Sansón en Gaza
16 Un día Sansón fue a la ciudad de Gaza. Allí vio a una prostituta, y entró en su casa para pasar la noche con ella. 2 Cuando los de Gaza supieron que Sansón estaba en la ciudad, la rodearon; y se quedaron vigilando las puertas de la ciudad todo aquel día. Por la noche se fueron a descansar, pensando que lo matarían cuando amaneciera. 3 Pero Sansón estuvo acostado sólo hasta la medianoche. A esa hora se levantó y arrancó las puertas de la ciudad junto con sus pilares y su tranca, y echándose todo ello al hombro se lo llevó a lo alto del monte que está frente a Hebrón.
Sansón y Dalila
4 Después Sansón se enamoró de una mujer llamada Dalila, que vivía en el valle de Sorec. 5 Los jefes de los filisteos fueron a ver a Dalila, y le dijeron:
—Engaña a Sansón y averigua de dónde le vienen sus fuerzas extraordinarias, y cómo podríamos vencerlo; así podremos atarlo y tenerlo sujeto. A cambio de tus servicios, cada uno de nosotros te dará mil cien monedas de plata.
6 Entonces ella le dijo a Sansón:
—Por favor, dime de dónde te vienen tus fuerzas tan extraordinarias. ¿Hay algún modo de atarte sin que te puedas soltar?
7 Y Sansón le respondió:
—Si me atan con siete cuerdas de arco que todavía no estén secas, perderé mi fuerza y seré un hombre común y corriente.
8 Los jefes de los filisteos le llevaron a Dalila siete cuerdas de arco nuevas, y con ellas Dalila ató a Sansón. 9 Y como ya antes había escondido a unos hombres en su cuarto, gritó:
—¡Sansón, te atacan los filisteos!
Entonces Sansón rompió las cuerdas, como si fueran un cordón quemado. Y los filisteos no pudieron averiguar de dónde le venía su fuerza. 10 Dalila le dijo:
—¡Me engañaste! ¡Me has estado mintiendo! Pero ahora sí, por favor, dime qué hay que hacer para atarte.
11 Y Sansón le respondió:
—Si me atan con sogas nuevas que nunca se hayan usado, perderé mi fuerza y seré un hombre común y corriente.
12 Entonces Dalila tomó unas sogas nuevas, lo ató con ellas, y gritó:
—¡Sansón, te atacan los filisteos!
También esta vez ella había escondido unos hombres en su cuarto; pero Sansón rompió las sogas, como si fueran hilos delgados. 13 Dalila le dijo a Sansón:
—¡Todavía me sigues engañando! ¡Todavía me estás mintiendo! ¡Dime qué hay que hacer para atarte!
Y Sansón le contestó:
—Lo que tienes que hacer es entretejer siete trenzas de mi cabello con la tela del telar, y clavar bien la estaca en el suelo. Así yo perderé mi fuerza y seré un hombre común y corriente.
Entonces Dalila hizo dormir a Sansón, y tomando las siete trenzas de su cabello, las entretejió con la tela del telar, 14 después de lo cual clavó bien la estaca en el suelo y gritó:
—¡Sansón, te atacan los filisteos!
Pero Sansón se levantó y arrancó del suelo la estaca y el telar. 15 Entonces ella le dijo:
—¡Mentiroso! ¿Cómo te atreves a decir que me quieres? Ya van tres veces que te burlas de mí, y todavía no me has dicho de dónde te viene toda tu fuerza.
16 Como era tanta la insistencia de Dalila, que a todas horas le hacía la misma pregunta, Sansón estaba tan fastidiado que tenía ganas de morirse; 17 así que finalmente le contó a Dalila su secreto:
—Nadie me ha cortado jamás el cabello, porque desde antes de nacer estoy consagrado a Dios como nazareo. Si me llegaran a cortar el cabello, perdería mi fuerza y sería tan débil como un hombre común y corriente.
18 Cuando Dalila se dio cuenta de que esta vez sí le había descubierto su secreto, mandó a decir a los jefes filisteos:
—¡Ahora sí, vengan, que Sansón me ha descubierto su secreto!
Entonces ellos fueron a verla con el dinero en la mano.
19 Dalila hizo que Sansón se durmiera con la cabeza recostada en sus piernas, y llamó a un hombre para que le cortara las siete trenzas de su cabellera. Luego ella comenzó a maltratarlo, 20 y le gritó:
—¡Sansón, te atacan los filisteos!
Sansón se despertó, creyendo que se libraría como las otras veces, pero no sabía que el Señor lo había abandonado. 21 Entonces los filisteos lo agarraron y le sacaron los ojos, y se lo llevaron a Gaza, en donde lo sujetaron con cadenas de bronce y lo pusieron a trabajar en el molino de la cárcel. 22 Sin embargo, su cabello empezó a crecerle de nuevo.
Muerte de Sansón
23 Los jefes de los filisteos se reunieron para celebrar su triunfo y ofrecer sacrificios a su dios Dagón. Y cantaban:
«Nuestro dios ha puesto en nuestras manos
a Sansón, nuestro enemigo.»
24 Y cuando la gente lo vio, también cantó y alabó a su dios, diciendo:
«Nuestro dios ha puesto en nuestras manos
a Sansón, nuestro enemigo,
que destruía nuestros campos
y mataba a muchos de los nuestros.»
25 Tan contentos estaban, que pidieron que les llevaran a Sansón para divertirse con él. Lo sacaron, pues, de la cárcel, y se divirtieron a costa de él, y lo pusieron de pie entre dos columnas. 26 Entonces Sansón le dijo al muchacho que lo llevaba de la mano:
—Ponme donde yo pueda tocar las columnas que sostienen el templo. Quiero apoyarme en ellas.
27 Todos los jefes de los filisteos se hallaban en el templo, que estaba lleno de hombres y mujeres. Había, además, como tres mil personas en la parte de arriba, mirando cómo los otros se divertían con Sansón. 28 Entonces Sansón clamó al Señor, y le dijo: «Te ruego, Señor, que te acuerdes de mí tan sólo una vez más, y que me des fuerzas para cobrarles a los filisteos mis dos ojos de una vez por todas.» 29 Luego buscó con las manos las dos columnas centrales, sobre las que descansaba todo el templo, y apoyando sus dos manos contra ellas, 30 gritó: «¡Mueran conmigo los filisteos!»
Entonces empujó con toda su fuerza, y el templo se derrumbó sobre los jefes de los filisteos y sobre todos los que estaban allí. Fueron más los que mató Sansón al morir, que los que había matado en toda su vida.
31 Después vinieron los hermanos y todos los parientes de Sansón, y recogieron su cuerpo y lo enterraron entre Sorá y Estaol, en la tumba de Manoa, su padre. Durante veinte años Sansón había sido caudillo de los israelitas.

Samson and Delilah
16 One day Samson(A) went to Gaza,(B) where he saw a prostitute.(C) He went in to spend the night with her. 2 The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.(D) They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn(E) we’ll kill him.”
3 But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.(F)
4 Some time later, he fell in love(G) with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.(H) 5 The rulers of the Philistines(I) went to her and said, “See if you can lure(J) him into showing you the secret of his great strength(K) and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels[a] of silver.”(L)
6 So Delilah(M) said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
7 Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
8 Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. 9 With men hidden in the room,(N) she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(O) But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have made a fool of me;(P) you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied.”
11 He said, “If anyone ties me securely with new ropes(Q) that have never been used, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(R) But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.
13 Delilah then said to Samson, “All this time you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied.”
He replied, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I’ll become as weak as any other man.” So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabric 14 and[b] tightened it with the pin.
Again she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(S) He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.
15 Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’(T) when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time(U) you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.(V)” 16 With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.
17 So he told her everything.(W) “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite(X) dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines(Y), “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.(Z) 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him.[c] And his strength left him.(AA)
20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”(AB)
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.(AC)
21 Then the Philistines(AD) seized him, gouged out his eyes(AE) and took him down to Gaza.(AF) Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain(AG) in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
The Death of Samson
23 Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon(AH) their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.”
24 When the people saw him, they praised their god,(AI) saying,
“Our god has delivered our enemy
into our hands,(AJ)
the one who laid waste our land
and multiplied our slain.”
25 While they were in high spirits,(AK) they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.
When they stood him among the pillars, 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof(AL) were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord,(AM) “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge(AN) on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
31 Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah(AO) his father. He had led[d](AP) Israel twenty years.(AQ)

16 Y FUÉ Samsón á Gaza, y vió allí una mujer ramera, y entró á ella.
2 Y fué dicho á los de Gaza: Samsón es venido acá. Y cercáronlo, y pusiéronle espías toda aquella noche á la puerta de la ciudad: y estuvieron callados toda aquella noche, diciendo: Hasta la luz de la mañana; entonces lo mataremos.
3 Mas Samsón durmió hasta la media noche; y á la media noche se levantó, y tomando las puertas de la ciudad con sus dos pilares y su cerrojo, echóselas al hombro, y fuése, y subióse con ellas á la cumbre del monte que está delante de Hebrón.
4 Después de esto aconteció que se enamoró de una mujer en el valle de Sorec, la cual se llamaba Dalila.
5 Y vinieron á ella los príncipes de los Filisteos, y dijéronle: Engáñale y sabe en qué consiste su grande fuerza, y cómo lo podríamos vencer, para que lo atemos y lo atormentemos; y cada uno de nosotros te dará mil y cien siclos de plata.
6 Y Dalila dijo á Samsón: Yo te ruego que me declares en qué consiste tu grande fuerza, y cómo podrás ser atado para ser atormentado.
7 Y respondióle Samsón: Si me ataren con siete mimbres verdes que aun no estén enjutos, entonces me debilitaré, y seré como cualquiera de los hombres.
8 Y los príncipes de los Filisteos le trajeron siete mimbres verdes que aun no se habían enjugado, y atóle con ellos.
9 Y estaban espías en casa de ella en una cámara. Entonces ella le dijo: ¡Samsón, los Filisteos sobre ti! Y él rompió los mimbres, como se rompe una cuerda de estopa cuando siente el fuego: y no se supo su fuerza.
10 Entonces Dalila dijo á Samsón: He aquí tú me has engañado, y me has dicho mentiras: descúbreme pues ahora, yo te ruego, cómo podrás ser atado.
11 Y él le dijo: Si me ataren fuertemente con cuerdas nuevas, con las cuales ninguna cosa se haya hecho, yo me debilitaré, y seré como cualquiera de los hombres.
12 Y Dalila tomó cuerdas nuevas, y atóle con ellas, y díjole: ¡Samsón, los Filisteos sobre ti! Y los espías estaban en una cámara. Mas él las rompió de sus brazos como un hilo.
13 Y Dalila dijo á Samsón: Hasta ahora me engañas, y tratas conmigo con mentiras. Descúbreme pues ahora cómo podrás ser atado. Él entonces le dijo: Si tejieres siete guedejas de mi cabeza con la tela.
14 Y ella hincó la estaca, y díjole: ¡Samsón, los Filisteos sobre ti! Mas despertando él de su sueño, arrancó la estaca del telar con la tela.
15 Y ella le dijo: ¿Cómo dices, Yo te amo, pues que tu corazón no está conmigo? Ya me has engañado tres veces, y no me has aún descubierto en qué está tu gran fuerza.
16 Y aconteció que, apretándole ella cada día con sus palabras e importunándole, su alma fué reducida á mortal angustia.
17 Descubrióle pues todo su corazón, y díjole: Nunca á mi cabeza llegó navaja; porque soy Nazareo de Dios desde el vientre de mi madre. Si fuere rapado, mi fuerza se apartará de mí, y seré debilitado, y como todos los hombres.
18 Y viendo Dalila que él le había descubierto todo su corazón, envió á llamar á los príncipes de los Filisteos, diciendo: Venid esta vez, porque él me ha descubierto todo su corazón. Y los príncipes de los Filisteos vinieron á ella, trayendo en su mano el dinero.
19 Y ella hizo que él se durmiese sobre sus rodillas; y llamado un hombre, rapóle siete guedejas de su cabeza, y comenzó á afligirlo, pues su fuerza se apartó de él.
20 Y díjole: ¡Samsón, los Filisteos sobre ti! Y luego que despertó él de su sueño, se dijo: Esta vez saldré como las otras, y me escaparé: no sabiendo que Jehová ya se había de él apartado.
21 Mas los Filisteos echaron mano de él, y sacáronle los ojos, y le llevaron á Gaza; y le ataron con cadenas, para que moliese en la cárcel.
22 Y el cabello de su cabeza comenzó á crecer, después que fué rapado.
23 Entonces los príncipes de los Filisteos se juntaron para ofrecer sacrificio á Dagón su dios, y para alegrarse; y dijeron: Nuestro dios entregó en nuestras manos á Samsón nuestro enemigo.
24 Y viéndolo el pueblo, loaron á su dios, diciendo: Nuestro dios entregó en nuestras manos á nuestro enemigo, y al destruidor de nuestra tierra, el cual había muerto á muchos de nosotros.
25 Y aconteció que, yéndose alegrando el corazón de ellos, dijeron: Llamad á Samsón, para que divierta delante de nosotros. Y llamaron á Samsón de la cárcel, y hacía de juguete delante de ellos; y pusiéronlo entre las columnas.
26 Y Samsón dijo al mozo que le guiaba de la mano: Acércame, y hazme tentar las columnas sobre que se sustenta la casa, para que me apoye sobre ellas.
27 Y la casa estaba llena de hombres y mujeres: y todos los príncipes de los Filisteos estaban allí; y en el alto piso había como tres mil hombres y mujeres, que estaban mirando el escarnio de Samsón.
28 Entonces clamó Samsón á Jehová, y dijo: Señor Jehová, acuérdate ahora de mí, y esfuérzame, te ruego, solamente esta vez, oh Dios, para que de una vez tome venganza de los Filisteos, por mis dos ojos.
29 Asió luego Samsón las dos columnas del medio sobre las cuales se sustentaba la casa, y estribó en ellas, la una con la mano derecha, y la otra con la izquierda;
30 Y dijo Samsón: Muera yo con los Filisteos. Y estribando con esfuerzo, cayó la casa sobre los príncipes, y sobre todo el pueblo que estaba en ella. Y fueron muchos más los que de ellos mató muriendo, que los que había muerto en su vida.
31 Y descendieron sus hermanos y toda la casa de su padre, y tomáronle, y lleváronle, y le sepultaron entre Sora y Esthaol, en el sepulcro de su padre Manoa. Y él juzgó á Israel veinte años.

16 Samson went to (A)Gaza, and there he saw a prostitute, and he went in to her. 2 The Gazites were told, “Samson has come here.” And they (B)surrounded the place and set an ambush for him all night at the gate of the city. They kept quiet all night, saying, “Let us wait till the light of the morning; then we will kill him.” 3 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts, and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron.
4 After this he loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. 5 And (C)the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, (D)“Seduce him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to (E)humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver.” 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could (F)subdue you.”
7 Samson said to her, “If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, (G)then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she bound him with them. 9 Now she had men lying in ambush in an inner chamber. And she said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he snapped the bowstrings, as a thread of flax snaps when it touches the fire. So the secret of his strength was not known.
10 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Behold, you have mocked me and told me lies. Please tell me how you might be bound.” 11 And he said to her, “If they bind me with (H)new ropes that have not been used, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 12 So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And the men lying in ambush were in an inner chamber. But he snapped the ropes off his arms like a thread.
13 Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.” 14 So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web.[a] And she made them tight with the pin and said to him, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” But he awoke from his sleep and pulled away the pin, the loom, and the web.
15 And she said to him, (I)“How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me where your great strength lies.” 16 And (J)when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death. 17 And he told her all his heart, and said to her, (K)“A razor has never come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If my head is shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak and be like any other man.”
18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought (L)the money in their hands. 19 She made him sleep on her knees. And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began (M)to torment him, and his strength left him. 20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that (N)the Lord had left him. 21 And the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles. (O)And he ground at the mill in the prison. 22 But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
The Death of Samson
23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to (P)Dagon their god and to rejoice, and they said, “Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand.” 24 And when the people saw him, (Q)they praised their god. For they said, “Our god has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has killed many of us.”[b] 25 And (R)when their hearts were merry, they said, “Call Samson, that he may entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 And Samson said to the young man who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the house was full of men and women. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and (S)on the roof there were about 3,000 men and women, who looked on while Samson entertained.
28 Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, (T)please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and he leaned his weight against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he bowed with all his strength, and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he had killed during his life. 31 Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him (U)between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years.
