Guerra contra Efraín y Galaad. Muerte de Jefté
12 Los de Efraín se juntaron, cruzaron el Jordán en dirección a Safón y dijeron a Jefté:
— ¿Por qué has ido a combatir contra los amonitas y no nos has invitado a acompañarte? Vamos a prender fuego a tu casa contigo dentro.
2 Jefté les respondió:
— Cuando yo y los míos tuvimos un gran conflicto con los amonitas, os pedí ayuda y no me la disteis. 3 Como vi que nadie venía a ayudarme, arriesgué mi vida, combatí contra los amonitas y el Señor los entregó en mis manos. ¿Por qué, pues, venís hoy contra mí para hacerme la guerra?
4 Jefté reunió a todos los hombres de Galaad y atacó a Efraín; los de Galaad derrotaron a los de Efraín, y eso que estos solían decir: “Vosotros los galaaditas no sois más que fugitivos de Efraín, unas veces en medio de Efraín, otras en medio de Manasés”.
5 Galaad cortó a Efraín los vados del Jordán. Cuando los fugitivos de Efraín decían: “Dejadme pasar”, los hombres de Galaad les preguntaban: “¿Eres de Efraín?”. Si respondía: “No”, 6 le añadían: “Pues di Shibólet”. Pero si no podía pronunciarlo correctamente y decía: “Sibólet”, entonces le echaban mano y lo degollaban junto a los vados del Jordán. Perecieron en aquella ocasión cuarenta y dos mil hombres de Efraín.
7 Jefté fue juez en Israel durante seis años. Cuando Jefté, el galaadita, murió, fue sepultado en su ciudad de Galaad.
Ibsán
8 Después de Jefté fue juez en Israel Ibsán de Belén. 9 Tenía treinta hijos y treinta hijas. A estas las casó fuera y para sus hijos trajo treinta mujeres de fuera. Fue juez en Israel durante siete años. 10 Murió Ibsán y fue sepultado en Belén.
Elón
11 Después de Ibsán fue juez en Israel Elón, de Zabulón. Juzgó a Israel durante diez años. 12 Murió Elón de Zabulón y fue sepultado en Ayalón, en tierra de Zabulón.
Abdón
13 Después de Elón fue juez en Israel Abdón, hijo de Hilel, de Piratón. 14 Tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, que montaban setenta pollinos. Juzgó a Israel durante ocho años. 15 Murió Abdón, hijo de Hilel, de Piratón, y fue sepultado en Piratón, en tierra de Efraín, en el monte de Amalec.

Jephthah and Ephraim
12 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.(A) They said to Jephthah,(B) “Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you?(C) We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”
2 Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3 When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands(D) and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory(E) over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?”
4 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead(F) and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.(G)” 5 The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan(H) leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” 6 they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.
7 Jephthah led[a] Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.
Ibzan, Elon and Abdon
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem(I) led Israel. 9 He had thirty sons and thirty daughters. He gave his daughters away in marriage to those outside his clan, and for his sons he brought in thirty young women as wives from outside his clan. Ibzan led Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.
11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite led Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon died and was buried in Aijalon(J) in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him, Abdon son of Hillel, from Pirathon,(K) led Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons,(L) who rode on seventy donkeys.(M) He led Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.(N)

12 (A)The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.” 2 And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand. 3 And when I saw that you would not save me, (B)I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” 4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, (C)“You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” 5 And the Gileadites captured (D)the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” 6 they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at (E)the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell.
7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.[a]

8 After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 9 He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.
11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. 14 He had forty (F)sons and thirty grandsons, who (G)rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

12 Then (A)the men of Ephraim [a]gathered together, crossed over toward Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you with fire!”
2 And Jephthah said to them, “My people and I were in a great struggle with the people of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands. 3 So when I saw that you would not deliver me, I (B)took my life in my hands and crossed over against the people of Ammon; and the Lord delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” 4 Now Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, “You Gileadites (C)are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites and among the Manassites.” 5 The Gileadites seized the (D)fords of the Jordan before the Ephraimites arrived. And when any Ephraimite who escaped said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead would say to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,” 6 then they would say to him, “Then say, (E)‘Shibboleth’!”[b] And he would say, “Sibboleth,” for he could not [c]pronounce it right. Then they would take him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. There fell at that time forty-two thousand Ephraimites.
