Jefté y Efraín
12 Los hombres de Efraín se alistaron, y cruzaron el río hacia Zafón y le dijeron a Jefté:
―¿Por qué fuiste a luchar contra los amonitas sin llamarnos para ir contigo? ¡Ahora prenderemos fuego a tu casa, contigo adentro!
2 Jefté respondió:
―Mi pueblo y yo estábamos librando una gran contienda con los amonitas y, aunque yo os llamé, vosotros no me librasteis de su poder. 3 Cuando vi que vosotros no me ayudaríais, arriesgué mi vida, marché contra los amonitas, y el Señor los entregó en mis manos. ¿Por qué, pues, habéis subido hoy a luchar contra mí?
4 Entonces Jefté reunió a todos los hombres de Galaad y lucharon contra los de la tribu de Efraín. Los de Galaad derrotaron a los de Efraín porque estos les habían dicho: «Vosotros los galaaditas sois renegados de Efraín y Manasés». 5 Los galaaditas ocuparon los vados del Jordán que conducen a Efraín, y cada vez que algún sobreviviente de Efraín decía: «Dejadme cruzar», los hombres de Galaad le preguntaban: «¿Eres de la tribu de Efraín?» Si él contestaba: «No», 6 ellos decían: «Muy bien, di “Shibolet”». Si decía: «Sibolet», porque no podía pronunciar la palabra correctamente, lo agarraban y allí mismo, en los vados del Jordán, lo degollaban. En aquella ocasión murieron cuarenta y dos mil hombres de la tribu de Efraín.
7 Jefté gobernó a Israel durante seis años. Cuando murió Jefté el galaadita, fue sepultado en su pueblo[a] de Galaad.
Ibsán, Elón y Abdón
8 Después de Jefté, gobernó a Israel Ibsán de Belén. 9 Tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas. A sus hijas las dio en matrimonio a gente que no pertenecía a su clan, y para sus hijos trajo como esposas a treinta muchachas que no eran de su tribu. Ibsán gobernó a Israel durante siete años. 10 Cuando murió, fue sepultado en Belén.
11 Después de Ibsán gobernó a Israel Elón, de la tribu de Zabulón, durante diez años. 12 Cuando murió Elón el zabulonita, fue sepultado en Ayalón, en el territorio de Zabulón.
13 Después de Elón gobernó a Israel Abdón hijo de Hilel, de Piratón. 14 Tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, cada uno de los cuales montaba su propio asno. Gobernó a Israel durante ocho años. 15 Cuando murió Abdón hijo de Hilel, fue sepultado en Piratón, que está en el territorio de Efraín, en la región montañosa de los amalecitas.

12 Los hombres de la tribu de Efraín se reunieron y cruzaron el Jordán en dirección a Safón, y le dijeron a Jefté:
—¿Por qué te lanzaste a atacar a los amonitas, sin avisarnos para que fuéramos contigo? ¡Ahora vamos a quemar tu casa contigo dentro!
2 Jefté les contestó:
—Mi gente y yo tuvimos un pleito con los amonitas, y yo los llamé a ustedes, pero ustedes no vinieron a defendernos. 3 Como vi que ustedes no venían en nuestra ayuda, arriesgué mi propia vida y ataqué a los amonitas, y el Señor me dio la victoria. ¿Por qué vienen ustedes ahora a pelear conmigo?
4 Entonces Jefté reunió a todos los hombres de Galaad, y peleó con los de Efraín y los derrotó. Los de Efraín decían que los de Galaad, que vivían entre Efraín y Manasés, eran gente que había abandonado a Efraín. 5 Los de Galaad les quitaron a los de Efraín los vados del Jordán, y cuando alguno de Efraín que llegaba huyendo les pedía paso, ellos le preguntaban si era de Efraín. Si aquél respondía que no, 6 le pedían que dijera «Shibolet», y si decía «Sibolet», porque no podía pronunciarlo de otro modo, lo agarraban y lo mataban allí mismo, junto a los vados del Jordán. En aquella ocasión los muertos de Efraín fueron cuarenta y dos mil hombres.
7 Jefté fue caudillo de los israelitas durante seis años. Cuando murió, lo enterraron en Galaad, su ciudad natal.
8 Después de Jefté, fue caudillo de los israelitas Ibsán, de Belén, 9 que tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas, y a todos los casó con gente de fuera. Ibsán fue caudillo de Israel durante siete años, 10 y cuando murió lo enterraron en Belén.
11 Después de él, Elón, de la tribu de Zabulón, fue caudillo de los israelitas durante diez años 12 y cuando murió lo enterraron en Aialón, en el territorio de su tribu.
13 Después de él, Abdón, el hijo de Hilel, de Piratón, fue caudillo de los israelitas 14 durante ocho años. Abdón tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, cada uno de los cuales montaba un asno. 15 Cuando murió, lo enterraron en Piratón, que está en el territorio de Efraín, en los montes de Amalec.

12 Entonces se reunieron los varones de Efraín, y pasaron hacia el norte, y dijeron a Jefté: ¿Por qué fuiste a hacer guerra contra los hijos de Amón, y no nos llamaste para que fuéramos contigo? Nosotros quemaremos tu casa contigo. 2 Y Jefté les respondió: Yo y mi pueblo teníamos una gran contienda con los hijos de Amón, y os llamé, y no me defendisteis de su mano. 3 Viendo, pues, que no me defendíais, arriesgué mi vida, y pasé contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová me los entregó; ¿por qué, pues, habéis subido hoy contra mí para pelear conmigo? 4 Entonces reunió Jefté a todos los varones de Galaad, y peleó contra Efraín; y los de Galaad derrotaron a Efraín, porque habían dicho: Vosotros sois fugitivos de Efraín, vosotros los galaaditas, en medio de Efraín y de Manasés. 5 Y los galaaditas tomaron los vados del Jordán a los de Efraín; y aconteció que cuando decían los fugitivos de Efraín: Quiero pasar, los de Galaad les preguntaban: ¿Eres tú efrateo? Si él respondía: No, 6 entonces le decían: Ahora, pues, di Shibolet. Y él decía Sibolet; porque no podía pronunciarlo correctamente. Entonces le echaban mano, y le degollaban junto a los vados del Jordán. Y murieron entonces de los de Efraín cuarenta y dos mil. 7 Y Jefté juzgó a Israel seis años; y murió Jefté galaadita, y fue sepultado en una de las ciudades de Galaad.

8 Después de él juzgó a Israel Ibzán de Belén, 9 el cual tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas, las cuales casó fuera, y tomó de fuera treinta hijas para sus hijos; y juzgó a Israel siete años. 10 Y murió Ibzán, y fue sepultado en Belén. 11 Después de él juzgó a Israel Elón zabulonita, el cual juzgó a Israel diez años. 12 Y murió Elón zabulonita, y fue sepultado en Ajalón en la tierra de Zabulón. 13 Después de él juzgó a Israel Abdón hijo de Hilel, piratonita. 14 Este tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, que cabalgaban sobre setenta asnos; y juzgó a Israel ocho años. 15 Y murió Abdón hijo de Hilel piratonita, y fue sepultado en Piratón, en la tierra de Efraín, en el monte de Amalec.

12 The men of Ephraim mustered their troops, crossed to Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, “Why did you go out to fight the Ammonites without letting us go with you? We’re going to burn your house down on you!”
2-3 Jephthah said, “I and my people had our hands full negotiating with the Ammonites. And I did call to you for help but you ignored me. When I saw that you weren’t coming, I took my life in my hands and confronted the Ammonites myself. And God gave them to me! So why did you show up here today? Are you spoiling for a fight with me?”
4 So Jephthah got his Gilead troops together and fought Ephraim. And the men of Gilead hit them hard because they were saying, “Gileadites are nothing but half breeds and rejects from Ephraim and Manasseh.”
5-6 Gilead captured the fords of the Jordan at the crossing to Ephraim. If an Ephraimite fugitive said, “Let me cross,” the men of Gilead would ask, “Are you an Ephraimite?” and he would say, “No.” And they would say, “Say, ‘Shibboleth.’” But he would always say, “Sibboleth”—he couldn’t say it right. Then they would grab him and kill him there at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two Ephraimite divisions were killed on that occasion.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city, Mizpah of Gilead.
Ibzan
8-9 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters in marriage outside his clan and brought in thirty daughters-in-law from the outside for his sons.
10 He judged Israel seven years. Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
Elon
11-12 After him, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel. He judged Israel ten years. Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
Abdon
13-15 After him, Abdon son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkeys. He judged Israel eight years. Abdon son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim in the Amalekite hill country.

Jephthah and Ephraim
12 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.(A) They said to Jephthah,(B) “Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?(C) We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”
2 Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3 When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands(D) and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory(E) over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”
4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead(F) and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.(G)” 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan(H) leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” 6 they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7 Jephthah led[a] Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.
