Muerte de Jefté
12 Los hombres de Efraín se reunieron y cruzaron el Jordán hacia el norte[a], y dijeron a Jefté: «¿Por qué cruzaste a pelear contra los amonitas sin llamarnos para que fuéramos contigo(A)? Quemaremos tu casa sobre ti». 2 Y Jefté les respondió: «Yo y mi pueblo estábamos en gran lucha con los amonitas, y cuando los llamé a ustedes, no me libraron de sus manos. 3 Viendo, pues, que no me iban a librar, arriesgué mi vida[b](B) y crucé contra los amonitas, y el Señor los entregó en mi mano. ¿Por qué, pues, han subido hoy a pelear contra mí?».
4 Entonces Jefté reunió a todos los hombres de Galaad y peleó contra Efraín. Los hombres de Galaad derrotaron[c] a Efraín, porque estos decían: «Son fugitivos de Efraín, ustedes los galaaditas, en medio de Efraín y en medio de Manasés».
5 Y se apoderaron los galaaditas de los vados del Jordán(C) al lado opuesto de Efraín. Cuando alguno de los fugitivos de Efraín decía: «Déjenme cruzar», los hombres de Galaad le decían: «¿Eres efrateo?». Si él respondía: «No», 6 entonces, le decían: «Di, pues, la palabra Shibolet». Pero él decía: «Sibolet», porque no podía pronunciarla correctamente[d]. Entonces le echaban mano y lo mataban junto a los vados del Jordán. Y cayeron en aquella ocasión 42,000 de los de Efraín. 7 Jefté juzgó a Israel seis años. Y murió Jefté el galaadita, y fue sepultado en una de las ciudades de Galaad.

8 Después de Jefté[e] juzgó a Israel Ibzán de Belén. 9 Y tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas, a estas las casó[f] fuera de la familia, y trajo de afuera treinta hijas para sus hijos. Él juzgó a Israel siete años. 10 Murió Ibzán, y fue sepultado en Belén.
11 Después de Ibzán, juzgó a Israel Elón el zabulonita; quien juzgó a Israel diez años. 12 Murió Elón el zabulonita, y fue sepultado en Ajalón, en la tierra de Zabulón.
13 Entonces Abdón, hijo de Hilel el piratonita, juzgó a Israel después de Elón[g]. 14 Tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos que cabalgaban en setenta asnos. Él juzgó a Israel ocho años. 15 Y murió Abdón, hijo de Hilel el piratonita, y fue sepultado en Piratón, en la tierra de Efraín, en la región montañosa de los amalecitas.

12 Toen werden de Efraïmieten onder de wapenen geroepen. Ze trokken naar Zafon en stuurden Jefta de volgende boodschap: ‘Waarom hebt u ons niet geroepen toen u de Ammonieten aanviel? Uit wraak zullen wij uw huis, terwijl u daar zelf bent, platbranden!’ 2 ‘Ik heb u wel laten roepen, maar u weigerde te komen,’ antwoordde Jefta. ‘U kwam niet opdagen toen wij dit ernstige conflict met de Ammonieten hadden. 3 Daarom heb ik mijn leven op het spel gezet en ben zonder u ten strijde getrokken. Maar de Here heeft mij geholpen de vijand te verslaan. Waarom zou u ons dan nu aanvallen?’ 4 Toen Efraïm de mannen van Gilead uitschold voor weggelopen Efraïmieten (Gilead ligt namelijk tussen Efraïm en Manasse), kwam Jefta in actie. Hij riep alle mannen van Gilead op voor de strijd en viel het leger van Efraïm aan. Efraïm werd verslagen. 5 Jefta bezette alle doorwaadbare plaatsen van de Jordaan op de weg naar Efraïm en telkens wanneer een vluchteling van Efraïm de rivier wilde oversteken, hielden de soldaten van Gilead hem aan. ‘Hoort u bij de stam van Efraïm?’ vroegen zij dan. Als de man met ‘nee’ antwoordde, zeiden ze: 6 ‘Zeg eens “sjibboleth.” ’ Maar als hij de ‘sj’ niet kon uitspreken en ‘sibboleth’ zei, werd hij gedood. Op die manier stierven tweeënveertigduizend mannen van de stam Efraïm.
7 De Gileadiet Jefta leidde Israël zes jaar. Hij werd begraven in een van de steden van Gilead.
8-10 De volgende richter heette Ebzan. Deze man, die in Bethlehem woonde, had dertig zonen en dertig dochters. Hij huwelijkte zijn dochters uit aan mannen buiten zijn familie en haalde elders dertig meisjes om met zijn zonen te laten trouwen. Nadat hij Israël zeven jaar had geleid, stierf hij en werd in Bethlehem begraven.
11,12 Na hem werd Elon uit het gebied Zebulon richter. Hij was tien jaar leider van Israël en werd begraven in Ajalon in Zebulon.
13 Vervolgens werd Abdon, de zoon van Hillel, uit Pirathon richter. 14 Hij had veertig zonen en dertig kleinzonen, die allemaal op een eigen ezelshengst reden. Acht jaar leidde hij Israël. 15 Nadat Abdon was overleden, werd hij begraven in Pirathon, in het gebied Efraïm, in de bergen van de Amalekieten.

12 Los hombres de Efraín se alistaron, cruzaron el río hacia Zafón y dijeron a Jefté:
—¿Por qué fuiste a luchar contra los amonitas sin llamarnos para ir contigo? ¡Ahora prenderemos fuego a tu casa, contigo adentro!
2 Jefté respondió:
—Mi pueblo y yo estábamos librando una gran contienda con los amonitas, aunque yo los llamé, ustedes no me libraron de su poder. 3 Cuando vi que ustedes no me ayudarían, arriesgué mi vida, marché contra los amonitas y el Señor los entregó en mis manos. ¿Por qué, pues, han subido hoy a luchar contra mí?
4 Entonces Jefté reunió a todos los hombres de Galaad y lucharon contra los de la tribu de Efraín. Los de Galaad derrotaron a los de Efraín porque estos les habían dicho: «Ustedes los galaaditas son renegados de Efraín y Manasés». 5 Los galaaditas ocuparon los cruces del Jordán que conducen a Efraín, y cada vez que algún sobreviviente de Efraín decía: «Déjenme cruzar», los hombres de Galaad preguntaban: «¿Eres de la tribu de Efraín?». Si él contestaba: «No», 6 ellos decían: «Muy bien, di “Shibolet”». Si decía: «Sibolet», porque no podía pronunciar la palabra correctamente, lo agarraban y allí mismo, en el cruce del Jordán, lo degollaban. En aquella ocasión murieron cuarenta y dos mil hombres de la tribu de Efraín.

8 Después de Jefté, lideró a Israel Ibsán de Belén. 9 Tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas. A sus hijas las dio en matrimonio a gente que no pertenecía a su clan, y para sus hijos trajo como esposas a treinta muchachas que no eran de su tribu. Ibsán lideró a Israel por siete años. 10 Cuando murió, fue sepultado en Belén.
11 Después de Ibsán lideró a Israel Elón, de la tribu de Zabulón, durante diez años. 12 Cuando murió Elón el zabulonita, fue sepultado en Ayalón, en el territorio de Zabulón.
13 Después de Elón lideró a Israel Abdón, hijo de Hilel, de Piratón. 14 Tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, cada uno de los cuales montaba su propio asno. Jephthah and Ephraim
12 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.(A) They said to Jephthah,(B) “Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?(C) We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”
2 Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3 When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands(D) and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory(E) over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”
4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead(F) and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.(G)” 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan(H) leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” 6 they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7 Jephthah led[a] Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.

8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem(I) led Israel. 9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon(J) in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon,(K) led Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons,(L) who rode on seventy donkeys.(M) He led Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.(N)

12 And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.
2 And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
3 And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the Lord delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
5 And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;
6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
8 And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
9 And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
10 Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
12 And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.
13 And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.
14 And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.
15 And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.
