré expulsando ante ellos a ninguno de los pueblos que Josué al morir dejó sin conquistar.
22 El Señor quería poner a prueba con esos pueblos a los israelitas, a ver si seguían o no los caminos del Señor, como los habían seguido sus antepasados. 23 Por eso el Señor no se metió con aquellos pueblos, y no los expulsó en seguida, ni los entregó en manos de Josué.

2 El ángel del Señor subió de Guilgal a Boquín y dijo: «Yo los saqué a ustedes de Egipto y los hice entrar en la tierra que juré dar a sus antepasados. Dije: “Nunca quebrantaré mi pacto con ustedes; 2 ustedes, por su parte, no harán ningún pacto con la gente de esta tierra, sino que derribarán sus altares”. ¡Pero me han desobedecido! ¿Por qué han actuado así? 3 Pues quiero que sepan que no expulsaré de la presencia de ustedes a esa gente; ellos les harán la vida imposible y sus dioses les serán una trampa».
4 Cuando el ángel del Señor habló así a todos los israelitas, el pueblo lloró a gritos. 5 Por eso llamaron a aquel lugar Boquín,[a] y allí ofrecieron sacrificios al Señor.
Desobediencia y derrota(A)
6 Cuando Josué despidió al pueblo, los israelitas se fueron a tomar posesión de la tierra, cada uno a su propio territorio. 7 Durante toda la vida de Josué, el pueblo sirvió al Señor. Así sucedió también durante el tiempo en que estuvieron al frente de Israel los jefes que habían compartido el liderazgo con Josué y que habían visto todas las grandes obras que el Señor había hecho por Israel.
8 Josué, hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, murió a la edad de ciento diez años 9 y lo sepultaron en Timnat Jeres,[b] tierra de su heredad, en la región montañosa de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.
10 También murió toda aquella generación y surgió otra que no conocía al Señor ni sabía lo que él había hecho por Israel. 11 Esos israelitas hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del Señor y adoraron a los ídolos de Baal. 12 Abandonaron al Señor, Dios de sus antepasados, que los había sacado de Egipto, siguieron a otros dioses —dioses de los pueblos que los rodeaban— y los adoraron, provocando así la ira del Señor. 13 Abandonaron al Señor y adoraron a Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté. 14 Entonces el Señor se enfureció contra los israelitas y los entregó en manos de invasores que los saquearon. Los dejó en manos de los enemigos que tenían a su alrededor, a los que ya no pudieron hacerles frente. 15 Cada vez que los israelitas salían a combatir, la mano del Señor estaba en contra de ellos para su mal, tal como el Señor se lo había dicho y jurado. Así llegaron a verse muy angustiados.
16 Entonces el Señor hizo surgir líderes[c] que los libraron del poder de esos invasores. 17 Sin embargo, tampoco escucharon a esos líderes, sino que se prostituyeron al entregarse a otros dioses y adorarlos. Muy pronto se apartaron del camino que habían seguido sus antepasados, el camino de la obediencia a los mandamientos del Señor. 18 Cada vez que el Señor levantaba entre ellos un líder, el Señor estaba con él. Mientras ese líder vivía, los libraba del poder de sus enemigos, porque el Señor se compadecía de ellos al oírlos gemir por causa de quienes los oprimían y afligían. 19 Pero cuando el líder moría, ellos volvían a corromperse aún más que sus antepasados, pues se iban tras otros dioses, a los que servían y adoraban. De tal forma se negaban a abandonar sus malvadas costumbres y su obstinada conducta.
20 Por eso el Señor se enfureció contra Israel y dijo: «Puesto que esta nación ha violado el pacto que yo establecí con sus antepasados y no me ha obedecido, 21 tampoco yo echaré de su presencia a ninguna de las naciones que Josué dejó al morir. 22 Las usaré para poner a prueba a Israel y ver si guarda mi camino y anda por él, como lo hicieron sus antepasados». 23 Por eso el Señor dejó en paz a esas naciones; no las echó enseguida ni las entregó en manos de Josué.

The Angel of the Lord at Bokim
2 The angel of the Lord(A) went up from Gilgal(B) to Bokim(C) and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt(D) and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors.(E) I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,(F) 2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,(G) but you shall break down their altars.(H)’ Yet you have disobeyed(I) me. Why have you done this? 3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;(J) they will become traps(K) for you, and their gods will become snares(L) to you.’”
4 When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,(M) 5 and they called that place Bokim.[a](N) There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.
Disobedience and Defeat(O)
6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.(P)
8 Joshua son of Nun,(Q) the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres[b](R) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.(S) 11 Then the Israelites did evil(T) in the eyes of the Lord(U) and served the Baals.(V) 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods(W) of the peoples around them.(X) They aroused(Y) the Lord’s anger(Z) 13 because they forsook(AA) him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.(AB) 14 In his anger(AC) against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands(AD) of raiders who plundered(AE) them. He sold them(AF) into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.(AG) 15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them(AH) to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.(AI)
16 Then the Lord raised up judges,[c](AJ) who saved(AK) them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted(AL) themselves to other gods(AM) and worshiped them.(AN) They quickly turned(AO) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.(AP) 18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved(AQ) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented(AR) because of their groaning(AS) under those who oppressed and afflicted(AT) them. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt(AU) than those of their ancestors,(AV) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.(AW) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn(AX) ways.
20 Therefore the Lord was very angry(AY) with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant(AZ) I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, 21 I will no longer drive out(BA) before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 I will use them to test(BB) Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” 23 The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.(BC)

2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.
6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:
12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.
13 And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.
18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
20 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
