I.— COMPLEMENTOS AL LIBRO DE JOSUÉ (1,1—2,5)
Establecimiento de Judá, Simeón, Caleb y los quenitas
1 Muerto Josué, los israelitas hicieron esta consulta al Señor:
— ¿Quién de nosotros será el primero en combatir contra los cananeos?
2 El Señor respondió:
— Será Judá en cuyas manos he puesto el país. 3 Judá dijo a su hermano Simeón:
— Ven conmigo al territorio que me ha tocado; atacaremos a los cananeos y después yo también iré contigo a tu territorio.
Y Simeón marchó con él. 4 Subió Judá, y el Señor hizo que derrotara a los cananeos y a los fereceos matando en Bécec a diez mil hombres. 5 Encontraron en Bécec a Adoni Bécec, lo atacaron y derrotaron a los cananeos y a los fereceos. 6 Adoni Bécec escapó, pero lo persiguieron, lo capturaron y le cortaron los pulgares de manos y pies. 7 Y Adoni Bécec dijo:
— Setenta reyes, con los pulgares de manos y pies cortados, recogían migajas bajo mi mesa. Dios me ha pagado según mi conducta.
Lo llevaron a Jerusalén y allí murió.
8 Los de la tribu de Judá atacaron a Jerusalén, la conquistaron, la pasaron a cuchillo y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. 9 Después, los de la tribu de Judá bajaron a atacar a los cananeos que ocupaban la Montaña, el Négueb y la Sefela. 10 Se dirigió luego Judá contra los cananeos que habitaban en Hebrón (que antes se llamaba Quiriat Arbá) y derrotó a Sesay, a Ajimán y a Talmay. 11 A continuación marchó contra los habitantes de Debir (que antes se llamaba Quiriat Séfer). 12 Y Caleb dijo:
— Al que ataque a Quiriat Séfer y la conquiste, le daré por esposa a mi hija Axá.
13 La conquistó Otoniel, hijo de Quenaz, el hermano pequeño de Caleb. Y Caleb le dio por esposa a su hija Axá. 14 Cuando iba a casa de su marido, Otoniel la instigó para que pidiera a su padre un campo. Se apeó Axá del asno y Caleb le preguntó:
— ¿Qué quieres?
15 Ella contestó:
— Hazme un regalo. Ya que me has dado tierras en el Négueb, dame también manantiales de agua.
Y Caleb le dio los manantiales de arriba y los de abajo.
16 Los hijos del quenita Jobab, suegro de Moisés, subieron con los de Judá desde la ciudad de las Palmeras al desierto de Arad, y fueron a establecerse entre los amalecitas.
17 Judá y su hermano Simeón derrotaron a los cananeos que habitaban en Sefat y consagraron la ciudad al exterminio. Por eso la ciudad se llamó Jormá.
18 Judá no pudo apoderarse de Gaza y su comarca, ni de Ascalón y su comarca, ni de Ecrón y su comarca. 19 El Señor asistió a Judá, que conquistó la región montañosa; pero no pudo expulsar a los que habitaban la llanura porque tenían carros de hierro.
20 A Caleb le fue asignada Hebrón, según las órdenes de Moisés; y él expulsó de allí a los tres hijos de Anac. 21 Pero la tribu de Benjamín no consiguió expulsar a los jebuseos que habitaban en Jerusalén; por eso los jebuseos siguen habitando en Jerusalén con los benjaminitas hasta el día de hoy.
22 También los de la casa de José atacaron Betel; y el Señor los asistió. 23 Los de la casa de José hicieron un reconocimiento previo por los alrededores de Betel (que antes se llamaba Luz). 24 Los espías vieron a un hombre que salía de la ciudad y le dijeron:
— Indícanos por dónde se entra en la ciudad y tendremos compasión de ti.
25 Él les indicó la entrada de la ciudad. Los israelitas pasaron a cuchillo a sus habitantes, pero dejaron libre a aquel hombre con toda su familia. 26 El hombre marchó al país de los hititas y edificó allí una ciudad a la que llamó Luz. Es el nombre que tiene hasta la fecha.
Las tribus septentrionales
27 Manasés no pudo apoderarse de Bet Seán con sus aldeas, ni de Tanac con sus aldeas. No pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Dor con sus aldeas, ni a los de Jibleán con sus aldeas, ni a los de Meguido con sus aldeas; así que los cananeos siguieron ocupando la región. 28 Pero cuando Israel cobró más fuerza, sometió a los cananeos a trabajos forzados, aunque no llegó a expulsarlos.
29 Tampoco Efraín pudo expulsar a los cananeos que habitaban en Guécer, con lo que los cananeos siguieron viviendo en Guécer, en medio de Efraín. 30 Y lo mismo le sucedió a Zabulón: no pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Quitrón, ni a los de Nahalol; así que los cananeos se quedaron en medio de Zabulón, aunque sometidos a trabajos forzados. 31 Tampoco Aser pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Aco, ni a los de Sidón, ni a los de Majaleb, ni a los de Aczib, ni a los de Jelbá, ni a los de Afic, ni a los de Rejob; 32 por eso los de la tribu de Aser, al no poder expulsarlos, tuvieron que convivir con los cananeos que habitaban en la región.
33 Y tampoco Neftalí pudo expulsar a los habitantes de Bet Semes, ni a los de Bet Anat, y tuvo que convivir con los cananeos que ocupaban el país; pero los habitantes de Bet Semes y de Bet Anat fueron sometidos a trabajos forzados.
34 Los amorreos rechazaron hacia la montaña a los hijos de Dan y no les permitieron bajar a la llanura. 35 Los amorreos se mantuvieron en Jar Jéres, en Ayalón y en Salbín. Pero luego la tribu de José los sojuzgó y los sometió a trabajos forzados.
36 (El territorio de los edomitas se extendía desde la cuesta de Acrabín y de Selá hacia arriba).

The Continuing Conquest of Canaan(A)
1 Now after the (B)death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel (C)asked the Lord, saying, “Who shall be first to go up for us against the (D)Canaanites to fight against them?”
2 And the Lord said, (E)“Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand.”
3 So Judah said to (F)Simeon his brother, “Come up with me to my allotted territory, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and (G)I will likewise go with you to your allotted territory.” And Simeon went with him. 4 Then Judah went up, and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they killed ten thousand men at (H)Bezek. 5 And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him; and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 Then Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes. 7 And Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; (I)as I have done, so God has repaid me.” Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8 Now (J)the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it; they struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. 9 (K)And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the mountains, in the [a]South, and in the lowland. 10 Then Judah [b]went against the Canaanites who dwelt in (L)Hebron. (Now the name of Hebron was formerly (M)Kirjath Arba.) And they killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 (N)From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir was formerly Kirjath Sepher.)
12 (O)Then Caleb said, “Whoever attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah as wife.” 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, (P)Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife. 14 (Q)Now it happened, when she came to him, that [c]she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” 15 So she said to him, (R)“Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.”
And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16 (S)Now the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up (T)from the City of Palms with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which lies in the South near (U)Arad; (V)and they went and dwelt among the people. 17 (W)And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called (X)Hormah. 18 Also Judah took (Y)Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. 19 So the Lord was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had (Z)chariots of iron. 20 (AA)And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. Then he [d]expelled from there the (AB)three sons of Anak. 21 (AC)But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 And the [e]house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, (AD)and the Lord was with them. 23 So the [f]house of Joseph (AE)sent men to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city was formerly (AF)Luz.) 24 And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city, and (AG)we will show you mercy.” 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
Incomplete Conquest of the Land
27 (AH)However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or (AI)Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of (AJ)Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites [g]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.
29 (AK)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Nor did (AL)Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and [h]were put under tribute.
31 (AM)Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. 32 So the Asherites (AN)dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33 (AO)Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; 35 and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, (AP)in Aijalon, and in [i]Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they [j]were put under tribute.
36 Now the boundary of the Amorites was (AQ)from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.

Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites(A)
1 After the death(B) of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first(C) to fight against the Canaanites?(D)”
2 The Lord answered, “Judah(E) shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.(F)”
3 The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites(G) went with them.
4 When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites(H) into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.(I) 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek(J) and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back(K) for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem,(L) and he died there.
8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem(M) also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9 After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country,(N) the Negev(O) and the western foothills. 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron(P) (formerly called Kiriath Arba(Q)) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.(R) 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir(S) (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[a] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(T)
16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law,(U) the Kenite,(V) went up from the City of Palms[b](W) with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.(X)
17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites(Y) their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed[c] the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.[d](Z) 18 Judah also took[e] Gaza,(AA) Ashkelon(AB) and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19 The Lord was with(AC) the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country,(AD) but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.(AE) 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron(AF) was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.(AG) 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out(AH) the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem;(AI) to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22 Now the tribes of Joseph(AJ) attacked Bethel,(AK) and the Lord was with them. 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),(AL) 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.(AM)” 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared(AN) the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites,(AO) where he built a city and called it Luz,(AP) which is its name to this day.
27 But Manasseh did not(AQ) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor(AR) or Ibleam(AS) or Megiddo(AT) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites(AU) were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.(AV) 29 Nor did Ephraim(AW) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,(AX) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.(AY) 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher(AZ) drive out those living in Akko or Sidon(BA) or Ahlab or Akzib(BB) or Helbah or Aphek(BC) or Rehob.(BD) 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh(BE) or Beth Anath(BF); but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites(BG) confined the Danites(BH) to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.(BI) 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,(BJ) Aijalon(BK) and Shaalbim,(BL) but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass(BM) to Sela(BN) and beyond.(BO)

Failure to Complete the Conquest
27 (AD)Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28 When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.
29 (AE)And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.
30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of (AF)Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.
31 (AG)Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32 so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

34 (AI)The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35 The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, (AJ)in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor. 36 And the border of the Amorites ran from (AK)the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
