Derrota de Adoni-bezec
1 Después [a] de la muerte de Josué, los hijos de Israel consultaron al Señor(A), diciendo: ¿Quién de nosotros subirá primero contra los cananeos(B) para pelear contra ellos? 2 Y el Señor respondió: Judá subirá; he aquí, yo he entregado el país en sus manos(C). 3 Entonces Judá dijo a su hermano Simeón: Sube conmigo al territorio que me ha tocado[b], para que peleemos contra los cananeos; yo también iré contigo al territorio que te ha tocado[c]. Y Simeón fue con él. 4 Subió Judá, y el Señor entregó en sus manos a los cananeos y a los ferezeos, y derrotaron[d](D) a diez mil hombres en Bezec. 5 Hallaron a Adoni-bezec en Bezec y pelearon contra él, y derrotaron[e] a los cananeos y a los ferezeos. 6 Huyó Adoni-bezec, pero lo persiguieron, lo prendieron y le cortaron los pulgares de las manos y de los pies. 7 Y Adoni-bezec dijo: Setenta reyes, con los pulgares de sus manos y de sus pies cortados, recogían migajas debajo de mi mesa; como yo he hecho(E), así me ha pagado Dios. Lo llevaron a Jerusalén, y allí murió.
Conquista de Jerusalén
8 Y pelearon los hijos de Judá contra Jerusalén(F) y la tomaron, la pasaron a filo de espada y prendieron fuego a la ciudad. 9 Después descendieron los hijos de Judá a pelear contra los cananeos que vivían en la región montañosa, en el Neguev[f] y en las tierras bajas[g]. 10 (G)Y Judá marchó contra los cananeos que habitaban en Hebrón (el nombre de Hebrón antes era Quiriat-arba); e hirieron a Sesai, a Ahimán y a Talmai.
Conquista de otras ciudades
11 De allí fue contra los habitantes de Debir (el nombre de Debir antes era Quiriat-séfer(H)). 12 Y Caleb dijo: Al que ataque[h] a Quiriat-séfer y la tome, yo le daré a mi hija Acsa por mujer. 13 Y Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz, hermano menor de Caleb(I), la tomó, y él le dio a su hija Acsa por mujer. 14 Y sucedió que cuando ella vino a él, este la[i] persuadió a que pidiera un campo a su padre. Ella entonces se bajó del asno, y Caleb le dijo: ¿Qué quieres?[j](J) 15 Y ella le dijo: Dame una bendición, ya que me has dado la tierra del Neguev, dame también fuentes de agua. Y Caleb le dio las fuentes de arriba y las fuentes de abajo.
16 Y los descendientes[k] del ceneo, suegro de Moisés(K), subieron de la ciudad de las palmeras(L) con los hijos de Judá, al desierto de Judá que está al sur de Arad(M); y fueron y habitaron con el pueblo. 17 Entonces Judá fue con Simeón su hermano, y derrotaron[l] a los cananeos que vivían en Sefat, y la destruyeron por completo[m]. Por eso pusieron por nombre a la ciudad, Horma[n](N). 18 Y Judá tomó a Gaza(O) con su territorio, a Ascalón con su territorio y a Ecrón con su territorio. 19 El Señor estaba con Judá, que tomó posesión de la región montañosa, pero no pudo expulsar[o] a los habitantes del valle porque estos tenían carros de hierro(P). 20 Entonces dieron Hebrón a Caleb, como Moisés había prometido[p](Q); y él expulsó[q] de allí a los tres hijos de Anac(R). 21 Pero los hijos de Benjamín no expulsaron[r] a los jebuseos que vivían en Jerusalén(S); así que los jebuseos han vivido con los hijos de Benjamín en Jerusalén hasta el día de hoy(T).
José conquista a Betel
22 De igual manera la casa de José subió contra Betel; y el Señor estaba con ellos. 23 Y la casa de José envió espías[s] a Betel (el nombre de la ciudad antes era Luz(U)). 24 Y vieron los espías a un hombre que salía de la ciudad y le dijeron: Te rogamos que nos muestres la entrada de la ciudad y te trataremos con misericordia(V). 25 Él les mostró la entrada de la ciudad; e hirieron la ciudad a filo de espada, mas dejaron ir al hombre y a toda su familia(W). 26 Y el hombre fue a la tierra de los hititas y edificó una ciudad a la que llamó Luz; y este es su nombre hasta hoy.
Lugares no conquistados
27 (X)Pero Manasés no tomó posesión de Bet-seán y sus aldeas, ni de Taanac y sus aldeas, ni de los habitantes de Dor y sus aldeas, ni de los habitantes de Ibleam y sus aldeas, ni de los habitantes de Meguido y sus aldeas; y los cananeos persistían en habitar en aquella tierra(Y). 28 Y sucedió que cuando Israel se hizo fuerte, sometieron a los cananeos a trabajos forzados, pero no los expulsaron totalmente.
29 Tampoco Efraín expulsó a los cananeos que habitaban en Gezer; y los cananeos habitaron en medio de ellos en Gezer(Z).
30 Zabulón no expulsó a los habitantes de Quitrón, ni a los habitantes de Naalal; de manera que los cananeos habitaron en medio de ellos y fueron sometidos a trabajos forzados.
31 Aser no expulsó a los habitantes de Aco, ni a los habitantes de Sidón, ni de Ahlab, ni de Aczib, ni de Helba, ni de Afec, ni de Rehob. 32 Así que los de Aser habitaron entre los cananeos, los habitantes de aquella[t] tierra, porque no los expulsaron.
33 Neftalí no expulsó a los habitantes de Bet-semes, ni a los habitantes de Bet-anat, sino que habitó entre los cananeos, los habitantes de aquella[u] tierra; y los habitantes de Bet-semes y de Bet-anat fueron sometidos a trabajos forzados.
34 Entonces los amorreos forzaron[v] a los hijos de Dan hacia la región montañosa, y no los dejaron descender al valle. 35 Y los amorreos persistieron en habitar en el monte de Heres, en Ajalón y en Saalbim; pero cuando el poder[w] de la casa de José se fortaleció[x], fueron sometidos a trabajos forzados. 36 La frontera de los amorreos iba desde la subida de Acrabim(AA), desde Sela hacia arriba.

Judá y Simeón capturan a Adoni-bezec

Judá conquista Jerusalén y Hebrón

Las tribus de Judá y Simeón capturan a Adonisédec
1 Después de la muerte de Josué, los israelitas le preguntaron a Dios:
—¿Cuál de nuestras tribus atacará primero a los cananeos?
2 Dios les respondió:
—Primero atacará la tribu de Judá, pues a ellos les voy a entregar ese territorio.
3 Entonces los de Judá les dijeron a los de Simeón: «Vengan con nosotros a pelear contra los cananeos. Primero iremos al territorio que nos ha tocado a nosotros, y después al de ustedes».
Los de Simeón aceptaron, 4-5 así que salieron juntos a pelear, y Dios los ayudó a derrotar a los cananeos y a los ferezeos. En Bézec derrotaron a diez mil ferezeos y cananeos, entre los cuales estaba el rey Adonisédec. 6 Durante la lucha Adonisédec había escapado, pero lo persiguieron y capturaron, y le cortaron los pulgares de las manos y los dedos gordos de los pies. 7 Entonces Adonisédec dijo: «Dios ha hecho conmigo lo mismo que yo hice con setenta reyes: les corté los pulgares y los dedos gordos, y andaban bajo mi mesa recogiendo las sobras». Después, Adonisédec fue llevado a Jerusalén, y allí murió.
La tribu de Judá conquista Jerusalén y Hebrón
8 Los de Judá atacaron a Jerusalén y la conquistaron. Mataron a toda la gente de esa ciudad, y luego la incendiaron. 9 Después fueron a atacar a los cananeos que vivían en las montañas, en el desierto del sur y en la llanura. 10 Atacaron también a los cananeos que vivían en Hebrón, ciudad que antes se llamaba Quiriat-arbá. Allí derrotaron a los grupos cananeos de Sesai, Ahimán y Talmai.
Otoniel conquista la ciudad de Debir
11 Luego los de Judá marcharon hacia la ciudad de Debir, que antes se llamaba Quiriat-séfer. 12 Caleb había prometido que quien conquistara Debir se casaría con su hija Acsa, 13 y fue su sobrino Otoniel quien la conquistó. Así que Caleb le dio a Otoniel su hija Acsa por esposa. Otoniel era hijo de Quenaz, el hermano menor de Caleb. 14 El día de su casamiento, Otoniel le dijo a Acsa que le pidiera un terreno a su padre. Cuando Caleb la vio bajar de su burro, le preguntó qué quería; 15 y Acsa le dijo: «Los terrenos que me has dado no tienen agua. Por favor, dame también manantiales».
Y Caleb le dio el manantial Alto y el manantial Bajo.
Conquistas de las tribus de Judá y de Benjamín
16 Los quenitas, que eran descendientes del suegro de Moisés, salieron de Jericó junto con la tribu de Judá, y se fueron al desierto que está al sur de Arad. Allí se quedaron a vivir. 17 Después los de Judá, junto con los de Simeón, derrotaron a los cananeos que vivían en Sefat. Como destruyeron por completo esa ciudad, la llamaron Hormá.[a]
18-19 Con la ayuda de Dios, la tribu de Judá se apoderó de la zona montañosa, pero no de la llanura, porque los habitantes de esa región tenían carros de hierro. No pudieron conquistar Gaza ni Ascalón ni Ecrón, ni tampoco los territorios vecinos. 20 Y tal como Moisés había prometido, la región de Hebrón le fue dada a Caleb, para que allí viviera. Por eso Caleb echó de esa región a los tres grupos de familias que descendían del gigante Anac.[b] 21 Pero los de la tribu de Benjamín no pudieron echar a los jebuseos, que vivían en Jerusalén. Por eso, hasta el día en que este relato se escribió, los jebuseos vivieron en Jerusalén, junto con los de Benjamín.
Las tribus de Efraín y Manasés conquistan Betel
22-23 Las tribus de Efraín y Manasés decidieron atacar a Betel, la ciudad que antes se llamaba Luz; así que enviaron espías a esa ciudad, y Dios los ayudó. 24 Cuando esos espías vieron a un hombre que salía de la ciudad, le dijeron: «Si nos muestras cómo entrar en la ciudad, no te haremos ningún daño».
25 Aquel hombre les enseñó cómo entrar en la ciudad, y así pudieron entrar los de Efraín y Manasés. Mataron a todos los que allí vivían, pero no al que los había ayudado ni a su familia. 26 Más tarde, ese hombre se fue al territorio de los hititas y edificó una nueva ciudad, a la cual llamó Luz; y hasta el momento en que este relato se escribe aún se llama así.
Los territorios no conquistados
27 Los de Manasés no pudieron echar a los que vivían en Bet-seán, Taanac, Dor, Ibleam y Meguido, ni tampoco a los de las aldeas vecinas. Así que los cananeos siguieron viviendo allí. 28 Después los israelitas se hicieron más poderosos y obligaron a los cananeos a trabajar para ellos, pero no los pudieron echar de su territorio.
29 Los de Efraín tampoco pudieron echar a los cananeos que vivían en Guézer, así que los cananeos siguieron allí, viviendo junto a los de Efraín.
30 Los de Zabulón tampoco pudieron echar a los cananeos que vivían en Quitrón y en Nahalal, así que éstos siguieron allí, pero obligados a trabajar para los de Zabulón.
31-32 Tampoco los de Aser pudieron echar a los cananeos que vivían en Aco, Sidón, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbá, Afec y Rehob, así que se quedaron a vivir entre los cananeos que allí vivían.
33 Tampoco los de la tribu de Neftalí pudieron echar a los cananeos que vivían en Bet-semes y Bet-anat, así que éstos siguieron allí, pero obligados a trabajar para los de Neftalí.
34 Los de la tribu de Dan tuvieron que retroceder a las montañas porque los amorreos no los dejaron bajar a la llanura. 35 Así que los amorreos se quedaron en Jeres, Aialón y Saalbim. Tiempo después, los de Efraín y de Manasés se hicieron más poderosos y obligaron a los amorreos a trabajar para ellos.
36 La frontera de los amorreos comenzaba en el paso de Acrabim, llegaba hasta Selá, y de allí seguía hacia las montañas.

Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites(A)
1 After the death(B) of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first(C) to fight against the Canaanites?(D)”
2 The Lord answered, “Judah(E) shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.(F)”
3 The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites(G) went with them.
4 When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites(H) into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.(I) 5 It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek(J) and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6 Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7 Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back(K) for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem,(L) and he died there.
8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem(M) also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9 After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country,(N) the Negev(O) and the western foothills. 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron(P) (formerly called Kiriath Arba(Q)) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.(R) 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir(S) (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[a] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(T)
16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law,(U) the Kenite,(V) went up from the City of Palms[b](W) with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.(X)
17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites(Y) their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed[c] the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.[d](Z) 18 Judah also took[e] Gaza,(AA) Ashkelon(AB) and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19 The Lord was with(AC) the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country,(AD) but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.(AE) 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron(AF) was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.(AG) 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out(AH) the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem;(AI) to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22 Now the tribes of Joseph(AJ) attacked Bethel,(AK) and the Lord was with them. 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),(AL) 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.(AM)” 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared(AN) the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites,(AO) where he built a city and called it Luz,(AP) which is its name to this day.
27 But Manasseh did not(AQ) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor(AR) or Ibleam(AS) or Megiddo(AT) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites(AU) were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.(AV) 29 Nor did Ephraim(AW) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,(AX) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.(AY) 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher(AZ) drive out those living in Akko or Sidon(BA) or Ahlab or Akzib(BB) or Helbah or Aphek(BC) or Rehob.(BD) 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh(BE) or Beth Anath(BF); but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites(BG) confined the Danites(BH) to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.(BI) 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,(BJ) Aijalon(BK) and Shaalbim,(BL) but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass(BM) to Sela(BN) and beyond.(BO)

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
4 And Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the Lord was with them.
23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.
34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
