11 Existía entonces Jefté, galaadita, hombre valiente, hijo de una ramera, a la cual Galaad había engendrado un hijo.
2 Y la mujer de Galaad también le había dado a luz hijos; los cuales cuando fueron grandes, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de una mujer extraña.
3 Huyendo, pues, Jefté a causa de sus hermanos, habitó en tierra de Tob; y se juntaron con él hombres vacíos, los cuales salían con él.
4 ¶ Y aconteció que después de algunos días los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.
5 Y como los hijos de Amón tenían guerra contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron para traer a Jefté de tierra de Tob;
6 y dijeron a Jefté: Ven, y serás nuestro capitán, para que peleemos con los hijos de Amón.
7 Y Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me habéis vosotros aborrecido, y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en aflicción?
8 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros, y pelees contra los hijos de Amón, y nos seas cabeza de todos los que moramos en Galaad.
9 Jefté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y el SEÑOR los entregare delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestra cabeza?
10 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: que el SEÑOR oiga entre nosotros, si no hiciéremos como tú dices.
11 Entonces Jefté vino con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió por su cabeza y príncipe; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del SEÑOR en Mizpa.
12 ¶ Y envió Jefté embajadores al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: ¿Qué tienes tú conmigo que has venido a mí para hacer guerra en mi tierra?
13 Y el rey de los amonitas respondió a los embajadores de Jefté: Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán; por tanto, devuélvela ahora en paz.
14 Y Jefté volvió a enviar otros embajadores al rey de los amonitas,
15 diciéndole: Jefté ha dicho así: Israel no tomó tierra de Moab, ni tierra de los hijos de Amón;
16 mas subiendo Israel de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el mar Bermejo, y llegó a Cades.
17 Entonces Israel envió embajadores al rey de Edom, diciendo: Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra. Mas el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también al rey de Moab; el cual tampoco quiso; se quedó por tanto Israel en Cades.
18 Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y viniendo por donde nace el sol a la tierra de Moab, asentó su campamento al otro lado de Arnón, y no entraron por el término de Moab; porque Arnón término es de Moab.
19 Y envió Israel embajadores a Sehón rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.
20 Mas Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su término; antes juntando Sehón todo su pueblo, puso campamento en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.
21 Pero el SEÑOR Dios de Israel entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en mano de Israel, y los venció; y poseyó Israel toda la tierra del amorreo que habitaba en aquella tierra.
22 Poseyeron también todo el término del amorreo desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.
23 Así que el SEÑOR el Dios de Israel echó a los amorreos delante de su pueblo Israel; ¿y lo has de poseer tú?
24 Si Quemos tu dios te echara alguno, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así, poseeremos nosotros a todo aquel que echó el SEÑOR nuestro Dios de delante de nosotros.
25 ¿Eres tú ahora en algo mejor que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Por ventura tuvo él contención contra Israel? ¿Por ventura hizo guerra contra ellos?
26 Además, Israel ha estado habitando por trescientos años en Hesbón y sus aldeas, en Aroer y sus aldeas, y todas las ciudades que están a los términos de Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recobrado en ese tiempo?
27 Así que, yo nada he pecado contra ti, mas tú haces mal conmigo haciéndome guerra; el SEÑOR, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.
28 Mas el rey de los hijos de Amón no oyó las razones de Jefté que le envió.
29 ¶ Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR fue sobre Jefté; y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y de allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.
30 Y Jefté hizo voto al SEÑOR, diciendo: Si entregares a los amonitas en mis manos,
31 cualquiera que me saliere a recibir de las puertas de mi casa, cuando volviere de los amonitas en paz, será del SEÑOR, y le ofreceré en holocausto.
32 Pasó pues Jefté a los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y el SEÑOR los entregó en su mano.
33 Y los hirió de grandísimo estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades; y hasta la vega de las viñas. Así fueron dominados los amonitas delante de los hijos de Israel.
34 Y volviendo Jefté a Mizpa a su casa, he aquí que su hija le salió a recibir con adufes y danzas, y era la sola, la única suya; no tenía fuera de ella otro hijo ni hija.
35 Y cuando él la vio, rompió sus vestidos diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido mucho, y tú eres de los que me afligen; porque yo he abierto mi boca al SEÑOR, y no podré retractarme.
36 Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si has abierto tu boca al SEÑOR, haz de mí como salió de tu boca, pues que el SEÑOR te ha hecho venganza de tus enemigos los hijos de Amón.
37 Y volvió a decir a su padre: Concédeme esto: déjame por dos meses que vaya y descienda por los montes, y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.
38 El entonces dijo: Ve. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes.
39 Pasados los dos meses volvió a su padre, e hizo de ella conforme al voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón.
40 De aquí fue la costumbre en Israel que de año en año iban las doncellas de Israel a endechar a la hija de Jefté, galaadita, cuatro días en el año.

11 Jefté el galaadita era un guerrero valiente, hijo de Galaad y de una prostituta. 2 Galaad también tuvo hijos con su esposa, quienes cuando crecieron echaron a Jefté. «No tendrás parte en la herencia de nuestra familia —dijeron—, porque eres hijo de otra mujer». 3 Entonces Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y se fue a vivir en la región de Tob, donde se le juntaron unos hombres sin escrúpulos, que salían con él a cometer fechorías.
4 Después de algún tiempo, cuando los amonitas hicieron la guerra contra Israel, 5 los jefes de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob.
6 —Ven —le dijeron—, sé nuestro comandante, para que podamos luchar contra los amonitas.
7 Jefté les contestó:
—¿No eran ustedes los que me odiaban y me echaron de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué vienen a verme ahora cuando están en apuros?
8 Los jefes de Galaad dijeron:
—Por eso ahora venimos a verte. Ven con nosotros a luchar contra los amonitas y serás el líder de todos los que vivimos en Galaad.
9 Jefté respondió:
—Si me llevan con ustedes para luchar contra los amonitas y el Señor me los entrega, entonces de veras seré el líder de ustedes.
10 Los jefes de Galaad le aseguraron:
—El Señor es nuestro testigo: haremos lo que tú digas.
11 Jefté fue con los jefes de Galaad; entonces el pueblo lo puso como su líder y comandante. Y reiteró en Mizpa todas sus palabras en presencia del Señor.
12 Luego Jefté envió unos mensajeros al rey de los amonitas para que le preguntaran:
—¿Qué tienes contra mí que has venido a hacerle la guerra a mi país?
13 El rey de los amonitas respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté:
—Cuando Israel salió de Egipto, se apoderó de mi tierra desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, incluso hasta el Jordán. Ahora devuélvemela por las buenas.
14 Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey amonita, 15 diciéndole:
«Así dice Jefté: “Israel no se apoderó de la tierra de los moabitas ni de los amonitas. 16 Cuando los israelitas salieron de Egipto, caminaron por el desierto hasta el mar Rojo[a] y siguieron hasta Cades. 17 Entonces enviaron mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciéndole: ‘Danos permiso para pasar por tu país’. Pero el rey de Edom no les hizo caso. Enviaron el mismo mensaje al rey de Moab, pero él tampoco aceptó. Así que Israel se quedó a vivir en Cades.
18 »”Después anduvieron por el desierto y bordeando los territorios de Edom y Moab, entraron en territorio moabita por la parte oriental y acamparon al otro lado del río Arnón. No entraron en el territorio moabita, pues el Arnón era la frontera.
19 »”Entonces Israel mandó mensajeros a Sijón, rey de los amorreos, que gobernaba en Hesbón, y le dijo: ‘Permítenos pasar por tu país hasta nuestro territorio’. 20 Pero Sijón desconfió de Israel[b] en cuanto a dejarlo pasar por su territorio, por lo que reunió a todo su ejército y acampó en Yahaza y luchó contra Israel.
21 »”El Señor, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sijón y a todo su ejército en manos de Israel y los derrotó. Así tomó Israel posesión de toda la tierra de los amorreos que vivían en aquel país, 22 ocupándolo todo, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.
23 »”El Señor, Dios de Israel, les quitó esta tierra a los amorreos para dársela a su pueblo Israel, ¿y tú nos la vas a quitar? 24 ¿Acaso no consideras tuyo lo que tu dios Quemós te da? Pues también nosotros consideramos nuestro lo que el Señor nuestro Dios nos ha dado. 25 ¿Acaso te crees mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Acaso alguna vez entró él en litigio con Israel o luchó contra ellos? 26 Hace ya trescientos años que Israel ocupó a Hesbón y Aroer, con sus poblados y todas las ciudades en la ribera del Arnón. ¿Por qué no las recuperaron durante ese tiempo? 27 Yo no te he hecho ningún mal. Tú, en cambio, obras mal conmigo al librar una guerra contra mí. Que el Señor, el gran Juez, dicte hoy su sentencia en esta contienda entre israelitas y amonitas”».
28 Sin embargo, el rey de los amonitas no prestó atención al mensaje que le envió Jefté.
29 Entonces Jefté, tomado por el Espíritu del Señor, recorrió Galaad y Manasés, pasó por Mizpa de Galaad y desde allí avanzó contra los amonitas. 30 Y Jefté hizo una promesa solemne al Señor: «Si verdaderamente entregas a los amonitas en mis manos, 31 quien salga primero de la puerta de mi casa a recibirme, cuando yo vuelva de haber vencido a los amonitas, será del Señor y lo ofreceré en holocausto».
32 Jefté cruzó el río para luchar contra los amonitas y el Señor los entregó en sus manos. 33 Derrotó veinte ciudades, desde Aroer hasta las inmediaciones de Minit, hasta Abel Queramín. La derrota fue muy grande; así los amonitas quedaron sometidos a los israelitas.
34 Cuando Jefté volvió a su hogar en Mizpa, salió a recibirlo su hija, bailando al son de los panderos. Ella era hija única, pues Jefté no tenía otros hijos. 35 Cuando Jefté la vio, se rasgó las vestiduras y exclamó:
—¡Ay, hija mía, me has destrozado por completo! ¡Eres la causa de mi desgracia! Juré algo al Señor y no puedo retractarme.
36 —Padre mío —respondió ella—, le has dado tu palabra al Señor. Haz conmigo conforme a tu juramento, ya que el Señor te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los amonitas. 37 Pero concédeme esta sola petición —añadió—. Ya que nunca me casaré, dame un plazo de dos meses para retirarme a las montañas y llorar allí con mis amigas.
38 —Está bien, puedes ir —respondió él.
Y le permitió irse por dos meses. Ella y sus amigas se fueron a las montañas y lloró porque nunca se casaría. 39 Cumplidos los dos meses volvió a su padre y él hizo con ella conforme a su promesa. Ella era virgen.
De allí se originó la costumbre israelita 40 de que todos los años, durante cuatro días, las muchachas de Israel recordaran a la hija de Jefté de Galaad.

11 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.
2 And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.
4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.
5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Lord deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lord be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.
12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:
15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.
18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.
19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21 And the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
23 So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the Lord our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.
28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands.
33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

11 Jephthah(A) the Gileadite was a mighty warrior.(B) His father was Gilead;(C) his mother was a prostitute.(D) 2 Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,(E) where a gang of scoundrels(F) gathered around him and followed him.
4 Some time later, when the Ammonites(G) were fighting against Israel, 5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”
7 Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house?(H) Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”
8 The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head(I) over all of us who live in Gilead.”
9 Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”
10 The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness;(J) we will certainly do as you say.” 11 So Jephthah went with the elders(K) of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated(L) all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.(M)
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: “What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?”
13 The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon(N) to the Jabbok,(O) all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.”
14 Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, 15 saying:
“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab(P) or the land of the Ammonites.(Q) 16 But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea[a](R) and on to Kadesh.(S) 17 Then Israel sent messengers(T) to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Give us permission to go through your country,’(U) but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab,(V) and he refused.(W) So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18 “Next they traveled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom(X) and Moab, passed along the eastern side(Y) of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon.(Z) They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
19 “Then Israel sent messengers(AA) to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(AB) and said to him, ‘Let us pass through your country to our own place.’(AC) 20 Sihon, however, did not trust Israel[b] to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.(AD)
21 “Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, 22 capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.(AE)
23 “Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24 Will you not take what your god Chemosh(AF) gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us,(AG) we will possess. 25 Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor,(AH) king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?(AI) 26 For three hundred years Israel occupied(AJ) Heshbon, Aroer,(AK) the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? 27 I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge,(AL) decide(AM) the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.(AN)”
28 The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29 Then the Spirit(AO) of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah(AP) of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.(AQ) 30 And Jephthah made a vow(AR) to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31 whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph(AS) from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.(AT)”
32 Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33 He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith,(AU) as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing(AV) to the sound of timbrels!(AW) She was an only child.(AX) Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes(AY) and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.(AZ)”
36 “My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised,(BA) now that the Lord has avenged you(BB) of your enemies,(BC) the Ammonites. 37 But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”
38 “You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39 After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40 that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
